Podunk Palace: Sports Journalist Stands by His Report of Trump Diss on White House

Earlier this week, we heard the news of President Trump complaining to his country club pals about the accommodations at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Alan Shipnuck, doing a story on golf, specifically, Trump’s golfing habit in this week’s Sports Illustrated, attributed a very simple, but nasty quote to the president, overheard as he entertained guests at his Bedminster, New Jersey club:

That White House is a real dump.

I suppose if you consider gold-plated, gaudy crap to be the opposite of a dump, then the genteel elegance of our nation’s presidential abode could be a bit off-putting.

The administration was quick to try and douse the outrage, by claiming that no such comments had been made.

Trump took to Twitter to say the White House was one of the most beautiful homes he’d ever seen.

Somebody isn’t telling the truth, because it can’t be both, can it?

For his part, Shipnuck is sticking to his story. He told Golf Magazine that 8 or 9 people heard the comment.

He also went on to say a spokeswoman from the White House called and demanded a retraction of that particular story.

Said Shipnuck:

“It might be inconvenient for her boss and she might wish he didn’t say it, but it’s not a lie,” he said.

“They definitely don’t waste any time trying to be charming or friendly, these people in the White House communications department,” he added.

Maybe the Mooch left a little of himself behind?

And while this is far from the worst thing to come out of this president, even for just today, it’s indicative of the elitist Manhattan attitude that makes the embrace of Donald Trump as the “every man,” all-American his supporters have deluded themselves into believing he is all the more baffling.
