Obama Campaign: That Mitt Romney Comes From A Strange Family

Dispatches from the Meme Wars. Part II.

Last week we pointed out the Obama re-election strategy of criticizing his wealth and religion.

After two false starts, one castigating Ann Romney for her decision to be a stay at home Mom — part of their War on Women theme — and another calling into question the reason there is a dog in the White House, one would think that the White House might try to refine their strategy a bit. But the White House is nothing if not consistent.

On Friday they dispatched the hapless Governor Brian Schweitzer (D-MT) to The Daily Beast reprise the War on Women attack and to criticize Romney’s religion.

While discussing swing states, Schweitzer said Romney would have a “tall order to position Hispanics to vote for him,” and I replied that was mildly ironic since Mitt’s father was born in Mexico, giving the clan a nominal claim to being Hispanic. Schweitzer replied that it is “kinda ironic given that his family came from a polygamy commune in Mexico, but then he’d have to talk about his family coming from a polygamy commune in Mexico, given the gender discrepancy.” Women, he said, are “not great fans of polygamy, 86 percent were not great fans of polygamy. I am not alleging by any stretch that Romney is a polygamist and approves of [the] polygamy lifestyle, but his father was born into [a] polygamy commune in Mexico.”

This attack is hilariously wrong on many levels.

First, it is Obama, not Mitt Romney, who has a problem with women. This shouldn’t be surprising. Obama is the candidate who has singlehandedly devastated the female workforce in this country. Of the 740K jobs lost since Obama took office, 683K were held by women. This is a number that even the simpleton Glenn Kessler can’t argue with and is reduced to calling it “true but false.”

Saying that Romney’s father “came from a polygamy commune in Mexico” makes about as much sense as saying that Schweitzer comes from a state where “the men are men and the sheep are nervous.” It is perhaps amusing, but at least in the case of Romney’s father, irrelevant as Mitt Romney’s grandfather who moved to Mexico was not polygamous.

Even though at a point in his genealogy Mitt Romney can find a polygamist, it is hard to see how this would hurt Romney with women voters considering Barack Obama’s father was a run of the mill bigamist descended from a line of polygamist and wife-beaters.

The line of polygamists in Obama’s family can be traced back generations in western Kenya, where it was an accepted practice within the Luo (pronounced LOO-oh) tribe. His great-grandfather, Obama Opiyo, had five wives, including two who were sisters. His grandfather, Hussein Onyango, had at least four wives, one of whom, Akumu, gave birth to the president’s father, Barack Obama, before fleeing her abusive husband. Obama Sr. was already married when he left Kenya to study at the University of Hawaii, where he married again. His American wife-to-be, Stanley Ann Dunham, was not yet 18 and unaware of his marital situation when she became pregnant with his namesake son in 1961.

It is difficult to see how this line of attack has helped the Obama campaign. Even though the Washington Post’s Aaron Blake thinks Schweitzer’s statement was major hit on Romney:

But despite Schweitzer’s overly blunt and inartful phrasing, it’s worth looking at the broader point he was trying to make.

The truth is that Romney should be able to draw on his personal history for ammunition to fight back on issues such as the Latino vote and his image as a fat-cat businessman. But in both cases, fighting back would require reminding people that he’s a Mormon.

(Gee, Aaron, in most circles this is technically called “bigotry.” It is a “gutsy call” on your part to admit what you are.)

The fact that this attack hasn’t resurfaced is an indication that it didn’t get the desired effect.

A free bit of advice to you Democrats. If you are going to try to portray your political opponent as some variety of “the other” you need to make sure that your own candidate didn’t register for school as a muslim and hasn’t bragged about eating dog. If you are going to criticize a man because his great-grandfather observed a now-discarded marital practice with a long history make sure your guy isn’t the by-blow of a bigamist marriage and make sure your party isn’t the one pushing to make the rather bizarre practice of homosexual marriage normative.

No-one really cares what someone’s triple great grandfather did. Maybe if his great grandfather was a Grand Dragon or something that would be significant. Chris Matthew’s head would explode at that point.

…where they used to execute people for alleged witchcraft.

I don’t remember any conservatives trying to use that against Ted Kennedy though.

      • streiff

but his ancestors were swilling poteen in some godforsaken bog during the Salem witchcraft trials.

