Michele Bachmann: Accidental Kamikaze

I’ve been leaning towards Rick Perry for a few weeks with Michele Bachmann as my second choice if he implodes. My first preference didn’t change last night but my second place choice did.

Last night Michele Bachmann lost my support.

She not only lost it for consideration as a presidential nominee, she lost it period. Full stop. In my view she beclowned herself beyond redemption and the sooner she disappears from the national stage the better.

For reasons that seem to have more to do with being behind Ron Paul in the polls and trying to scab some of the Paul supporters than any policy reason she made an unhinged attack on Perry on what should be a non-issue: his never-implemented executive order making mandatory a vaccine to protect women against a virus known to cause cervical cancer. What is worse she insisted that a fringe position is, in fact, a touchstone of conservatism.

From the transcript

BACHMANN: I’m a mom. And I’m a mom of three children. And to have innocent little 12-year-old girls be forced to have a government injection through an executive order is just flat out wrong. That should never be done. It’s a violation of a liberty interest.

That’s — little girls who have a negative reaction to this potentially dangerous drug don’t get a mulligan. They don’t get a do- over. The parents don’t get a do-over. That’s why I fought so hard in Washington, D.C., against President Obama and Obamacare.

President Obama in a stunning, shocking level of power now just recently told all private insurance companies, you must offer the morning-after abortion pill, because I said so. And it must be free of charge. That same level coming through executive orders and through government dictates is wrong. And that’s why again we have to have someone who is absolutely committed to the repeal of Obamacare and I am. I won’t rest until it’s appealed.

She followed up with Greta van Susteren (skip to 1:58) in her post debate interview by saying

The problem is, it comes with some very significant consequences. There’s a woman who came up crying to me tonight after the debate. She said her daughter was given that vaccine. She told me her daughter suffered mental retardation as a result of that vaccine. There are very dangerous consequences. It’s not good enough to take, quote, “a mulligan” where you want a do-over, not when you have little children’s lives at risk.

There are several threads of crazy running through this which leads one to believe that Bachmann, who if not anti-vaccine herself, was playing to the confusion the anti-vaccine fringe has managed to throw into what should be a fairly straightforward public policy debate.

As Ben Domenech points out in his indispensable The Transom:

But here’s the real reason this is a silly debate: the policy never went into effect. Not one girl was vaccinated under the policy. Not one shot was given. Demanding apologies from Perry for a policy that never went into effect gets tiresome after a while – particularly when Mitt Romney has never apologized for his namesake health care reforms, in effect in Massachusetts still today.

There is much to be criticized in the way Perry acted but no one received a “government injection,” whatever that may be. (For a more detailed take on what is wrong with the fringe anti-Gardasil argument visit Ace. It is worth the read.)

Let’s take the easy parts first. The HPV vaccine is safe. Some 26 million doses have been distributed in the United States and to date there have been about 1500 reports of serious incidents

A serious incident is defined as:

Any VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) report that indicated hospitalization, permanent disability, life-threatening illness, congenital anomaly or death is classified as serious. As with all VAERS reports, serious events may or may not have been caused by the vaccine. [italics mine]

Despite what you may read there is not a single fatality associated with the vaccine. Again from the CDC:

In the 32 reports confirmed, there was no unusual pattern or clustering to the deaths that would suggest that they were caused by the vaccine and some reports indicated a cause of death unrelated to vaccination. [italics mine]

The claim that Gardasil caused mental retardation is specious and seems calculated to appeal to the vaccines-cause-autism fringe. The international patient advocacy group, the Global and Regional Asperger Syndrome Partership, an organization with a vested interest in finding what causes Asperger Syndrome and autism, says:

”Congresswoman Bachmann’s decision to spread fear of vaccines is dangerous and irresponsible. There is zero credible scientific evidence that vaccines cause mental retardation or autism. She should cease trying to foment fear in order to advance her political agenda.”

Regularly on these threads we get people advocating “abstinence” as a way of combating HPV. Because sex, you know, merits cancer. The idea that we should allow some diseases free rein because we don’t like how they are spread strikes me as silly. Evidence indicates personal abstinence doesn’t work in regards to preventing the spread of HPV. It isn’t sufficient that you be abstinent. Your spouse must also have been abstinent prior to marriage and any/all former sexual partners of your spouse must have been abstinent. In the United States, by age 50 at least 80% of women will be infected with HPV.

