Mitt Romney’s supporters have been dogging Governor Perry on him acting as Texas campaign manager for Al Gore’s abortive 1988 presidential run as one of the Seven Dwarfs. The critique runs, dishonestly I might add, that Al Gore was an environmental kook then, ergo Perry is an environmental kook. Because something.
This is just balderdash. In 1988, Al Gore was a moderate-conservative senator from Tennessee who was a very attractive candidate. His descent into self parody started much later.
I rarely resort to publishing oppo material circulated by campaigns but I am making an exception today. File this particular story under “sauce for the gander.”
If personnel equal policy we have a hint from Mitt Romney’s appointments while governor of Massachusetts what his administration will look like. Van Jones may not be recalled but it may not make much difference.
In 2003, Romney chose a hard core environmental activist to be Secretary of Commonwealth Development. In this position he was charged with developing a scheme to restrict “greenhouse gas” emissions. According to the Wall Street Journal:
Just days after his 2002 election, Mr. Romney hired Douglas Foy, one of the state’s most prominent environmental activists, and put him in charge of supervising four state agencies. … With Mr. Foy by his side, Mr. Romney joined activists outside an aging, coal-fired plant in 2003 to show his commitment to the emissions caps. “I will not create jobs or hold jobs that kill people, and that plant, that plant kills people,” he said.
But when it became obvious that he would not win reelection as governor, Romney set his sights on the GOP presidential nomination. In remaking himself he repudiated his own secretary carrying out his own plan.
Significantly, two of Romney’s appointments have how found a home in the Obama White House.
Gina McCarthy, the chief EPA clean air regulator, also worked as an environmental regulator for then-Governor Romney. Her role now is as point guard (nyuk) in the Obama Administrations fight to make coal fired electric generating plants extinct.
EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson has taken most of the fire from Republicans as her agency rolls out a slew of controversial new climate and clean air rules. But McCarthy, the EPA assistant administrator of the Office of Air and Radiation, has taken on much of the heavy lifting of writing, structuring, and implementing the rules.
“Lisa’s the coach and Gina’s the quarterback” in the work of rolling out new clean air regulations, said Daniel Weiss, an energy and climate policy expert at the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank with close ties to the Obama administration. “She’s running the plays, improvising on the line.”
Another Romney environmental adviser in the effort to regulate “greenhouse gases” is now Obama’s Director of Science and Technology Policy, John Holdren. Dr. Holdren has some exotic views:
President Obama’s “science czar,” John Holdren, once floated the idea of forced abortions, “compulsory sterilization,” and the creation of a “Planetary Regime” that would oversee human population levels and control all natural resources as a means of protecting the planet — controversial ideas his critics say should have been brought up in his Senate confirmation hearings.
[...]
Those plans include forcing single women to abort their babies or put them up for adoption; implanting sterilizing capsules in people when they reach puberty; and spiking water reserves and staple foods with a chemical that would make people sterile.
To help achieve those goals, they formulate a “world government scheme” they call the Planetary Regime, which would administer the world’s resources and human growth, and they discuss the development of an “armed international organization, a global analogue of a police force” to which nations would surrender part of their sovereignty.
Holdren has gone to some lengths to repudiate those views but one has to question “confirmation conversions.”
So Rick Perry supported Al Gore for president in 1988. Romney’s environmental policy team now works for Obama. Sauce for the goose. Sauce for the gander.

As I said in another post, Romney completely ignored the housing shortage when he was Governor. If he had solved that problem, that Congressional seat would not have been lost. reggie182 Friday, October 7th at 3:51PM EDT (link)Something told me that Perry’s defenders would criticize the source of the information, rather than dispute the information itself.
Perry had a grand total of two TX Supreme Court appointments and gave one to a relatively inexperienced Democrat. It was obviously racial pandering.
Republican Steven Wayne Smith ran a heroic campaign against Rodriquez and won. Unfortunately, Perry for some reason (vindictivness? pettiness?) actively worked to unseat him in the next election despite the fact that he was a solidly conservative jurist.
Now to answer your question. Why should anyone care? Well if lousy Supreme Court selections and racial pandering don’t matter to them, I guess they shouldn’t.

