Two days ago, the Senate Intelligence Committee invited former FBI Director James Comey to testify next Tuesday. It was to be a closed session and, allegedly, to focus not on anything to do with Russia but rather on the facts and circumstances surrounding Comey’s unceremonious firing as seen from Comey’s perspective.

Recently ousted FBI director James Comey has been invited to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee next Tuesday, ranking member Sen. Mark Warner’s (D-Va.) office confirmed Wednesday.

It will be a closed session, meaning the public is not invited, according to a spokesperson for Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr (R-N.C.).

This evening we’ve been told, via Virginia Democrat Mark Warner, that Comey has declined the invitation. No reason was given.

Aside from the inevitable hysterics about Trump’s alleged tapes constituting obstruction of justice or some other nonsense, the most logical reason is that Comey is an adult and probably doesn’t relish being at the center of a food fight over his firing. According to the acting FBI Director, the Russia probe has the resources it needs to proceed. The two men who are actually doing the investigation, Rod Rosenstein and Dana Boente, met with senators yesterday and if they were having difficulties the story would have leaked by now.
