Barack Obama: A Legend In His Own Mind

In terms of iconography this photo is destined to rival that taken of FDR on D-Day.*

With some trying to turn bin Laden’s death into a campaign talking point for Obama’s reelection, it is useful to remember that the trail to bin Laden started in a CIA black site — all of which Obama ordered closed, forever, on the second full day of his administration — and stemmed from information obtained from hardened terrorists who agreed to tell us some (but not all) of what they knew after undergoing harsh but legal interrogation methods. Obama banned those methods on Jan. 22, 2009.

Jose A. Rodriguez

The Washington Post, The path to bin Laden’s death didn’t start with Obama

Any doubt that Barack Obama is a small, petty, and inconsequential human was dispelled last week when his campaign released an ad claiming credit for the killing of Osama bin Laden,  portraying the decision to order a raid to do something to bin Laden (we aren’t quite sure what his intent was based on the directive issued by the White House) as some kind of watershed moment in American history. As was noted then, the video is notable for being narrated by the guy who allowed bin Laden to rise to prominence and insinuating that Mitt Romney would not have ordered the raid.

Undeterred by the criticism received, even by the likes of Arianna Huffington, Obama decided to double down in a press conference yesterday:

Continued the president, “I said that I’d go after bin Laden if we had a clear shot at him and I did. If there are others who have said one thing and now suggest they’d do something else, then I’d go ahead and let them explain it.”

The article then helpfully points out some context for Romney’s statement.

Romney, incidentally, was hardly the only politician taking issue with then-Senator Obama’s comments about Pakistan. Then-Senator Hillary Clinton, D-NY, called the remarks “irresponsible and frankly naive” in an interview with Iowa’s Quad City Times, and then-Senator Joe Biden, D-Del., said “the last thing you want to do is telegraph to the folks in Pakistan that we are about to violate their sovereignty.”

So, presumably, the Secretary of State and Vice President have been called to account for their opinions as well.

Unfortunately, Obama using the accomplishments of the U.S. military for personal political gain seems to be part of his make up. When Navy SEAL snipers whacked three hapless part-time Somali pirates, Obama was, according to his fluffers, there on the quarterdeck picking out the targets. The new ad could lead you to believe that he personally fast-roped into the Abbottabad compound and killed bin Laden for all the mention that is made of the men who actually did the job. (Former Attorney General Michael Mukasey, writing in today’s Wall Street Journal, describes how other presidents have handled similar situations.)

The fact is that Mitt Romney was right, even Jimmy Carter would have made this call. In fact, Jimmy Carter made a much tougher call during Operation EAGLE CLAW. Or as one former Navy SEAL told the Daily Mail:

“The decision was a no brainer. I applaud him for making it but I would not overly pat myself on the back for making the right call. I think every president would have done the same.”

And despite bin Laden enabler Bill Clinton’s statements, there was no political downside risk for Obama whatsoever. Jimmy Carter actually got a 4 point bump in his approval rating, though admittedly a short-lived bump, in the aftermath of the disastrous raid into Iran. Had the compound been empty, Obama would still have gained some credit for continuing the pursuit.

So now we have the sorry spectacle of the President of the United States, as our economy and international prestige circle the crapper, reduced to basing his reelection hopes on the death of a strategically irrelevant fugitive in Pakistan. A man so small that he can’t be bothered to mention the skill of our troops or intelligence agencies in his orgy of self-congratulation.

“Any doubt that Barack Obama is a small, petty, and inconsequential human…”

The effort to employ Bill Clinton, who was too busy with interns to get Bin Ladin when he had the chance, is a complete joke, and tells us all how low Obama and his minions will go to try and retain power. Obama has completely trashed the high office of President of the United States for the most base purposes.

  • Jack_Savage

Ask anyone in the country who in that picture looks like the leader, and Obama will be the last person they pick. Ask any person in the country who in that picture looks like the intern who just got the adults coffee and then grabbed an empty seat with his little jacket on, and Obama would be the first one they picked.

…..I’d like to see some great graphics superimposed over the papers displayed in front of Hillary Clinton. Maybe a good caption of what she might be mumbling under her breath.