While touting his own academic achievements at the University of Texas School of Law, Smith disparaged Green’s academic achievements, namely that Green had graduated from St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio, a smaller and less well known law school. Criticism of a candidate
reggie182 Friday, October 7th at 9:13PM EDT (link)With respect to personal destruction, I have never said anything that would approach the blanket accusation of ‘heartlessness’. Does that stick in my craw a bit? You bet it does. I still remember several years ago when the debate over immigration reform caused some in our fold (ex: Lindsey Graham) to use absolutely foul language against their core supporters. i’ve never used language against Perry like that.
Yes Perry apologized for that comment, and no it is not disqualifying, but I can still take it into account. It was over a week before he realized what a horrible thing that was to say to CONSERVATIVES who are fed up with that kind of cheap insult. Not to mention the “punish them for their last names” remark (said twice within one answer), which I don’t believe he ever apologized for. If he can use that kind of language against conservatives, I don’t feel out of line for focusing criticism upon him.
He’s fair game, just as Romney is, just as Cain is, just as the rest of the field are. There is a difference between intra-party criticism and trolling. There is nothing more I want to see than BHO sent back to Illinois or wherever.
And I must ask, have you ever called someone out for going a bit too rough on any of the other candidates, especially Romney? I don’t know. I’m just asking. Is our chief goal here to have a variety of perspectives within our party heard to debate the pros and cons of all the candidates, or are we simply to prop up Rick Perry?
If I am wrong in what I am saying about Rick Perry, fine enough. I actually was wrong about the number of TX Supreme Court picks and as soon as I realized it, I fessed up, immediately. Let the debate continue.

I blog in spurts, and there is little doubt that your dismissal of RomneyCare [mandating individual purchase of a service/product] is problematic, but the overall “message” is that you may wish to disavow the “Perry-Only” bias [which isn't true in my experience] and dig into the gravamen of the discussion.

I remember a story told to me once about an old rabbi
JSobieski (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 8:29PM EDT (link)He apparently said that in any debate or argument, both parties should be forced to articulate the position of the other side in a sufficiently persuasive and comprehensive manner (requiring the approval of the proponent of that position) before either side can attack that position. There is a lot to be said for this technique.
Acknowledge whatever truth exists in what the other person is saying. It makes what you (and I mean “you” in the broad generic sense, not in reference to any particular individual). One thing that Obama does absolutely incorrectly is that he never addresses our side’s arguments in an honest way.
People who support Perry should admit, hey his debate performances are disappointing as was his justification on “compassionate” grounds for the in state tuition thing. Conversely, people who oppose Perry should acknowledge that the Texas economy is humming, and that Perry as governor for the past 10 years must have some smarts to at least not screw that up.
The issue is really how we weigh the positives and negatives, not in the existence of the positives and negatives. If both sides can acknowledge that reality, debate is actually helpful.
Did you know that China has been losing manufacturing jobs since 1995? For the specific data, see Table 1 in the following link: http://www.bls.gov/opub/mlr/2005/07/art2full.pdf

Smith vs Green in Texas
Freedoms Truth (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 5:24PM EDT (link)Steven Wayne Smith’s claim to fame was winning the Hopwood case.
How Smith won and later lost is known in Texas. reggie182 is correct on this. Smith was an independent conservative who took on a Perry appointee and won. Texas GOP ‘establishment’ went after Smith in 2004, supporting a judge named Green.
I recall this particular race because this race had collateral damage. Perry and Cornyn had pre-primary robo-calls telling people to support Green for Justice prior to the primary. Another guy named Green jumped into the 3rd court of appeals race (Texas court) against a real Republican, and Hispanic, Ernest Garcia. I was shocked on primary day when canvassing that even ‘informed’ people were voting for Green instead of Garcia. Despite being a snake-in-the-grass, the phony candidate Green beat out Garcia. So ironically, the race to take out a guy who defeated a Hispanic Republican led to the defeat of another Hispanic Republican downballot.