While Bachmann is right, there is no do-over for girls who may be injured by the vaccine, she seems a lot less concerned that there is also no do-over for women who die from cervical cancer that could have been prevented. In this case Bachmann’s policy preference is the avoidance of hypothetical risk rather than preventing a real disease that kills people. This type of fuzzy – or cynically opportunistic – thinking is not what we need.

The “liberty interest” argument is just as silly. Unless you’re going to argue that every mandatory vaccine – like fluoridated water — is an affront to some “liberty interest,” using this line of attack on a vaccination that was always subject to parental consent simply defines liberty down to an absence of any personal or parental responsibility.

This particular attack was an own-goal by Bachmann in every conceivable way. It plays into the anti-science meme with which the Left is trying to festoon conservatism. Her constant invocation of “little” and “innocent” children gives one flashbacks to Hillary Clinton and her tossing the “for the children” mantra about. It was a senseless attack on Perry that played well with a segment of the debate studio audience. But it is one that makes Bachmann look extreme to the majority of GOP voters while making Perry more acceptable to nearly everyone else. If her goal was to take the lead from Rick Perry, something she can’t do even by the addition of all of Ron Paul’s supporters, she chose a suboptimal tactic.

The real question for Bachmann is, “if you had a vaccine that you knew prevented your kids from developing cancer would you support it being available.” This is all Perry did. His executive order made a very expensive vaccine affordable while at the same time allowing anyone who wanted to opt out to do so. This isn’t progressivism or liberalism. It isn’t even “compassionate conservatism.” It is common sense. In fact, it is exactly what Sarah Palin did as governor of Alaska.

It is a very conservative position

All of the Bachmann people out there who are complaining about Gardisil need to READ THE CONSTITUTION and the Federalist Papers. There is nothing that stops STATE governments from acting in the interests of public health. That is what TEXAS did. I get the point that if everything were opt-out it might be a threat to Liberty on a practical level but we’re talking cancer here.

Every state mandates vaccinations

Brookhaven (Diary) Tuesday, September 13th at 3:47PM EDT (link)

From mumps to rubella to polio, every state requires a long list of vaccinations. This meme that it is unpresedented and outrageous for a state to require a child to get a vaccination is is one long line of BS.

And let’s something else out in the open: the ONLY reason the Gardasil vaccine is controversial is because the disease is spread through sexual contact (as if getting a this vaccination somehow encourages sexual activity–it doesn’t). If it was spread by shaking hands nobody would be upset about “forcing innocent twelve year old girls to get a shot,” otherwise they’d be concerned about FITYOG’s to get a shot against rubella.

There are plenty of mandatory vaccinatiions for children

Brookhaven (Diary) Tuesday, September 13th at 4:20PM EDT (link)

diphtheria
pertussis
tetanus
hepatitis B
polio
measles
mumps
rubella
varicella (chicken pox)

All of these are mandatory in Georgia for children, yet I don’t see people running around franticly waving their hands over their heads and screaming that “innocent young girls” are being “forced” to have these vaccinations.

Michele Bachmann certainly must know there are all kinds of mandatory vaccinations for children (including hepititis B, which–as you pointed out–is a sexually transmitted disease). Her entire line of reasoning makes no sense, unless it is for raw political purposes.

Many ways to spread Hep B

You can catch Hep B by using a toothbrush that was used by an invested person. Or getting a tattoo from an infected needle (Pam Anderson).

Many ways to catch Hep B besides the sexual ways.

Unlike certain strains of HPV, it is not exclusively sexually transmitted.

It can be transmitted to infants during the birthing process. Giving them the shot soon after birth may help the babies fight the viruses from their infected mother. The comparison to the HPV is invalid.

I am not disagreeing with you on Bachmann. I will eventually have my daughters vaccinated against the cancer causing HPV strains, but not when they are 12.

See here:

The most common way of HPV transmission is by skin contact. Touching an infected skin or someone and subsequently touching one’s genitals without washing ones hands is the most common way of transmission of these viruses.

BTW, I am still an Aaron Gardner fan. I didn’t mean to be short in my earlier post, but I am shorter on time than ever these days.

I still plan to blame this whole kerfuffle on the Democrats. *They* are the ones who want to obfuscate the transmission method of carcinogenic HPV strains, because it doesn’t fit in with their narrative of sex without (both public and individual) consequences.

Aaron Gardner (Diary) Tuesday, September 13th at 7:26PM EDT (link)

I took no offense by the way, just wondered what made it unacceptable.

I do think that I would still error on the side of caution considering we can’t always control the circumstances of a child’s sexuality. It would be awful for a young victim of, say, a pedophile to have the problem compounded by also being afflicted with a preventable disease such as HPV, which could lead to cancer.