        • naraht

The direct line through the fathers goes back to Ireland in the 1840s. I can’t find any of Teddy’s ancestors who came to the US from anywhere other than Ireland.

Attacks from the womans side: it is so currupt in society today this is latin America you know im the last latin American born. The trouble with woman today is they think it is okay to have a womans prison it is specially called penittentiary prison yes and spelled with two t s for a reason. I felt completly ridiculed today not only cause a senate congressman today came out talking about indians rights you know the one from new mexico, The first news I got about the first womans prison was they were going to just kill em all.

So congressman talking about domestic abuse. I’ll have to say women deserve what they get. It is a domestic society being that it is man and top hat domestic being dominion. Hate to see you try to send a woman to the dungeon or omen wink.

        • tritopic

first why is hannibal lectors name spelled with two ns? Its so that man did not forget how to spell penitentary. The pennitentiary is also known as a play yard and get it straight I just finnished the first and only one 4 months ago ended up putting a marine to the death penalty in haven wick.

So religion over politics remember the girl in Italy that killed her roommate it brought hell back to America. And the dungeon is the only safe and legal way to negotiate the death penalty.
well somebody ruled that she get her head taken off in the dungeon. ya know what happened Im stuck with her. psssst

In India it is known as a taboo for their to be twins so this woman named now an illegal alien known as barbara sue reifsnider gave birth to twins I got the bracelets both with the same name and now in the same body so her head got cut off first and nobody believes me when I tell them barbara sue is an illegal alien I have written the fbi cia and told wyandotte cops nobody will do anything I say she extincted the dinosaurs by going the wrong direction. But see when the two girls didn’t loose their head it became an American reaction to take both their heads the undertaker acted. But still in the ghost body “false prophecies”. When a woman gives birth to twins there one twin is beheaded.

But it is against America to behead a woman trust me I know.

Everything you’ve posted has been incoherent. But this one was quite understandable. Ron Paul supporters are not welcome here…

  • gwalt

Is Obama Jr the product/descendant of incest?

If his great grandfather married his two sisters, then did one of them produce Brock’s grandfather and then father?

    That would explain a lot.

    • annie54

talks about how his undershorts have the same brownish color as the undershorts have of a man whom he respects and loves. What was he trying to tell the public with that statement?

  • brianr

describing Brian Schweitzer in this debacle- he seemed completely clueless trying to explain this to Anderson Cooper last night.

    • rabun1016

Perfect phrasing. Keep his name in mind. The buffoon showed up on Squawkbox this morning and they are obviously trying to build some credibility with the bozo.

I think it’s a great strategy for them to employ!

The only thing that could be better is if the handlers realize how stupid this is, fire everyone involved and hire stupider people to replace them…

  • garfieldjl

I mean seriously, these attacks are flat out pathetic, makes me wonder if he turned his advertising campaign over to a pair of chimpanzees. If he has great, but right now these attacks are just plain ridiculous, and I have a tough time believing that David Axelrod is coming up with these laughable ads, unless they are trying to lull us into a false sense of security.

    • annie54

      background again!

I have studied and researched Obama since 2007 before certain articles were deleted immediately. I have three 3″ binders of printed information on him. It’s unbelievable that he has been able to remain “unknown”.

I like to purchase old, used books through Barnes & Noble that haven’t been changed; for example, the hard bound “Malcolm X The FBI Report” , which has a “Harvard College” library card pocket inside (ISBN 0-88184-758-5) It doesn’t take a Philadelphia Lawyer to figure this stuff out, but yet, Obama has the audacity to talk about Romney’s family?

      • APA Guy

That continuing message along with cutting taxes, wasteful government spending and high gas prices should be enough to bury Obama. Rev. Wright didn’t work the first time around and I suspect similar attacks won’t work this time either.

  • http://conservativemormonmom.blogspot.com ew88

You know the left is desperate when they rely on ‘facts’ like these. You can count on the left to make the Mormons as much of an issue as possible even though religion isn’t important beyond how it shapes character. They’re going to attack ‘fringe’ aspects of the LDS Church like polygamy and try their darnedest to make voters uncomfortable with Romney. They are going to avoid the core of Mormonism which is to follow Jesus Christ. That would be too unifying and reassuring!
If you have any questions about Mormons during this campaign, consider using mormon.org and mormonnewsroom.org for fact-checking or for your own enlightenment. Thanks for listening.