Perry and his good judicial appointments
Freedoms Truth (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 5:42PM EDT (link)It seems some of the knee-jerk reaction is to dismiss the Xavier Rodriguez appointment. Actually, the Rodriguez appointment was a non-conservative appointment. But, on the flipside, Perry has made many good judicial appointments, most of them solid conservatives.
Perry has appointed black and hispanic Justices, and if that has a bit of pandering in it, so be it. I dont believe there was a compromise in judicial philosophy or quality to make these appointments.
It is NOT correct to say he appointed only 2 Texas Supreme Court jurists. He had a hand in almost all of them (including Paul Green and the 2004 race). I count 7 out of 9 he picked or had a hand in getting there. Most of those appointments and his lower court picks are solid conservatives and good jurists.

Debra H. Lehrmann was appointed to the Court by Governor Rick Perry on June 21, 2010.

Have you forgotten, living in the San Francisco of the Southwest, that justices in Texas are elected, not appointed?
Perry could only “appoint” a justice to fill a vacancy. Then that justice would have to run in the next election.
But, I got to hand it to you in Travis County; you forced Lloyd Doggett on the rest of the district again so Doggett could continue getting richer than he already is.

How many of these
Paula (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 3:31PM EDT (link)flip flops and “changes of heart” are we supposed to tolerate from Romney? It’s one thing when we have a candidate who has gone through some sort of religious conversion or who has hit rock bottom and gone through rehab and has suddenly come to his senses and changed positions. In those cases, one can account for drastic changes of opinion on important social/moral and policy issues. With Romney, it seems he just changed his mind. This is why so many find his story incredible, as in non-credible.
Aside from the big problem of possibly electing (another) president who has trouble telling the truth, if he wins the nomination, although he may get the votes of evangelicals and social conservatives, they will not work to get him elected. They won’t work the phone banks, they won’t go door to door, they won’t talk about him enthusiastically to their undecided friends, neighbors, and fellow church members and they won’t send him money. He will be missing a huge chunk of grassroots support. The same thing happened with McCain. Romney may get a percentage of the moderate vote, but are they going to be his boots on the ground? Good luck with that.

Next93 (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 4:17PM EDT (link)I remember when Bush Sr. went through a viscious primary season running against Reagan. Bush coined the term “vodoo economics”, and he was the only pro-choice candidate in the GOP field. Then, after Reagan got the nomination, Bush was offered the VP slot and, lo! He suddenly found that Reaganomics was brilliant and that life began at conception.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why he was a one-term president (and lucky to get that!).

Romney supporters still saying Perry was..
onemovoter (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 4:00PM EDT (link)a Texas campaign manager for Al Gore? I’m still scratching my head as to why politically active folks still promote this falsehood.
As usually we all should take to task anyone who tries to promote that falsehood, to call them out on it and make them admit the truth.
Of course this will be just one of many that we’ll have to correct.

Having ethical qualms about pushing a lie presupposes an athical core to begin with
AceInTX (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 6:49PM EDT (link)I think the record shows Romney and his supporters aren’t bothered with quaint niceties like ethics and truthfulness.
Has anyone taken note that the crowd in the Romney camp are the people who openly say the way for a Republican to win the White House is to run to the right in the primary and to run to the middle in the general….they think this is genius and makes them smarter than anyone else in the room but they are t0o stupid to see how this little quip exposes them as liars and frauds…
What they are saying is…Lets ACT like in order to fool the base in order to get elected and then unmask to become what we are in the general.
They end up standing naked in front of everyone exposed by the words from their own mouths and all the while they are too stupid to know they are naked and need to come in out of the cold