Especially if it is in the name of some distorted sense of liberty.

Gardisil and abstinence

perry4prez Tuesday, September 13th at 5:22PM EDT (link)

@Brookhaven, you are right – I think Bachmann’s real concern is that Gardisil could undermine abstinence education and traditional marriage just like handing out birth control in schools. But I don’t see the comparison, cancer is a lifelong threat including after marriage.

Lets just state the obvious

Goldwater_Conservative (Diary) Tuesday, September 13th at 3:38PM EDT (link)

women are just not any good at being a politician. Yes yes, I know men are not doing to good at it either, but at least they dont make these rookie mistakes. Thanks to: pelosi, cynthia mckinny, any senator from california, palin, debbie slauserman-whatever, angle, O’Donnell, sometimes hillary, and now bachmann….its going to be several decades from now till this country seriously considers a woman for President again. Sorry ladies, your groundbreakers have become bridge burners.

Goldwater: As a Texas female whose very first vote

pttx333 (Diary) Tuesday, September 13th at 4:01PM EDT (link)

at age 22 went proudly for Barry Goldwater, I agree with your statement. (The voting age in Texas at the time was 21.) Maybe I’m wrong, but I do believe it has to do with conservative females not being feminists and are not hung up on having a woman President at all costs. How silly is that? At this time in history, I see no female on the horizon who has the disposition/temperment or backbone to handle such an important job as President of the United States. Supporting roles, maybe, but leadership – not so much. Bachmann and Palin have burned any smidgen of support that I might have thought about prior to their despicable performances last night on the debate and then on Greta’s show. My candidate is, and always has been, Rick Perry. Please do feel free to speak against female candidates, it is past high time that someone did! Thank you!

yeah

Goldwater_Conservative (Diary) Tuesday, September 13th at 4:14PM EDT (link)

and let me ammend part of what I said, before the sexist police start coming. I dont mean to say a woman could not be a very good or even great leader of this country, but what I am saying is that thanks to the women who are being put in these high profile political positions and the subsequent disasters that they are becoming, its setting the perception back at least another 10 years.

That is an incredibly sexist statement, one I take

great offense to. Let’s take a look at all the men who have screwed up this country shall we?

The reason many of these females have imploded is partially due to the sexist media who will destroy any female candidate. Although I am not a huge fan of Palin and not even remotely close to supporting Hillary, you cannot deny that they have been excoriated more than any other male candidate.

Oh, and I can name one woman who would make an EXCELLENT President, it would be Gov. Nikki Haley of SC. Oh wait, didn’t the media drum up a false accusation against her, too.

Goldwater_Conservative (Diary) Tuesday, September 13th at 4:18PM EDT (link)

Two, I dont buy the notion that the media can destroy these woman. Do conservative woman have to deal with a double standard concerning the media? Hell yes. But the media cant destroy them unless they give them the ammunition to do it with. Now in Haley’s case, yes they tried, but it didint work because it wasnt true. But what I am saying is that thanks to palin, pelosi, and bachmann, its going to be much harder for haley to run for president if she ever wanted to.

I have no problem with the statement that some

runner12 (Diary) Tuesday, September 13th at 4:42PM EDT (link)

female politicians have made it harder for women to succeed by their gaffes. That is a legitimate point.

My problem was your first statement that said “Let’s just face it, women are just not good at being politicians”. This is a very broad generalization, as I happen to know of several who are quite good.

Now had you said, “Women can’t play professional football, hockey, etc.” that would be different. I am not a Leftist feminist, but a conservative one ( ie, I am not crazy).

That is why we are in the situation we’re in today. But that doesn’t mean that we vote for a woman just to change the gender and see if that will work. I do not disagree with your statement about Nikki Haley, but she isn’t a candidate or potential candidate for President and therefore isn’t on the horizon – yet.

All I know is that I will vote for whoever is the nominee against b.o. I just pray that I can do so without holding my nose again.

poltically incorrect statement. But lets look at the roster on both sides of the isle and most of this need to start with the main part, that being that the first woman speaker of the house is also the worst speaker of the house this country has ever suffered under.

Now lets look at the roster on both sides:

Dems have: Debbie Strauserman (ugggghh), diane finstien, hillary (and she has to be considered one of the few positive stories). There is nothing there outside of hillary that even they would brag about.

