NY Daily News Reporter .@GershKuntzman Lies About the AR-15

An alleged reporter for the NY Daily News has a story today on his experience firing the AR-15. It is titled What is it like to fire an AR-15? It’s horrifying, dangerous and very very loud.

If you have served in the armed forces you will need to change your pants because I’m sure you’ve peed yourself by now.

If you aren’t familiar with it, the AR-15 is the bogeyman of the anti-gun movement. It is black. It is scary looking. It is, essentially, a civilian version of the venerable M-16. It fires a NATO 5.56x45mm cartridge, which, more or less, is the Remington .223. It fires only in semi-automatic mode, meaning that each time you pull the trigger you fire one round. Firing as fast as you can you might be able to fire three rounds per second.

So hold on and get ready for the most bizarre bit of fantasy to ever not be in The Onion.

It feels like a bazooka — and sounds like a cannon.

I’ve shot pistols before, but never something like an AR-15. Squeeze lightly on the trigger and the resulting explosion of firepower is humbling and deafening (even with ear protection).

The recoil bruised my shoulder. The brass shell casings disoriented me as they flew past my face. The smell of sulfur and destruction made me sick. The explosions — loud like a bomb — gave me a temporary case of PTSD. For at least an hour after firing the gun just a few times, I was anxious and irritable.

Even in semi-automatic mode, it is very simple to squeeze off two dozen rounds before you even know what has happened. In fully automatic mode, it doesn’t take any imagination to see dozens of bodies falling in front of your barrel.

It is a safe bet Kuntzman has never fired a “bazooka.” A “bazooka”, or 3.5-inch rocket laucher, beels pretty much like a metal tube. Which is what it is. I don’t even know what this clown is trying to say.

So let’s look at his statements.

The AR-15 is loud.

Well, yeah, any firearm capable of killing a largish animal or a human being is going to be loud. That is why you wear ear protection. This is a decibel scale showing a lot of common noises

decibel general

If you consult one of the dozens of ballistic tables that are readily available you find the decibel level for the MILSPEC 5.56mm round is about 160db, the .223 Remington is a tad bit quieter at just north of 140db. Odds are Kuntzman as firing the .223 because it is more common.

The AR-15 is louder than pistols.

When you compare it to standard pistol cartridges you find:
decibel

The decibel level for a 5.56 round is virtually indistinguishable from the 9mm Parabellum.

The recoil from the AR-15 bruised his shoulder.

Bullsh**. Bullsh** on stilts.

It is entirely possible Kuntzman’s little girly shoulder was bruised. But with a normal human being, this is what firing the AR-15/M-16 looks like:

This is what it looks like with a normal and attractive human firing it:

The AR-15/M-16 is virtually recoil free because of a long buffer spring running the length of the stock that absorbs the recoil.

buffer

The lack of recoil was a huge factor in adopting it. It doesn’t intimidate young soldiers the way the 7.62x54mm round does (not to mention the old .30-06) and the low recoil lets you keep the rounds on target… mostly… when you use the full automatic mode.

When I was a baby second lieutenant at Fort Benning, GA, new officers had to engage in what was called “confidence training” with the M-16. One of the exercises was putting the butt of the weapon on your crotch and firing a magazine on full auto. No problem. And I have three kids.

Expended shell casings flew by his face.

Got to call bullsh** on that, too, Scooter.

The brass also did not “fly past” this clown’s face. The AR-15 is designed to throw expended brass forward and to the right of the weapon from the ejection port located on the right side of the upper receiver (see the bottom illustration).

The image he provides with his “story” demonstrates that he is a right-handed shooter, as are most of us.

liar liar

The ejection port is visible at the far RIGHT edge of the photo. His ugly mug is on the left. The expended brass will be ejected above his fingernail and fly to the right and forward.

You hate to say it, but there is no other way of putting it. This guy is totally lying about what it is like to fire an AR-15. I don’t know why anyone would take the time to actually fire the weapon and then blatantly lie about the experience other than being an agenda-driven hack.