I love that quote and that moment – one of the most moving lines in film imo.

If Romney’s mischaracterized statement on Bin Laden is intended to make him look weak, then Obama should demand Biden’s resignation, since he is even more so not fit to be the president

Romneys campaign were to publish the same tweet with the photo of Captain Zero biting his fist.

Why would he be sitting in the back corner with no lap top? He?s not much of a human when it comes to size but the scale here to my eyes is still all wrong. As was mentioned, he is not looking at the what the others are looking at. I should think a person with his ego would be sitting in a prominent position in the room which I believe someone said is not the situation room. Looks like the General has his chair. Anyway, he wouldn?t sit where he couldn?t put his feet up on the table and show everyone the soles of his shoes ? you know, the muslim thing. The whole thing is a put up deal befitting the loony chump.

OTOH, of course if they had photo-shopped Obama into the picture, they would presumably have put him in a suit and tie (like everyone else) and not in his golf clothes. Hmmm…..

This is so powerful I hope you will not consider this a threadjack streiff. It certainly speaks to little o’s leadership.

  • flguy

“Any doubt that Barack Obama is a small, petty, and inconsequential human was dispelled” . . . by this very photograph, showing him sitting in a corner, hunched over, while the real players sit at the table doing the real work. This photo makes it look like Obama just walked into the room while the raid was already in progress just to see what was going on, rather than showing him looking like any kind of leader. I won’t make too much of this, just my first impression upon seeing this photo again today.

  • Xasteius

Or Michelle ban that in the situation room?

    • ww2nd95

When I look at that picture, I think the same thing.

Give him his day in the sun. The fact is, bin Laden is dead. It would have happened had John McCain been president and none of us would have minded if McCain claimed credit. Hell, Bush was claiming credit for getting Saddam Hussein!

Obama isn’t going to have much to cheer about as gas prices rise straight through the summer. This whole issue would be over if Romney would just let it go. But the more he brings it up, the more people think they don’t know what Romney would have done. Move on.

    • Justin_Case

You are assuming that McCain would be as desperate as Obama, who, at present, does not have much on which to hang his hat.

McCain was enticed to abandon other POWs in North Vietnam because he was well connected. He chose not to. This demonstrates that he possesses sound judgment.

Had McCain been Commander In Chief, he would have assigned any credit to the Navy Seals.

People who have served in the military are sensitive to “ticket punchers” like Obama, who can’t even pronounce words like “Corpsman”.

Romney does not have to abandon this issue as it shows Obama as he really is.

      • jlsankot

as I recall, Bush didn’t say “I got ‘em”. He said “We got ‘em”.

      • northeastred

If you recall, he was constantly saying during the campaign, “I know how to get bin Laden.” Presumably, he wasn’t going to share his knowledge with the Bush administration. He was saving it for himself, I suppose. Or perhaps, once he lost, he shared his secrets with Obama and wanted no credit. If that’s the case, I respect him immensely.

I just think this whole bin Laden thing needs to go away. All it does is remind people that bin Laden was killed, and that Obama has been attacking terrorists in Pakistan–something the GOP candidates ridiculed him for. If anything, the GOP should question how much more killing Obama plans to be doing in Pakistan. Sure, the administration has been decimating al Qaeda, but at what cost? It seems like every other week there are innocents killed in drone bombings hitting the wrong targets. Maybe it’s time to stand up for human life and portray Obama as a cold, heartless commander in chief. Because that is how he’s viewed in So. Waziristan and other tribal areas of Pakistan.

        • Jack_Savage

“It seems like every other week there are innocents killed in drone bombings hitting the wrong targets.”

John Brennan begs to differ, as does anyone paying attention.

“Maybe it?s time to stand up for human life and portray Obama as a cold, heartless commander in chief. Because that is how he?s viewed in So. Waziristan and other tribal areas of Pakistan.”

Maybe you could get your connections in Pakistan to post here and clear the matter up.

  • Justin_Case

why didn’t the Left protest the possibility that the sovereignty of Pakistan would be violated?