Lets look at their supreme court justices

Kagen and Sotermayor, both are clearly affirmative action type appointees, neither one would be considered an intelectual heavyweight. That leaves with Ginsburg as the intelectual and that really is all I have to say about that.

On our side
Palin (dear God)
Bachmann (she cant keep her foot out of her mouth)

way down the farm system we have Brewer, Haley, and Alloyte and the jury is still out on them but suffice to say that despite all the hype, women so far havent really made an effective (emphasis on effective) break through to the world of politics.

You just doubled-down as I was about to give

runner12 (Diary) Tuesday, September 13th at 4:55PM EDT (link)

you the benefit of the doubt that you just mis-typed or just typed before you thought.

First of all, the women on the Left you listed are LEFTISTS. Being crazy is a pre-requisite for membership. The fact that the first woman Speaker was awful has nothing to do with her gender, and everything to do with her neo-socialist views. For crying out loud, it is Nancy Pelosi! Heaven forbid you judge all women on that low standard.

Palin has made mistakes, as has Bachman. But their gaffes are not anything unique to females in politics. Remember the George Allen comment? It could be argued that we have ObamaCare because of the poor man’s gaffe. Should all
males be drummed out of politics?

Let’s judge politicians on merit, not gender.

Under stress, females are inclined to respond more emotionally than males do. Doesn’t always apply, but in most cases it is true. Those emotions can cloud judgment and bad choices end up being made.

Given what we’re up against, a female CIC would have to the proverbial iron-maiden and then some. I don’t have that confidence in any of the females in the race at this point.

If our national economy was stronger and we hadn’t gone through three years of having our current CIC alienate our allies, etc. etc., I might disagree with you, because this was a pretty sexist-type comment, you know.

I don't really agree, lineholder

aesthete (Diary) Tuesday, September 13th at 5:40PM EDT (link)

As a male, my absolute favorite boss was an AF Major who was a woman. Women have many attributes which recommend them for leadership — they tend to experience less “tunnel vision” than men, and thus can be very good at allocating resources where they’re needed. They tend to be less likely to be located on an extreme as far as personal attributes go — for example, there are much fewer women as a percentage who suffer from Down Syndrome than men, and less women as a percentage who have stratospheric IQs (to name two extremes). This makes it easier for them to socialize, empathize with, and understand “normal” people. Women also, in my experience, tend to be more selfless than men — looking out for the organization or group over themselves. This does not, of course, mean that all women correspond to these stereotypes, but there is no reason that women should be disqualified from participating in politics, given their many positive traits.

I have read enough about Guardisil and I am satisfied the issue is history with me. It’s dead.
Perry, just a bit off on his defense, should just say, hey, the opt out was big enough to drive a truck through. I attempted to enable those inclined to take advantage of the drug.
Bachmann is going to have to forget she ever mentioned it.
Her rant was embarrasing.
If she just went after immigration and tuition… there is a conversation there to be had.
I do think Perry needs to firm up on the border issue as we have illegals from all over the world using that avenue as an entrance point, including those from the Mid-East, a point not wasted on me.
Think…dirty bomb. Possible worst-case.
No, Michele…you are kicking a dead horse and people are starting to laugh.

This father of three girls is now a Perry fan.....

tampaconservative Tuesday, September 13th at 4:18PM EDT (link)

I couldn’t agree more Streiff…..

Ms. Bachmann was a consideration before last nights debate……now she is an “also-ran” in my book, along with Rick Santorum. They both turned ugly nasty and reminded me of the way liberals mislead people and get angry instead of simply discussing the facts.

One of our heroes once commented on how to treat fellow Republicans and I think he was rolling over in his grave last night. This is not the way I want my candidate to act regardless of whom they are debating. Perry admitted he could have handled it better and it should have been left at that…..to suggest that Perry took this action for a $5,000 donation is absurd and Bachmann knows that was a lie when she insinuated it out of desperation.

I think most honest, informed people realize that Perry took this action in an effort to save young women and for Bachmann and Santorum to attempt to turn this into a campaign issue is disgraceful. They should both leave the stage at this point and let us get on with the real race as they are no longer players in this election.

Perry should have simply looked at both of them and said “shame on you both….”.

completely agree

msbs05 (Diary) Tuesday, September 13th at 4:47PM EDT (link)

I like Bachmann, but she lost serious points with me last night. Her accusation was way off base. Perry would never pass an executive order over $5,000, its absurd. That is a small contribution that is made by all companies. He never followed through and has called it a mistake to not go through the legislature. Offering the vaccine is the very proper role of the state to most people, it allowed for parental choice despite what Bachmann said. She wanted an opt in over his opt out. Is that really such a controversy? No amount of slamming Perry is going to help her win, just put Romney in instead and we would all be much worse off for that nomination. She should stop her campaign, back Perry and stop the bleeding from her own image. We need to pull together against Romney and Obama, so real changes can be made in America.

