Scott Brown Responds to Martha Coakley’s Negative ‘Nazi’ Ad

Martha Coakley unloaded a nasty ad last night full of dark, harsh tones, lies and subliminal images, including one distorted image of Rush Limbaugh with his hand up a ‘heil’ manner.

Brown fires back with a positive ad challenging Coakley’s camp. The difference between the two ads and the two candidates couldn’t be more stark. But will it work?

Brown could have ignored it. Brown could have hit back just as hard. Or Brown could have taken this middle ground. All three options bear risks and rewards. Brown chose to confront the negative attack ads and the lies, but he stays positive.

This is your money bomb money at work, fighting a nefarious Democratic machine attack ad.

What do you think:

I like the image of Coakley with Sal Dimasi, Democratic jail bird, and Deval Patrick, unpopular Democratic governor. He also frames the debate as a debate between independents verus the “machine”. I like the tactic. The machine up here is disgusting and even Democrats are sick of it.

Brown is being way too nice

He has a lot ammo to attack her on as her days of AG. She failed to go after that priest who was molesting all kids

All corruption in that state capitol. Where has she led?

    He needs to attack her

Kill them with kindness, and all that.

As a debater, he did an excellent job. Kept it on the topic, and didn’t resort to name calling or bashing. Kept it polite, yet firm, and communicated his point very well.

SC money well spent, in MHO.

      Romans 12:19-20
Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place to wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, said the Lord. Therefore if your enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing you shall heap coals of fire on his head.

      FEEL THE BURN!!!!!

…the ad is perfect. He looks and sounds great. His kitchen is the right setting, providing the common touch (like his pickup truck), with photos stuck on the fridge, etc. His positives are already in the stratosphere so she has to go negative to whittle him down. His ad counters that strategy by emphasizing Mr. Nice Guy, all-American. It’s reassuring, attractive, feel-good stuff. Big plus for him.

      • SpL

There are plenty of people who hate Republicans and believe they are WORSE than Nazis/Hitler. So they will excuse bad behavior toward Republicans.

Whether the ad was effective will be in the results. I think Brown gets points for coming across as intelligent as well as positive, which is really important in liberal surroundings.

Coakley stated too cheerily that she approved her ad. I would conclude that the rush to pull it shows that Brown won the round.

    • katnandu

It is the weak candidate that must resort to smear campaigns. A candidate with ideas and and and the ability to debate the current issues will end up on top. People are tired of the same old tactics and can see right through them!

  • penguin2

Bright setting; he said what he needed to but in a positive way. He made his point. Yes, negative ads work because they leave false words and images in peoples’ mind, if they don’t know or seek the truth. But there comes a point where the ad is so dark and out there, that reasonable people can see it for the distortion it is.
It seems that the uniqueness of the time and place in Mass upcoming election, lends itself to going to Scott Brown, as the benefit of the doubt. The people are already surrounded by the results of the negative and failed Leftist policies, otherwise the Independents would not be polling as they are, in our favor.

    • writeblock

Positive ads can be even more effective. Remember Morning in America? Hard to demonize a guy like him–or Reagan.

Let us do a fair comparison, check the facts and you decide. I do not want to jump to conclusions without checking the facts.

Look at NSDAP, composed by Adolf Hitler and Anton Drexler, the union labor party, The Nazi Party. Well right from the start the union labor party seems to have something in common with culture of corruption Coakley.

So here is the NSDAP to look at

    http://www.hitler.org/writings/programme/

#9 All citizens shall have equal rights and duties

    Martha Coakley strikingly similar

#2 Equal Rights and Opportunity – Martha Coakley believes our democracy is based..

    http://marthacoakley.com/about/Issues/details/20

Look at NSDAP, #13 We demand the nationalization of all (corrupt) businesses which have been formed into corporations

    Martha Coakley strikingly similar

#3 Martha believes the best way to get our economy back on the right track is to tackle the economic crisis head on and to take all necessary steps – ravaged by risky investments, unfair tactics, and market uncertainties. By making bold and wise (government?) investments in health care, energy and education..

    http://marthacoakley.com/about/Issues/details/21

However, I could continue but it is up to you decide if there is any more similarity

    http://marthacoakley.com/about/Issues

But, do not stop there, take a look here for some more similarity here

    http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1848/communist-manifesto/ch01.htm

    # 2. – A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.-, right from The Communist Manifesto. Yet now we have on federal income taxes, top 5% pay 53.25% of all income taxes, the top 10% pay 64.89%, the top 25% pay 82.9%, the top 50% pay 96.03% and the bottom 50%, they pay a paltry 3.97% of all income taxes. – Tax the rich – such a typical democrat party line yet they accuse their opponents of tax cuts for the wealthy.

