FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

Is the Obama White House In Charge?

Today’s Washington Post ran a front page news analysis entitled Obama struggling to show he’s in control of oil spill. Sweet, huh?

A defensive President Obama sought Thursday to quell doubts about his handling of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, insisting that his administration has been “in charge” from the moment it began and bristling that critics who accuse it of being sluggish to react “don’t know the facts.”

But at times during a 63-minute news conference in the East Room of the White House, the president seemed to undercut his own argument. He enumerated a litany of fumbles and lapses: that the government lacks resources and “superior technology” to respond to the disaster; that he personally had assumed oil companies “had their act together when it came to worst-case scenarios”; that his administration “fell short” with its acceptance of BP’s inaccurate estimate of the size of the gusher; that reforms of the corruption-plagued government agency that oversees offshore drilling “weren’t happening fast enough.”

At one point, Obama said he did not know whether Elizabeth Birnbaum — the director of the Minerals Management Service he blamed for allowing the oil industry to overrule environmental and safety concerns — had resigned or been fired hours before.

Could that be possible? That the president didn’t know if the director of the Minerals Management Service, the agency responsible for overseeing offshore drilling, had been fired or had resigned? Well, over the transom we have some information that indicates that might very well be the case.

According to our sources this is what happened yesterday.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar summoned Birnbaum to his office before the Congressional hearings before Representative Jim Moran’s subcommittee to let her know that she was not to attend the hearing and that her presence at the hearing and his association with her was somewhat less than useful to either Salazar or the Administration.

According to our sources Birnbaum, who is well known for being foul-mouthed (as well as aesthetically challenged), was underwhelmed by Salazar’s point of view and replied, “**** you.”

What followed was a frank and unvarnished exchange of opinions. At some point Department of Interior security personnel arrived and escorted Birnbaum from the premises. Salazar was accompanied to the hearing by Deputy Interior Secretary David Hayes.

Word is that Salazar is aware of a position being reserved for him under the Obama bus. The BP exploration plan, their drilling permits, the National Environmental Protection Act exemptions… and the blowout…. all occurred under the current Administration. Someone has to be blamed, not even the media are blaming Bush for this, so someone in the Administration has to be the stuckee.

The story also demonstrates that apparently no one is really calling the shots in this administration. Obama has been too busy with legacy building, and nation destroying, initiatives to dirty his hands with governing. That is why a panicked Ken Salazar fired Birnbaum right before a congressional hearing. That is why no one bothered to tell Obama of this unfortunate fact.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is one helluva way for a nation to be run.

Good analysis. Thanks for your service, by the way. All 20+ years.

Doesn’t it feel like the bus is driverless? People have been run over with their own cars before.

The news of her dismissal was early enough for the president to be made aware of it, and how it happened. The informal grapevine at the WH must have better communication avenues than the guys running the place.

  • The Old Dog

then he isn’t. If he was truly in charge it would be obvious by his actions, not words. Incompetence wrapped up in arrogance does not deserve respect.

the state government equivalent of a secretary, I am here to testify that it can be very dramatic. Unfortunately, the POS didn’t have the guts, or the AG’s office was too smart, to fire me. ‘Cause if that corrupt SOB had fired me, I’d be sitting on a beach drawing 20% rather than typing on this blog.

…standing on a corner in Chicago, handing out leaflets.

Or like his extremely lengthy service in the Senate, where attendance and voting are optional.

IQ? Yes, Obama has a good one. Speaking ability? Sure, with the right teleprompter. But experience, wisdom, maturity, responsibility, devotion to duty, all are qualities rather completely lacking from our narcissistic man-child “leader.”

Ships don’t sail themselves, including ships of state. With nobody at the helm, the United States of America is in dire straits.

Just by remote. And the man holding the remote is George Soros. Almost everyday I am a little more convinced that Glenn Beck is right. The intentional collapse of the system in order to pass the controls to a Global Governance is absolutely plausible. The mounting evidence and “coincedences” are making it hard to rationalize another alternative.

should by now have all doubts removed. None of the people in this administration have ever done ANYTHING except talk. Most of them have never even been in a place in government where they had to prepare and live under the budget and evaluate the performance of employees. And, what, less than ten percent of the appointees have ANY private sector experience. A bunch of academics and bureaucrats, and not even technical specialist bureaucrats; they only thing the ‘crats ever did was go to the right cocktail parties. I just hope the Country survives!