This father of two girls will vote for Romney

LiveStronger Tuesday, September 13th at 4:50PM EDT (link)

I couldn’t support a candidate who handed out condoms to twelve-year old girls unless their parents took the time to sift through all of the junk mail they get from the school on the first day and say, “Hey, we should probably opt out of this.”

Therefore, I can’t support a Republican who takes money from Merck and then hands Merck the ability to undermine abstinence education that the girls parents may be trying to teach her.

You don’t give a teenager the keys to the Ferrari and then say, “Don’t drive it.” You teach the teenager that she has to be ready for the Ferrari first before she can have the keys.

Oart of your responsibility as a parent to those two girls is to be diligent in supporting them and not wanting to “sift through all the junk mail they get from school” is ignoring your parental responsibilities.

Also, a good parent who is teaching their daughters about abstinence should not feel threatened by a cancer vaccine. What a strange way to argue this point……do your daughters a favor and get them vaccinated whether they believe in abstinence or not. I assume that some day they will be ready for sexual behavior and this should not be an issue then….

Comparing your daughters health and sexual future to a Ferrari makes me question your ability as a parent and sort of indicates why you would be supporting Romney.

aesthete (Diary) Tuesday, September 13th at 5:44PM EDT (link)

If the Ferrari is supposed to represent sexuality, then teenagers already have the keys in their possession — and always will. Abstinence is about convincing this teen not to take out his or her sweet ride, not about taking away the keys (I’m not even sure what the real-world analogue for that would be — maybe a chastity belt?)

How about the other guy's Ferrari?

americanexpat Tuesday, September 13th at 7:58PM EDT (link)

I will be teaching my now 14mo daughter about abstinence when she’s older. I probably also will be getting her vaccinated against HPV. The one does not undermine the other, especially not when rape is a possibility. If that ever happens to my daughter, do I want her to have to live with cancer as well as with the memories and the knowledge that one or both of her parents is headed to jail for murdering the who did it? No, I don’t. Hence, the vaccination.

And as has been said before, lots of things are mandatory with opt-out clauses. Part of your job as a parent is to find out what those things are and opt out if you so desire. Perry made a mistake on this one, but it pales in comparison to Romney’s mistakes.

Scope (Diary) Tuesday, September 13th at 7:05PM EDT (link)

Thank you for that post. It goes straight to the heart of Palin’s charges of Crony Capitalism against Perry, both in her Sept. 3 speech, when many were unsure that she was actually attacking Perry, and then last night when she removed any doubt.

I still go back to the lack of Bachmann donation information with respect to her large donor, and industry donations. I also go back to the “ladies” attacking Perry, but being mum on Romney’s donors.

I’ve begun to form an opinion about the Palin speeches. Because she endorsed Perry in his Gov. race, and said great things about him in that race. Was she being honest then, or is she being honest about him now? Palin started a bus tour before Perry said he was interested, I believe. Perry says he is in fact interested, and starts getting some real support and attention. Palin abruptly stops her One Nation bus tour, and goes back to AK for jury duty. Perry decides to get in the race, and it is widely reported that he will announce at the RS gathering the same day of the Iowa straw poll. Palin starts up her bus tour again, and she appears in Iowa the day before the straw poll, and tells the Iowans, she will be back, watch for me. She tries to usurp Perry’s announcement, but, also usurps the straw poll winners, including Bachmann. She comes back to Iowa, with a video announcement that she is coming Sept. 3. She knocks Perry in the speech as a crony capitalist, and warns to watch for what donations they are receiving, as that is who they will be beholden to. She is pissed, because Perry said he wasn’t going to run, but then decides to run, and ruins her roll out and coronation. She’s mad as hell, because now there really isn’t any reason for her to run, there already is someone running that has a whole lot more experience than her. She’s mad as hell. She decides to go on Greta’s show, and join in with Bachmann’s attacks, even though Bachmann’s campaign manager came out and called Palin stupid on his second day on the job. Palin decides that it is more satisfying to join with the anti-Palin Bachmann campaign, rather than supporting the bastage that took her biggest chances away. Now she’s left to be seen as a tease. How dare he.

generally speaking, Palin endorses women. Even when there are conservative men in a primary. See Fiorina-Devore.