Then there is the political spectrum of less government on the right and more government on the left. Fascism Socialism Nazism Communism all belong on the left. Culture of corruption Coakley has made it clear that she is on the left many times. Brown has said he is less government, on the right, the opposite of culture of corruption Coakley.

Correct me if I am wrong, if status quo Coakley wants to make a comparison to Nazism it seems that, she has more in common with Nazism then Brown.

    • Repair_Man_Jack

Right about now she needs somebody to help put Hitler in context.

  • mbecker908

Yep, with a HT to Instapundit, the JammieWearingFool gets a screen shot of the Coakley ad…

If you’re having trouble reading it, the disclaimer says: “Paid for by the Massachusettes Democratic Party

    • Sundayjack

Clearly the ad is aimed toward women,

But if she wins, she will always be known to me as Senetter Martha Coakley.

  • joliefleurs

    I liked the ad.

I’m pretty sure most people in the Bay State already know about Martha’s crappy record on crime….I think he comes across as very decent and likeable, NOT business as usual. Admittedly, I’m very responsive the the decency factor.

If he wins, I’m likin’ him as a Presidential candidate at some point.

Her web site has no reference to it. Her YouTube channel lists it, but gives an error when clicking it.

The Nazi reference must not have played as well as she thought.

By the way, Brown’s response was great and was the correct way to respond.

  • http://www.neoavatara.com/blog neoavatara

that no Nazi reference is acceptable? Idiots.

I loved Brown’s demeanor last night and in that ad. I feel it was money well spent donating to him…

        • reaganiterepublicanresistance

Brown is running a two-pronged strategy, as he stated himself:

CUT TAXES and TAKE-OUT the TERRORISTS

Hey you chowderheads up there in Boston… take a serious look at these two people and tell me who really DESERVES a crack at this job. And like you sometimes elect a GOP Governor to keep the state house honest… isn’t it time for a change here?

          DO THE RIGHT THING Massachussetts…

      • writeblock

She’s fighting the last war, trying to tie him to Bush/Cheney and reaching for ways to demonize him to drag down his positives. It has the look and feel of something cheesy and fake. His upbeat nice guy ad was the perfect antidote.

Coakley in trouble? Pharma and HMO lobbyists to the rescue

Read more at the Washington Examiner: http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/blogs/beltway-confidential/Coakley-in-trouble-Pharma-and-HMO-lobbyists-to-the-rescue-81067542.html#ixzz0cPrmKAPT

With Democrat Martha Coakley in trouble in the Massachusetts special election to fill Ted Kennedy’s seat, Democrats could lose vote No. 60 for President Obama’s health-care bill. In response, an army of lobbyists for drug companies, health insurance companies, and hospitals has teamed up to throw a high-dollar Capitol Hill fundraiser for Coakley next Tuesday night.

Of the 22 names on the host committee–meaning they raised $10,000 or more for Coakley–17 are federally registered lobbyists, 15 of whom have health-care clients. Of the other five hosts, one is married to a lobbyist, one was a lobbyist in Pennsylvania, another is a lawyer at a lobbying firm, and another is a corporate CEO. Oh, and of course, there’s also the political action commitee for Boston Scientific Corporation.

Here are some of Coakley fundraiser hosts with some of their current health care clients:
Thomas Boggs, Patton Boggs: Bristol-Myers Squibb

Chuck Brain, Capitol Hill Strategies: Amgen, BIO, Merck, PhRMA

Susan Brophy, Glover Park Group: Blue Cross, Pfizer

Steven Champlin, Duberstein Group: AHIP, Novartis, Sanofi-Aventis
Licy Do Canto, Raben Group: Amgen

Gerald Cassidy, Cassidy & Associates: U. Mass Memorial Health Care

David Castagnetti, Mehlman, Vogel, Castagnetti: Abbot Labs, AHIP, Astra-Zenaca, General Electric, Humana, Merck, PhRMA.

