That Donald Trump presides over the most hilariously (well, it would be were they not in danger of getting the nuclear codes) campaign teams in the history of US politics (for instance, here | here | here) is not a secret. When you look at the crooks, cretins and misfits that he’s brought together it is stereotypical of a third rate intellect who doesn’t like to be challenged. This is not unknown to Trump. He admitted to Reince Priebus that his people really weren’t up to the task of managing the delegate selection process.

Now there is more fuel for the fire.

While this is couched in terms of blaming the media, what Trump is actually acknowledging is that there is really no one in his campaign who knows what in the the hell is going on. Some, a lot, actually, is just boneheaded stupidity. Anytime Ben Carson, Corey Lewandowski, Paul Manafort, or anyone associated with campaign communications opens their yap you can be sure something really stupid is going to be said. Beyond that there is the ongoing civil war in the campaign and people lie about who is doing what to make themselves look better or others look worse… as though that was actually possible.

Logically, there is no reason for a media that would maliciously misquote his staff to not do the same to him. It isn’t like he’s respected, admired, or even feared by the press. In fact, if the media were that duplicitous they could make much more hay out of misquoting Trump, himself, rather than some underling. The real issue is that Trump’s staff is more of an embarrassment than Trump and the only way Trump can staunch the stupid is to discredit anything they say in advance by blaming the media.

Trump understands that he is running his campaign with a staff of mediocrities because that is all he really wants or needs at this point. Unfortunately, if Trump actually wins you have to expect he’s going to attract the same C-level talent to the cabinet agencies as he has attracted to his business and his campaign.