Palin wants to endorse Bachmann but won’t if it looks like Bachmann is going to flame out in the primary as it hurts Palin’s credibility.

Palin more likely than not isn’t going to get into the race because her poll numbers stink and she’s not going to want to finish behind Romney and Perry.

If she can knock Perry out, Perry’s support probably flows to Bachmann making her endorsement worth something.

it’s just politics. I don’t think either one of them are trying to pull any sort of inside-track elitist stunt, if that’s what you mean. Both ladies want top spot with the conservative block of voters. Perry’s star is sky-rocketing at the moment, and it’s just part of politics to try to knock that person off the top rung of the ladder, so to speak.

I just hope that they keep in mind that the left would LOOOOVVVVEEEE for some conservative to hand them some “right-wing-nut-extremist” narrative that the left can use against us. Maybe that’s why I’d rather that they stuck to attacking Obama and focusing on the most important issues our nation is facing rather than getting into the pit-bull fighting ring against each other.

This is exactly why in the old days the party picked the candidate

The unfounded, dishonest tactics by these two women are far far over the top of politics as usual. Both women have engaged in dishonest smears that you and I both know are not helpful to any Republican candidate. You yourself have called for honest debate, honest vetting of the issues, and getting away from the piling on garbage. Palin and Bachmann get hyper emotional about the Grrdasil issue, but don’t stop there. They get into accusing Perry as an easily bought off candidate. Rush brought it home for me today. They are now ganging up on making Perry look like a criminal by calling him a crony capitalist, when what they claim is not crony capitalism at all. GE and Obama is crony capitalism. Perry taking donations from a corporation is quid pro quo. As Rush said, there is no evidence at all, whatsoever that Perry has been bought off by anyone.

This ain’t your grandfather’s D or R party. It has gotten into combat region with R’s trying to destroy R’s. The establishment left & right hates Perry because he tells the truth.
Bachmann just pukes out wild hysteria with no facts, kinda like the lefties.

Those who had once simpered: “I don’t want to destroy the rich, I only want to seize a little of their surplus to help the poor, just a little, they’ll never miss it!” – then, later, had snapped: “The tycoons can stand being squeezed; they’ve amassed enough to last them for three generations” – then, later, had yelled: “Why should the people suffer while businessmen have reserves to last a year?” – now were screaming: “Why should we starve while some people have reserves to last a week?” – Atlas Shrugged

Actually I was thinking Karl Rove

was writing her checks from his American Crossroads org., and then there are all the Bushies, and yes even Cheney. With Bachmann coming in at 4% on the latest poll, released the day of the debate, she knows now that she has nothing to lose, and will only continue to pummel Perry who took her place in the limelight. Same thing with Palin. Out of a high school variety of bared claws vindictivness, they will not stop at anything. The more they say and do against Perry, the more often Bachmann is invited on the leftist MSM. Of course Hannity, O’Reilly and Greta will give the esteemed Mz. Palin as much time as she wants now, despite the fact that before now, she made her celebrity appearances very infrequently. And their supporters argued to the death when some rightly called them opportunists and money grubbers.

In Defense of Bachmann

clearasday Tuesday, September 13th at 6:16PM EDT (link)

Bachmann’s take on the Gardasil issue is more complex than many here are acknowledging. She raises legitimate concerns over who ultimately gets to make healthcare decisions. Conservatives should agree that it is the individual, not some politician.

Sure, after many decades of widespread use we can feel pretty good about the safety of most childhood vaccines, but that doesn’t mean that every vaccine that comes down the pike should be mandated. Flu vaccines aren’t mandated even though it kills far more people than those who might someday get cancer from HPV. We should be concerned about what factors are guiding decisions about the safety and efficacy of medications, treatments, etc., especially in regard to mandates for their use. There’s nothing crazy about that.

I intend to watch all the candidates right up to the day of the primary election, which is still months away. If there’s one thing I’ve learned: every politician eventually disappoints – it’s just a matter of when and on what scale. The fact that Perry’s first instinct was to use an executive order in this case is a legitimate issue. Bachmann’s belief that taking Gardasil should be an individual choice is also fair game. Big government, state-run healthcare, illegal immigration and global warming fanatics concern me more. Those calling for some to drop out of the race or shut up mystify me. This is what the run-up to the primary is all about, folks. Sheesh.

All righty then – isn’t RomneyCare and ObamaCare a much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much bigger issue than what Perry did????

And most of the pundits miss the facts in Perry’s case.