Progressives should be glad Conservatives are so unjudgemental.
Why would we ever bring up his forebear’s pecadillos…?

On the other hand, this counterpoint stuff seems to getting easier as time goes by.

This is little more than left wing political bigotry on display. The Obamacrats have taken racial bigotry of the past and changed blacks to conservatives, and pretty much kept the rest.

They routinely try to make conservatives out as weird, (as if Obama’s parents were ‘normal’), stupid, ignorant, lazy, unable to take care of themselves, and more.

RINOs are typically happy with the left’s political bigotry because conservatives are a threat to them too.

Mentioning the left wing’s political bigotry is verbotten in part because it’s sold by the Obamacrats as part of their racial herding of blacks against conservatives of any color. If the typical black were aware of how political bigotry and racial bigotry were basically the same, they might not be so willing to partake of it.

Any journolist that raises Mitt Romney’s Mormonism as an issue should be prepared to answer exactly why the subject never came during the last six years with a Mormon as the Senate Majority Leader?

    • macbookben

      Democrat x Mormon = OK

Republican x Mormon = NOT OK

      Pretty much any variable multiplied
with the coefficient “Republican” = NOT OK in the new math of the MSM.

liberation theology in which the individual is more important than God, and the state is more important than the individual.

Religion is a tool of the state to preach “fairness”. “collective salvation”, and political correctness.

  • naraht

It was Romney’s Great Grandfather (Miles Park Romney), not Grandfather who was a Polygamist. Harry Reid, OTOH is a convert to Mormonism, so no polygamous Ancestors.

The surveys indicate that the percentage of Republicans, Democrats and Independents who are less likely to vote for an LDS for president are about the same (mid 20%)

I’d say that the fact that they had *severely* different relationships with their fathers is part of the difference. IMO, Mitt Romney considers the path that his father took to be a model and a guide and only today in 2012, is he going beyond where is father did. Obama, OTOH, has no interest in following his father’s path. I truly wonder who Barack Obama II would consider to be a better model, George Romney or Barack Obama, Sr.

I don’t believe that Mitt Romney has *ever* mentioned where his father was born as part of the discussion on immigration.

Liberals like I mean love to cry racial bigotry at every chance they get. So I ask, Why are they pulling the religion card out and playing it so hard? Could it be that they are showing their true bigotted colors?
I love the way that O does not stoop to such levels as racial or religious bigotry. I love the way that he has his minions do it for him. He did it last campaign and like a bad habit he will do it again, and again and again.

  • spolson

that the Liberals seem to think I should be more concerned about what Romney does with his money than what Obama does with my money.

    • gekster

      That is a good one.

  • arthurjake

is Romney will have a tougher time selling anything. They can bash him about polygamist ancestors all they want to without much fear of Obama’s family tree coming to light. Obama will have a lot more money and the media to help him. That is just not on the polygamy thing but on everything. There are only two things really helping Romney now and that is a crap economy and Obama and friends completely sticking there feet in there mouths. The economy they will spin and eventually they will find a line of attack that doesn’t offend at least half of the voting block at any given time.

  • Seedyrom

know Obama’s history yet Romney is open game for things that happened before he was born. How small minded and silly for them not to know while thinking they can rant lunacy and lies. Stupid people will take the bait which is over half their party. The other half wanted Hillary.

  • rightlane1111

I am always wondering what trick this guy has up his sleeves. Received a couple of notifications from facebook today wherein the bloggers were agreeing with me…and those bloggers were Black. Do you think that maybe Obama is having some trouble in that area and has to create some giant diversion wherein…everyone steps in it talking about Obama Sr’s three wives and the culture in Kenya…making it a Black on White issue. Romney and his religion was just a shill to get the conversation going.

Then we are open to listening to how everyone is piling on poor ole Barack concerning practices in his homeland. Of course…if that opens up….so does the issue mentioned by Streiff…wherein he is documented as a Muslim when living in Indonesia. What follows….the birther issue and nobody is paying attention to his Executive Orders screwing the people to the wall.

The First Amendment issue on abortion wound up being about Women’s Rights and Contraception. Big leap…but can anyone see this one going to a place where poor Barack, abandoned by his father…is now accused of their sins. I CAN

That in the same document in which Obama registers for school as a Muslim he also proclaims himself a Citizen of Indonesia. Which raises the lawyer’s favorite question: was he lying then, or is he lying now?