Check Wikipedia
OregonConservative (Diary) Saturday, October 8th at 2:10AM EDT (link)You might want to check Perry’s Wikipedia page. It states (in part):
In 1987, Perry voted for a $5.7 billion tax increase proposed by Republican governor Bill Clements.[18] Perry supported Al Gore in the 1988 Democratic presidential primaries and chaired the Gore campaign in Texas.[19][20] In 1989, Perry announced that he was switching parties, becoming a Republican.[21]
This might be the reason some people make the claim.
That speaks volumes
PowerToThePeople (Diary) Saturday, October 8th at 4:22AM EDT (link)about the person who would form opinions and a world view based on a site like Wiki considering it is written by anyone and has been shown to be factually lacking many times in the past.
If a person is too stupid to confirm what they read on wiki, then there is no hope for a cure for their stupidity.
Same can be said about most web sites
OregonConservative (Diary) Saturday, October 8th at 1:16PM EDT (link)I agree that a person should not form opinions and a world view based on a single website. I never said the Wikipedia article was accurate. Rather, in response to the above comment “I’m still scratching my head as to why politically active folks still promote this falsehood”, I was simply showing why some people may believe that Perry was Al Gore’s Texas campaign manager.
Politically active people should also not form an opinion about candidates without seeking out both sides of the argument. Unfortunately, a lot of people have knee-jerk reactions to incorrect claims about many candidates (whether it’s Perry, Romney, Cain, etc.) without seeking to understand the issue fully. If a person only seeks for information and understanding from sources that are mostly antagonistic or one-sided, that person will never form a correct opinion.
I finally broke ranks with the Democrats because I couldn't vote for Al Gore
Next93 (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 4:13PM EDT (link)That was in 2000, after Gore had said publicly that he wanted to see the internal combustion engine, and 12 yeaers after Perry was his Texas campaign manager.
If I repudiated the politics I was raised in because of the internal combustion engine, I’m certainly not going to vote for a candidate who wants to outlaw coal. Particularly not one who was “for outlawing coal before he was against it”. At least I can count on Gore to continue to be an environmental extremist, Romney’s geen-ness depends on which way the political winds are blowing, and I have to wonder what other issues that applies to.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if Romeney wins the nomination, I’ll vote independent or libertarian. I can’t trust him to support repeal of Obamneycare, and I can’t trust him not to support some sort of cap-and-trade.
At the same time, I’m having a hard time getting behind Perry after his performance in the last debate – I don’t need another “conservative” to lecture me about “compassion” or call me a racist – I get quite enough of that from my liberal brother.
This is shaping up to be a really bad election for me.

As a matter of fact
PowerToThePeople (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 6:38PM EDT (link)he is correct. I say that from someone who has been quite heartless when it comes to illegals and their offspring.
My beliefs were that A) the reason they are here was because of a crime and B) their children while not guilty of the crime should not benefit because of the crime.
It has taken the words of many here and on the outside to make me rethink my heartless belief system and here is why.
States are limited as to what they can do to stop illegal immigration. So they have a problem that they can not cure, so they have to make the best of it. About the only thing states can do is limit the protection of illegals within their own state such as sanctuary cities but even then, without the feds doing their job to deport illegals, their ability to do anything is limited.
So now states have the children of those who broke the law in their schools, hospitals, jails, wards, etc. They can either take the screw you route and end up with generations of uneducated law breakers or uneducated wards of the state or they can open the doors within reason to ensure any child of an illegal has every chance to better themselves and become productive to society.
The dream act is not some free ride and when I understood this, my attitude changed. The student, regardless of who they are, has to excel in school and then they are given certain rates in order to be able to afford school. These grants and such are paid via taxes of which even illegals pay their part through sales tax, property tax, even employment tax. These kids have paid into the system, they should get back the same as anyone else if they have worked hard and studied hard.
These kids are not at fault for the parents actions and the ones who benefit from the dream act have earned it just as the white or black kid who receives the benefits has. We either do our best to reward hard work so that these hard workers become great citizens or we stay heartless and pay the price when our homes are robbed, kids are beaten, someone is murdered, etc or pay an even higher price via welfare and incarceration.
Something must be done about illegal immigration and the first step would be to end anchor baby status as this would give less incentive to come here. But until the feds do their job and stop the parents, there is financial and social benefits to encouraging the children of illegals to work hard and letting them know if they do, they will receive the same breaks kids of citizens get since both kinds are paying for the benefits.
It costs a state a hell of a lot more to constantly pay welfare benefits or pay for someone to be locked up then to grant citizen rights to the hard working children of tax paying illegals.
I didn't think you had this level of common sense.
Tbone (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 8:10PM EDT (link)I applaud you and agree 100%
Envisioning when all that is Left is the Right.
Mostly agree
dapala Friday, October 7th at 10:49PM EDT (link)I do see this point. An employed law abiding taxpayer is always preferred to a revenue sucking inmate or a unemployed welfare charge regardless of how their parents got to the country. The issue is not black and white on the state level because, as you say, the states are kind of stuck with what is- not with what should be. Until the Feds get a decent immigration policy in place the states are left to pick up the pieces and make their own way.
So even though I see why Texas made this choice regarding in state tuition (and it was not controversial in the state) I don’t understand how Perry can also be against a border fence. This makes no sense to me at all. Once a fence is built- it stays there regardless of funding or who is in the white house. I have a low tech fence around my own yard and hey, it works pretty well 24/7. The most basic of border dilineations is a fence or a wall. Will it stop 100% of people from coming, no it won’t. But being against a simple border fence tells me that Perry is not serious on this issue. Neither is Romney so what to do. Cain?
And in the process create another attractant for illegals
Next93 (Diary) Saturday, October 8th at 12:40AM EDT (link)So we tell illegals “don’t come here, but if you do, we’ll give your kids a break on college tuition”. That doesn’t make any sense at all. Particularly when you’re not willing to offer the same break to the children of citizens who live in the next state over.
As for spawning “generations of uneducated lawbreakers”, ever since LBJ we’ve been told “either pay for this entitlement or pay for more prisons”. Guess what? We’ve got an HHS budget that’s bigger (adjusted for inflation) than the entire government under LBJ. Trillions of dollars to this program and that, and we have more jails and more lawbreakers, and the poverty level is still 14%, same as it was when the Great Society began.