1.) He did issue an EO
2.) The Texas legislature and the people of Texas showed their dis-pleasure.
3.) Perry got an earful
4.) The program was killed.
5.) No 12 year old girls were strapped down and given shots.

1.) ObamaCare – Rammed through Congress
2.) Most of the country showed it’s dis-pleasure.
3.) Obama & dems got an earful.
4.) The program was funded by the tune of $100 billion
in the legislation.
5.) HHS has rolled out ObamaCare
6.) HHS has issued waivers for favored parties….Crony something???
7.) 12 year old girls will probably be strapped down to
give forced abortions…..no parental consent needed.
I have not found the opt-out clause for parents to prevent abortions??

So, what am I missing???
Who do you want to see debating Obama????
Mr. EO – or Mr. RomneyCare???

Those who had once simpered: “I don’t want to destroy the rich, I only want to seize a little of their surplus to help the poor, just a little, they’ll never miss it!” – then, later, had snapped: “The tycoons can stand being squeezed; they’ve amassed enough to last them for three generations” – then, later, had yelled: “Why should the people suffer while businessmen have reserves to last a year?” – now were screaming: “Why should we starve while some people have reserves to last a week?” – Atlas Shrugged

I’m glad I’m not the only one who sees this as a non-issue compared to much more damaging healthcare decisions/laws.

Addressing your points: I am against state-run healthcare, therefore I am against Obamacare and Romneycare. I am glad to see Perry acknowledge his mistake in using an EO with Gardasil. It’s a small issue, but it’s not irrelevant.

I feel the ire directed at Bachmann on this issue is out of proportion. I’m not on anyone’s side at this point, as the race has only just begun, but I welcome the vetting process. There’s nothing wrong with the candidates trying to expose what they see as their opponents weaknesses. The more information, the better. McCain tried to play Mr. Nice Guy with Obama and look where that got him (and us).

As for debates, Perry is folksy and direct, and Romney is articulate and quick on his feet, so it’s a toss up. The race isn’t over yet. What’s the hurry?

This vaccine thing may be a good discussion to have after the country has been saved from the Socialists and returned to the people. What was she thinking?
Romney also tried to pick an argument. So sad.not
Candidate, tell me why YOU are the best candidate, I’m interested in hearing you tear down your opponents to advance yourself.
Particularly if a vaccine issue or a 5k donation is the best ammo you have. Really now.
Sean gave her pretty much a free pass on his show today, of course, he also helped get Lieberman re-elected,,,,
Bachman slid right off my short list. I’m glad she showed her pettiness early on. I had such high hopes for her. Oh, well.

Bachmann's been getting eclipsed lately,

kestrel (Diary) Tuesday, September 13th at 8:22PM EDT (link)

but at least she is going down fighting, which I respect. Perry hit her with a strange surprise (He’s offended? Where did he get that? From the liberal victim pool?) yet Bachmann hit him back forcefully enough (admittedly, with the first thing she found at hand to grab) that he lost his footing for the duration of the issue. If he hadn’t been able to catch his breath while Santorum was subsequently speaking, Perry might have looked worse than “not so great” on this. I agree that his concluding words should have been, simply, “I’ve said that I’d do it differently now. There’s nothing more to say.” I don’t think he expected to be hit back with any effectiveness, and I doubt any of the others could have made him lose his crisp control.

Michele Bachmann has a good future, although I can’t guess in what capacity her considerable talents will be most useful in the years ahead. Putting this vaccine issue aside, she seems to understand the public better than most elected officials, which is why she gives the impression she will not only repeal ObamaCare, but gore it, gut it, stomp on it, incinerate it, and send the ashes into a black hole in outermost space. This is what the majority of the public wants done, figuratively speaking. Rush was talking today about the need to focus on Obamacare, and so far, Bachmann is the only one doing it.

Incidentally, Rush also said, and I agree, that Republicans should probably put Social Security on a back burner as a matter of prioritizing. Someone at RS asked the other day, “Where do you start on reforming entitlements, particularly SS and Medicare, which are very different.” Well, not only is Medicare going broke faster, but it is a natural place to start because of the need to repeal Obamacare and replace it with market-based reform. The fact that Medicare is driving the skyrocketing of healthcare costs is beyond dispute, and to paraphrase Paul Ryan, market-based reform will lower costs by giving seniors “the power to deny business to inefficient providers” rather than by rationing, as Obamacare will do. Healthcare experts have been recommending market-based reform for 30 years now, including Bill Clinton’s advisers, and Obama’s unprecedented level of profligate spending is forcing us to finally face the problem. Paul Ryan is a good pace setter on these issues.