Just ask Nancy Pelosi. Her comments from Bloombergs “Political Capital” show to be broadcast this weekend. It must be nice, living in a world where there is no moral ambiguity.

” Pelosi said failures to regulate the oil-drilling industry
at the Minerals Management Service ?are the result of the cozy
relationship between the Bush administration and the oil
    industry.?
Holdovers from the administration ?have burrowed in
there? and Obama ?removed the head? of the agency, Elizabeth
Birnbaum, ?because she hadn?t cleaned up the Bush
    administration people fast enough.?

When you have a fixed worldview, it is easier to change facts to fit the conclusion than the other way around.

Bush = Resposible for everything wrong in the world, even years after he left office.
Obama = All powerful, able to retroactively influence midlevel bureaucrats to resign.

    “Bluebird”

I’d be ecstatic to see this entire administration riding one of those Bluebird buses!
Of course if your Bluebird reference meant something else entirely
I apologize…..not for the mix up because I’d still love to see them all prison bound on one of those buses, nope I apologize because otherwise I have not one idea what you mean.

getting bigger and bigger as it gets closer and closer.

Firing HHS Sec. Sebelius because the Health Care Bill costs were underestimated. It will happen right before his majesty declares he want to be king again in 2012.

That will clear the way for a kingly electoral platform, built on a package of massive changes to his royal healthcare decree- stealing an issue from the opposition.

Once in office for second term, he will declare amnesia, with regard to electoral platforms and promises, will reign again as a primary policy for another four years.

By the way, did you see his majesty crouching down and using serfs as props in the Gulf? It is showing his kinder, gentler, in-touch, regular-guy side. Oh, and there just happened to be an MSM photographer there.

This administration reminds me of the scene in Apocalypse Now where Martin Sheen asks whose in charge and a soldier replies aren’t you.

PBR Street Gang, PBR Street Gang
    This is Almighty, over.

They’re not even in charge of their own PR, as witnessed by the last 2 days–spill press conference, and today’s statement on the Sestak affair.

On the latter, I’m reminded of The King’s Great Matter, where the Archbishop of Canterbury was played by Billy Jeff, Sestak was played by Queen Catherine, Anne Boleyn was played by Snarlin’ Arlen, and starring as Henry VIII, our master himself.

Just like the Louisiana governor and N. Orleans mayor during Katrina, DC had emergency plans, but never opened the drawer to take them out and look at them.
    N. Orleans had 5 days’ warning of Katrina when it was still east of FL, but they elected not to act.
For ten years in the late 70s into the 80s, the Army Corps of Engineers tried to offer plans to fix the levees and locks that failed during Katrina, but the Sierra Club, the World Wildlife Fund, Audubon Society. and usual suspects spent a decade in court to defeat the ACE and they did. Did they think fewer birds’ migrations or nesting grounds were less affected by Katrina than the ACE plans would’ve been?
PLAN A for the Gulf oil spill was to have fire booms ready to surround a spill and then set it on fire and burn most off before it dispersed. The US gov’t DID NOT buy the booms or prepare for this accident.
If the EPA and other idjits did not force oil producers to drill in 5000 feet or water instead of 200 off a coast., such a deep-water disaster would have been much easier and less damaging to address and fix. Now we are all stuck.

Well… maybe they could run it into the ground… O-wait I’m so foolish not to realize this before:
The O’s team, well the people around hjm who do stuf etc, would get all sorts of federal and state subsidies for it and hire lots of Union bosses/buddies into Taco stand supporting councils/advisory boards and everyone remotely connected to them will get paid wildly as the money flows into/through the Taco stand…

Of course, if you go to the O’s Taco stand to get a Taco it either won’t be open or they’ll be out of Tacos or if they have a few the Tacos that will cost $10,000 each or a “cut rate” of “$5,000″ each if you have the special Taco stand exclusive $100K donor card…

I think we should pound on Obama and his administration 24/7. Boom, Boom. Boom. But how people look—their physical appearance—is not an issue and we waste our resources when we indulge in petty finger-pointing.

I loathe, abhor, and utterly despise the Democratic Party, liberals, and leftists ,and those so-called Progressives too, but physical appearance (unless dressed inappropriately to the job, or unkempt) is of no concern to me whatsoever.