snowshooze (Diary) Saturday, October 8th at 12:46AM EDT (link)And it is pretty well established..so many still kicking this dead horse.
What is YOUR solution?
Keep the 2nd and 3rd generation illegal immigrants uneducated and have to feed them? Or do you need someone to clean your house cheap and pick your crops?
He isn’t giving them a break at all. He is allowing them to attend at full in-State resident rates.
If you want to try to paint that as welfare, I can’t stop you or the multitudes like you.
My solution
Next93 (Diary) Saturday, October 8th at 1:27AM EDT (link)Should we ever elect a president who’s serious abourt this, here’s what I’d suggest:
1) Set up a government database that makes confirming citizenship and SSN as easy as a mouse click.
2) Start jailing people who hire illegals. In-person jail time for the hiring manager, business owner, farmer, or homeowner who hands a paycheck to an illegal.
3) In addition to the jail term, impose a significant fine that will be split with any whistle-blower, including illegals who are leaving the country; we’ll hand them the check as they get off the bus at the border.
4) Empower the local cops swing by places with a building permit and do citizenship checks instead of manning the speed traps.
Oh, and it’s *In State* tuition we’re talking about, so yes, there is a discount. Even if there wasn’t, we’re still talking about taking the place of a citizen or someone who’s come here legally.
Obama was The One in 2008.

snowshooze (Diary) Saturday, October 8th at 1:43AM EDT (link)In State tuition… that is FULL residential rate.
We have e-verify, I have my employees fill out the I-9 and I inspect their credentials..

Texas or any other State is powerless.
So, back to the Governor of Texas…
What would you do in his place?
And who are you supporting at this point?
Do you know a college that didn't take all the students they could handle?
Next93 (Diary) Saturday, October 8th at 2:05AM EDT (link)Colleges make money from students. Even the (allegedly) not-for-profit ones. Empty seats mean lost revenue. Ain’t gonna happen.
“In-state” tuition means you’re getting a lower rate than a kid from another state can get. I live in Wisconsin, my kids would be paying a higher rate in Texas than the children of illegals.
I realize that my stuff is federal. That’s why I said “If we ever get a president who’s serious about immigration.” Do you really think that a Governor who will lecture me on my lack of compassion over HIS Dream act is going to become a President who will implement any of that?
What I would do in Perry’s place? I would pass a bill based on Arizona’s SB-1070. I WOULDN’T provide in-state tuition to illegals.
As for who I’m looking at, I’ve gone into that down-thread. But at this point it doesn’t really matter – I voted for McCain last time because he was the best the GOP could offer (?), at this point I’m trying to make sure we don’t get handed another pig in a poke. At this point, the candidates should be held up to a very VERY strong light, and attacking someone for not loving Your Guy, rather than discussing Your Guy’s strengths, isn’t exactly endearing me to Your Guy.

