GOP Senator Joins Calls For Trump To Show His Tax Returns

President Trump incorrectly claimed in a television interview that two people were shot and killed in Chicago during then-President Barack Obama's farewell speech. Chicago police records show no one was fatally shot in the city on Jan. 10, the day of Obama's speech. There were five shootings, but none occurred while Obama was speaking. It isn’t just Democrats and liberal agitators that would like to see Trump’s tax returns.

Some Republican lawmakers feel that Trump should keep his promises and release his returns to the public, as well.

Senator James Lankford (R-Okla.) is asking that Trump just show the returns and end all the fuss.

“[Trump] promised he would,” Lankford said at a town hall Tuesday night in Claremore, Okla. when asked whether the president should share his tax returns, according to the Tulsa World.

“He should keep his promise,” he added.

Lankford’s comments follow a weekend of protests by groups who would like to see Trump release his returns.

The running theory falls into one of two camps: Either he’s not as wealthy as he claims, or some of the sources of his income could reveal some uncomfortable foreign entanglements.

Trump had promised to make his tax returns available in 2014 and 2015, but when it came time to do so, he reneged, saying he was under audit.

The IRS has said there was no reason he couldn’t reveal his taxes, but he still refuses.

To be clear, there is no rule that says presidents or candidates must show their tax returns, but Trump is the first president in 40 years who has refused. In the past, it was a show of transparency and proof that the citizens were voting for an upstanding, uncorrupted fellow American.