The 1970 invasion of Cambodia, for much the same reasons that we are operating in Pakistan today, led to the bloody riots at Kent State.

Where are the voices of the anti-war movement?

The fact of having intel saying OBL was at a known site and staying put would have gotten out. With so many people involved, it would have leaked, and OBL would have been on the run again with another page added to his legend.
Hillary’s darling hubby let the guy go once, and is still getting grief over it. Bam-Bam had to be looking at what would be said in the future if he refused to give the “Go” order.

B Obama is a sick man along with being a small man. He has grandiose ideas of who he is and what he can accomplish. America gave him AND his wife all the opportunities possible to succeed and now he wants to destroy the hand that fed him. He believes in “the end justifies the means” which is certainly not a Christian belief. Let the small people fall by the wayside, he can’t be bothered. To Obama, everyone is “small” except for himself and his family. America is expendable.

Captain Zero!! is thinking/saying, durng this occurance:
    1)”Where’s Bo, anyway….”
2)”Indonesia was so much nicer, all that jungle and wildlife…”
    3) “Gee, I miss Chicago. Everyone I knew, liked me there…..”
    4) “What ARE those long things those guys in the uniforms are holding…?”
    5) “Anybody got a Marlboro…?”
    6) “Who’s my golf partner tomorrow…?”

and that he’s a “legend in his own mind” [only], but the UN-READ vote, also. And there are a lot more of them than there are of us. Seein’ and hearin’ is believin’ to them.

From the1920s “don`t believe a thing you read or half of what you see.In the papers every day, this is what the headlines say”Dancing girls are darn good cooks, thats a lot of bunk. Politicians are not crooks, that is also bunk.” They had it right then, I pray we get it right now!! I don`t believe a word that comes out of this mans(quesionable) mouth .this country has become a nation of Jonestown kool-aid drinkers, led by the biggest push from behind, behind we`ve ever had in the WH. He would probably take credit for cleaning up after the dog Bo if it got him one more vote.

It is clear that hatred for the President is impairing some memories here. President Bush (W) (a name not spoken here) made is very clear that killing OBL was not a priority – in fact he dismantled parts of the intelligence community targeted toward that goal. So “anyone would have made that call” is false – the very President during 9/11 DIDN’T make that call – generally or when we were on it in Tora Bora. Would Romney or McCain have rededicated assets to getting OBL – we’ll never know (but both of them did criticize Candidate Obama for saying he would).

More importantly, the operation itself did not arise in a vacuum (everyone seems to act like they would have made the call in the same circumstance without considering how the circumstance came to be). The decision to make killing OBL a priority came from President Obama when he came into office. That order set in motion the assets necessary to achieve the goal. Would it have happened in a third term with W – highly unlikely. The decision to proceed with the raid despite questionable intelligence was also made by President Obama. He is due more than a little credit here. Hatred is everyone’s right, but it should not replace facts with dribble about a picture.

Should he take credit without also providing credit to the military and intelligence communities? Hell no. But please do not ignore the very important role the President did have in the death of OBL.

    • Justin_Case

Anyone who has served and has slept in a hole he dug after humping the boonies all day is familiar with an upper echelon person taking credit for something that was made possible by the guy doing the REAL DIRTY WORK-the guy in the field.

Obama “made the decision”. BF Deal.

I’m glad bin Laden is fish food. But, you will never convince me Obama deserves much more than a small fraction of the credit. The overwhelming majority, say 98%, goes to those brave souls who laid it on the line that night.

That is why those who have actually fought and served are so disgusted with this clown. We know what it is like to put aside our fear and be able to fight.

That we are even discussing Obama somehow being this great big hero is well deserving of ridicule and disbelief.

  • garylyn

Not only did American citizens have doubts about where Obama’s sympathies would lead him, but apparently so did our military and political leaders. Even Obama had doubts about Obama. Why else would Obama be shouting loudly that he actually did the patriotic and American thing? That Obama would do the courageous thing and make the right decision is apparently too much for anyone to believe. So we are reminded again. 24×7, wall to wall. The effort points to a lot of doubt to dispatch.