Hmm. No, I cannot explain the in’s and out’s of that mess.
Needless to say, if the Federal Government did their Constitutional duty, we needn’t be having this discussion.
Perry, Governor of a State with nearly 30% Hispanic Heritage, would never have been elected if he were a proponent of hanging every illegal alien from the nearest tree as some might suggest he do.
He is forced to play catch and release, and cannot deport, he does not have that power.
He is dealing with a mess, and I will be darned if I can think of a better way than his. Yep, students…at least they might contribute to society. And they are supposed to be working toward legal status… no, I do not know the particulars on that either.
Anyway, welcome to RedState, I have learned a lot here, been bloodied in battle, even won a couple bouts.. it is my favorite blog. I hope to see you around. I just put the girls down…now it is my turn at last.

I understand your point Next
PowerToThePeople (Diary) Saturday, October 8th at 4:37AM EDT (link)and if the only point you had was that illegal immigration and the failure of the fed gov to stem the tide is a major problem, I agree 100%. It is a major concern and one that needs correcting. BUT
States have no control over that. The Arizona bill you talk about is yet to become law because of fed interference and even if it becomes law, still has little affect since it is still reliant on the feds to deport. If the bill gets past the courts, it will only be an effective law during friendly fed administrations.
This is the problem Texas has. They can do little to stem the tide of illegals in their state, All they can do is work with what they have and that has always been very little and is even less under the current administration.
Not too mention state gov are supposed to answer to their people, not everyone else. The state of Texas like the dream act, hence it was the right thing to do in that state. In my state, no way it would be passed so it would not be a good thing here, but we are not Texas hence it is of no concern to us what they do.
The only thing that I care about is whether or not Perry or the other candidates will enforce current fed law on illegals and do what is needed to stem the tide. Building a fence is some areas may be part of the cure, but it is ludicrous to think it is wise to build a fence around the whole border, that a fence will do anything to stop illegals, and that a fence is the answer. That is why I like what Perry has stated about what he would do. Boots on the ground and plenty of them. That is the answer and he has been begging the feds for that very thing for years. This is what shows me he will be serious about illegal immigration at the fed level and will enforce fed law.

Next93 (Diary) Saturday, October 8th at 1:13AM EDT (link)Oh, lord, here we go. Do I have his exact words? No. Therefore my criticism must be wrong.
I’m not going to go back and re-watch the whole debate just to get his exact quote. I watched it the first time and I know that he stood there and scolded everyone on the stage, and by extension everyone who opposes a state-level Dream act, because we need to show more compassion. If you’re going to try to re-parse what he said in order to claim he didn’t do that, then I’m not the one in this discussion who’s lying.
Oh, and then he went on to piously invoke the memory of a dead woman that he talked to AFTER he signed a pay-for-play deal with a major drug company.
I don’t really mind the fact that he’s apparently a pompous jerk. What I object to is the very democrat-like notion that being compassionate with other people’s money makes you morally superior. Eight years of a Republican being compassionate with our tax money is quite enough, thank you. And that not even beginning to cover the lifetime of Texas-style politics that brought about that Merk deal.

Heck if I know.
Next93 (Diary) Saturday, October 8th at 1:48AM EDT (link)I’d vote for one of Johnson’s neighbor’s dogs (the ones who know about “shovel ready”) before I’d vote for Romney.
I’m growing less enchanted with Perry (and the big-hat Texans here aren’t exactly swinging my opinion around).
I think I can get behind Cain, but I’m concerned with his complete lack of experience in elected office; I accept that he certainly knows more about economics and creating jobs than anyone in the current administration, but I don’t know if his success as a businessman would translate into an effective President. I also need to know his position on abortion (the only “social issue” I really care about).
Bachman’s pretty much jumped the shark, which is something of a relief becaused I like her politics, I think she’s sharp and capable, but don’t think she’d be able to win the general. She has too much of a tendancy to shoot off her mouth before engaging her brain.
I need to do more research on Santorum.
I share a lot of Ron Paul’s political positions, but he’s pretty much over the top on a lot of things, and in any case I don’t see him as electable.
I think Gingrich is brilliant, but I’m concerned about his apparent inability to stay on-task or to control his personal life. I’m also troubled by his attempt at “green conservatism”; I need to know if he’s going to reign in the EPA, kill off all of the “green economy” nonsense, and block any attempt at a cap-and-trade bill.
I actually liked Johnson in the debate, need to do some more research, but I like the idea that he’s a self-made man and that he’s a financial conservative (did you hear that he plans to pass a balanced budget ammendment?). I’d like him even better if he’d also said he wants to cap the Federal Budget and immediately cut spending.