Steven Elmendorf, Elmendorf Strategies: Medicines Company, PhRMA, United Health

Shannon Finley, Capitol Counsel: Amgen, Astra-Zeneca, Blue Cross, GE, PhRMA, Sanofi-Aventis.

Heather Podesta, Heather Podesta & Partners: Cigna, Eli Lilly, HealthSouth

Tony Podesta, Podesta Group: Amgen, GE, Merck, Novartis.
Robert Raben, Raben Group: Amgen, GE.

If Coakley pulls it out, this is the crowd that will have brought her here. If health-care reform passes, this is the crew that will have won.

This type of ad ties into Obama….Shocking!

These Health Care groups are actively lobbying to make Insurance more expensive, while the Public supports healthcare reform because insurance has become so expensive. What a racket they have going on in Washington and Wall Street (and Boston).

    • Spartan4Life

They think the Dems are for the “little guy” when they are a bought and paid for tool for Big Pharma, Big Banks, and Big Whatever that wants to keep the trough full. The Podesta family seems to be doing well for itself. These are the whores that Rachel Maddow wants to go shill for every night? Ha Ha Ha.

Someone With the Coakley Campaign Pushes Me into a Metal Railing BY JOHN MCCORMACK

        http://weeklystandard.com/blogs/video-someone-coakley-campaign-pushes-me-metal-railing

After taking a question from a CNN reporter on the street outside the restaurant, I asked her:

TWS: Attorney General Coakley, you said last night that there are no terrorists in Afghanistan–that they’re all in Yemen and Pakistan. Do you stand by that remark?

COAKLEY: I’m sorry, did someone else have a question?

GRIFF JENKINS, Fox News: I did. Why are you in Washington tonight?

COAKLEY: We planned an event after the primary that would be a unity event in Washington. We’re also in the middle of a very intense campaign [...]

After Coakley finished her answer, she began walking away from the restaurant, and I walked behind her asking why health care industry lobbyists were supporting her at the fundraiser. She didn’t reply.

        • izoneguy

The health-care industry rides to the Democratic rescue.

          http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704586504574654704100186542.html?mod=rss_opinion_main

Against overwhelming public opposition, the only things keeping ObamaCare alive at this point are power politics and the misguided corporate cease-fire that Democrats have either coerced or bought?or is homegrown at companies like Pfizer that are deeply invested in more government control of the economy. Ms. Coakley’s election would make that outcome a certainty.

This is what Congressman Paul Ryan has been talking about. Fat Cats in bed with Fat Congresscritters(That means you Barney Frank!).

I think Congressman Ryan has got it exactly right. It is a populist message that leads to Conservative solutions.

Boston Herald has a poll up asking who they think won the debate last night. As of 4:15 here are the results:

    6% – Martha Coakley

    89% – Scott Brown

    3% – Joseph Kennedy

3% – Nobody won, it was a dud
    Total Votes: 1,926

there’s something to be said about keeping it positive. We’ve had a boatload of negative this past year, and I believe Brown is showing wisdom, as he did last night.

Accentuate the positive, but keep her history up front.

    • scarlos

Meeting attack ads with ads that function both as Positive ads (emphasizing the candidate’s qualifications) and implicit negative ads by pointing out the absurdity of the attack ad.

So far it looks to be a rather effective ad strategy.

  • paint_it_red

Coakley’s ad is nothing more than a partisan appeal. The hard core Bush haters, the frothing pro-choicers, etc. That was the same approach Deeds took in VA. It appeals only to those who would vote for her anyway. The moderates and middle voters who value a positive tone, a change in politics as usual, and a focus on issues that are bread and butter are turned off by petty partisan ads such as hers.

Brown’s ad by contrast is brilliant. He doesn’t bother exclaiming what’s already in the press in his favor (Coakley’s misspelling the name of their state, his victory in the debate) nor does he try attacking her. Two negative ads in MA is a wash and the default vote goes to the Democrat. He has to go positive.

He takes the opportunity to define himself. Health care and jobs are his priorities. The images show he cares about the working man. Coakley is part of the political machine. The music is from U2, which is going to be popular in a heavily Irish town, particularly among middle age voters. He’s the bread and butter candidate talking from his own kitchen. He looks like someone you could sit down and have a beer with or the professional guy at the office you can always count on to get his job done. He paid attention to these little details where, I believe, swing voters are won on the margins. Not sure it’ll be enough in MA, but at a minimum, it starts to make conservative inroads.