Anyway, piling on Bachmann the way some are doing here today is, at best, uncalled for, and at worst, despicable.

Bachmann deserves what she gets

JSobieski (Diary) Tuesday, September 13th at 9:19PM EDT (link)

She is the tough lady on the budget, but she backs away from every way to actually implement cuts. She shows no leadership on the actual work that needs to get done.

Medicare? She supported the Ryan Roadmap with an “asterisk” instead of actually defending medicare reform. Gutless.

Social Security? She takes the opportunity to fan democrat talking points and fear mongering. Opportunistic and gutless.

Flattening the tax code? She opposes removing any of the deductions in exchange of a flatter rate. Totally non-creative

The only way Bachmann can regain my respect is if she puts together some kind of viable plan for proceeding. She is all generalities, which alleviates the need for making difficult decisions.

In summary, Bachmann is a great attacker and bomb thrower, but she is a big zero in the leadership and solution department.

Bachmann draws more attention away from Obamacare by focusing on vaccines and ponzi schemes than the good she accomplishes by talking about Obamacare.

Did you know that China has been losing manufacturing jobs since 1995? For the specific data, see Table 1 in the following link: http://www.bls.gov/opub/mlr/2005/07/art2full.pdf

Bachmann is done. Period

unclefred (Diary) Tuesday, September 13th at 8:57PM EDT (link)

Go back and review the attack. She ignores the opt-out provision despite the fact that it was referenced less than a minute before she spoke. She ignores why it was an opt-out as opposed to an opt-in. She ignores the fact that NO child was vaccinated under the EO. She misrepresents the actual facts to make an emotional argument about parental rights.

You could say that she lied, but that would require that we prove her intent. Even if that case is hard to make we can say with assurance that she attempted to smear Perry.

Not presidential. Not qualified. Dishonorable. Go back to the congress where you add value and learn about dignity and honor and maybe in a decade or two come back and try again.

Did you notice that when Bachmann was attacking Perry, she refused to look at him?

Scope (Diary) Tuesday, September 13th at 9:32PM EDT (link)

She was looking in the opposite direction. That exchange was replayed and replayed today on TV. She wouldn’t/couldn’t look at Perry when she made her accusations. If you can’t look someone in the eye that you are attacking, your attack is suspicious.

Therefore as leader, a conservative leader it is of up most importance to convince others of their individual responsibility. Michele Bachmann I think missed making this point assertively and Rick Perry has concerns.

AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS STATEMENT ON HPV VACCINE

For Immediate Release: September 13, 2011

AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS STATEMENT ON HPV VACCINE

By: O Marion Burton, MD, FAAP, president, American Academy of Pediatrics

“The American Academy of Pediatrics would like to correct false statements made in the Republican presidential campaign that HPV vaccine is dangerous and can cause mental retardation. There is absolutely no scientific validity to this statement. Since the vaccine has been introduced, more than 35 million doses have been administered, and it has an excellent safety record.

“The American Academy of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Academy of Family Physicians all recommend that girls receive HPV vaccine around age 11 or 12. That’s because this is the age at which the vaccine produces the best immune response in the body, and because it’s important to protect girls well before the onset of sexual activity. In the U.S., about 6 million people, including teens, become infected with HPV each year, and 4,000 women die from cervical cancer. This is a life-saving vaccine that can protect girls from cervical cancer.”

There's a point about vaccinations

lineholder (Diary) Wednesday, September 14th at 8:54AM EDT (link)

that I really haven’t heard mentioned as of yet. When it comes to medical illnesses such as Diptheria, Polio, Measles, Mumps, etc., progression of the illness is usually rather rapid and the symptoms are plain to see. With other illnesses such as Hepatitis or HPV, that isn’t necessarily the case. In these illnesses, early detection can make a huge amount of difference.

Already in our generation, we’re seeing a shortage of primary care physicians. These are the doctors who would be most likely to identify such illnesses early. If trends continue as they have, there will be even greater shortages of primary care doctors in the next generation.

Vaccinations aren’t a cure all, but they do serve an important purpose in this context. It is awkward all the same, because I do believe in freedom of choice. I wouldn’t want to see government going overboard with executive fiats mandating a bunch of unnecessary vaccinations solely for the purpose of nanny-state intervention. But I can see how risks to the general public play into the situation, particularly in light of projected shortages of doctors in the years to come.