I will say 1 thing in Romney's defense:
Raven (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 5:50PM EDT (link)In PA, we thought we were electing a squishy RINO to the Governor’s office and a hardline Senate to keep him in check.
Lo and behold, it turned out to be the other way around.
Does that mean I think this is the case with Romney? No. Only that it Is entirely possible.

I've issued a challenge and I have yet to find any takers concerning Mitt Romney
AceInTX (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 6:27PM EDT (link)Can ANYONE name ANY policy for A to Z that Mitt Romney can’t be found to have argued both sides of? I’ve wracked my brain trying to find one and I can’t.
The closest issue I can come up with is on Obamney Care. What a place to stake a claim to consistency aye? But even on that issue…though he’s now on the same side he was when he foisted it on the people of Massachusetts he spent most of the 2008 season first embracing it then repudiating it only to embrace it again…now he just says it was a great idea for Mass when the facts say different…but it’s not right for the nation…and though he promises a waiver to states for it’s mandates…his plan is to “mend it don’t end it” to quote his slick clone from AR.
He’s flip flopped on Cap and Trade, AGW, Abortion, and every other major issue he’s ever dealt with that I can think of…
I can’t believe we’re on our way to another 2008 where we have an establishment of ivy leaguers foisting another POS slimeball with no principles and nor core values and no way to tell what he’ll do in office on us like they did in 2008, 1996 before that, 1992 before that and in 1976 before that….and if they’d had their way we’d have lost in 1980 with GHW Bush and 2000 with McCain had we let them have their way.
I’m so sick of this I could scream….I’ve all but tuned out because I can’t stomach another minute watching these ass clowns making the same mistakes over and over again while patting each other on the back for how FXXXING brilliant they are…I mean…It would be one thing if they got screwed over and over again because the Democrats were so brilliant they had a different line of attack every time…but the simpletons we put in leadership somehow manage to take it up the keaster the same way every time and always end up with the same stupid “how the HeXX did that happen” look on their face as if they weren’t taken in and suckered by the same tired and lame plays again…
A POX ON THE LOT OF THEM!!!

aesthete (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 9:30PM EDT (link)It amazes me that Boehner, et al seem to believe that dusting off old Bush-era and Clinton impeachment era tactics and policies are going to work now, when they didn’t work back then.

Because you asked..
Remington_Steele (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 9:34PM EDT (link)Stem cell research. Now you can say you have one policy. Enjoy.
yippee...has he really been consistant on it?
AceInTX (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 9:53PM EDT (link)Guess the political winds haven’t shifted all that much on it huh?
Beg to differ, Remington.
gekster (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 10:04PM EDT (link)from:
http://2012.presidential-candidates.org/Romney/Stem-Cell.php
• His ideas on stem cell research have developed in the last few years. When contesting for the post of governor in 2002, he approved of embryonic stem cell research in a broad sense.
and from:
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/02/20/2008-romney-defends-stem-cell-stance/
In an interview with The Associated Press, Mitt Romney defended his opposition to embryonic stem cell research despite the fact that his wife suffers from multiple sclerosis,
They say Republicans are for the rich, Democrats are for the poor.
If they need more voters,
then they have to make more of who they are for.

wait...it seems he has prevericated on Human Stem Cell research as well
AceInTX (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 10:05PM EDT (link)So, if Wikipedia is to be believed, he was for Federal funding for Human Stem Cell research when he lobbied GW Bush to fund said research as governor but is now opposed to federal funding for stem cell research.
Flip…the Flop
Nice try though….I almost bought it….I keep thinking there has to be one issue he’s been firm on….somewhere
Ok now, we are for people flipping from liberal to conservative, which Mitt
Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 10:34PM EDT (link)has done. I’m not aware of any flops back to liberal on an issue. Do I trust his instincts on big government? No. But I would trust his word if he can be pinned down to make pledges.
As of now, I lean to Cain and Perry over Mitt.

AceInTX (Diary) Saturday, October 8th at 1:49AM EDT (link)I’m not afraid of him because he was a Dem who converted…But C’mon Mike, you know hes been back and forth at least twice that I know of about AGW, I don’t believe his many incarnations are genuine…everything I see about the man screams fraud, phoney and opportunist who’ll say anything to get elected.
I believe him to be an ivy league statist and a left of center Republican and I loath him almost to the same degree I do McCain…
I just can’t believe we’re going to nominate this guy….I refuse to believe it.
How about gay marriage and 2nd ammendment
OregonConservative (Diary) Saturday, October 8th at 2:54AM EDT (link)Can you find me a direct quote where Romney has specifically said that he’s in favor of or supports gay marriage? Just because he has (and still) believes that gays/lesbians should be treated equally in the workplace and in housing, doesn’t mean he ever supported gay marriage.
Also, has he changed his position on assault weapons? Can you find me a direct quote where he has said that he is now against an assault weapons ban? People, like me, can support the 2nd Amendment without always lining up with the NRA. For example, I think most people would agree that 2nd Amendment does not entitle people to possess nuclear weapons. . . so there is a line that is drawn somewhere in terms of the right to bear arms. Romney chose that line to be at assault weapons; I have not been able to find that he has changed from that position.
If you look into each issue closely, looking at both sides of the argument, and not just immediately assume that Romney has changed position, you will find that there are actually several positions that Romney has been consistent on. . . but these two will suffice for now.
These search and destroy tactics the same as Romney deployed in 2008 and got us McCain
AceInTX (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 8:30PM EDT (link)Romney kept trying to appeal to voters in o8 and was told no thanks so he spent his millions trashing every candidate who showed any signs of life…one week the target would be Rudy, the next Huckabee, then Fred….he smashed every candidate in the field with his negative crap and still couldn’t close the deal
easy reason for that
streiff (Diary) Saturday, October 8th at 7:17AM EDT (link)Romney can’t win so long as there is a vaguely conservative candidate left standing. His only hope is winnow the primary field down to him and Ron Paul. Otherwise he loses.

Romney is dishonest.
jjhlh1 Friday, October 7th at 8:58PM EDT (link)And untrustworthy. He even lied during the last debate by saying he didn’t change the wording in his book between the hardcover and paperback. He must think we aren’t very smart, or aren’t paying attention. I have news for him – we are.
Thank you for documenting Romney's past
uncmike Friday, October 7th at 9:05PM EDT (link)and his continuing progressive philosophy. This guy is unfit to be called a Republican after what he has advocated in the past, much less to cast stones at Perry. Romney and his staff are professional prevaricators.
Unfortunately the same media that refused to vet Obama
Scope (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 9:23PM EDT (link)and now including far too many on the right, refuse to honestly vet Romney’s records either. Romney is being elevated to the same level that Obama was. Apparently far to many on the right are willing to be led like sheep to the slaughter with Romney, just as we were with Obama. Hey, he has good hair, and he is a polished liar, again, just like Obama.
In this time when we could abandon the teleprompter president, too many are willing to continue the charade, of false profits in DC.
This information will totally kill Romney.
joayn (Diary) Friday, October 7th at 9:13PM EDT (link)Fingers crossed. Hope Perry’s been doing some Rocky training ’cause the next debate’s going to be hot, hot, hot. Can’t wait to see Romney try to walk this back.

If Obama is re-elected
capitalistpig Saturday, October 8th at 4:38AM EDT (link)Pray for a GOP Controlled House and Senate. He will be nothing but a Christmas Ornament for the next 4 years.
We need to do more than pray
tommyfrisco Saturday, October 8th at 3:23PM EDT (link)for a GOP controlled Congress. We need to work hard to make it happen. We need to ignore who the MSM, the GOP party elites, and most of our conservative pundits have to say about who is more likely to beat Obama. Liberals have a tendency to not show up to vote in the mid-terms, but they will be out in full force in 2012. We need to work harder than they will to get our candidates elected.
BTW: why do the “experts” always talk about Perry losing conservative votes, but they never talk about him being able to pick up the independent voters? Also, Perry is not 100% conservative, but he is certainly more conservative than Romney so I don’t understand why conservatives, like Cain, would prefer Romney as a candidate.
