Nashville Drowning: Obama’s silent, HOPE crumbles like a Coke can

UPDATE: Obama has acknowledged that he is aware of Tennessee’s existence… to Gov. Bredesen at least. Point stands – he has said nothing publicly. And the crumbling HOPE house is still a good metaphor.

This weekend, Nashville received around 10 inches of rain – a record breaking rain fall that has caused an astounding amount of flooding. The surrounding rivers swelled and as of this afternoon have yet to crest, so water continues to rush through the streets and into buildings. Thousands have lost their homes. The Opryland Hotel is holding 8-10 feet of water. Businesses have lost everything.

President Obama has yet to acknowledge that anything has even happened in Middle Tennessee… most likely because he’s in damage control mode, trying to salvage a response to the LAST disaster. Time is reporting that Gibbs addressed the emergency in today’s briefing. From George Scoville at IntelligencePlease.com:

TIME.com is reporting that White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs addressed the flood situation in Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky in his briefing this morning, and that “[the] FEMA Director [is] headed to the region today.” I’m not sure if this means Administrator Craig Fugate, or Associate Administrator for Response and Recovery Bill Carwile, or even Director Ted Monette from the Office of Federal Coordinating Officer Operations, under A/A Carwile’s office.

Obama himself still had nothing to say regarding the catastrophe. “It’s embarrassing that caring either depends on your electoral prospects or has to wait for the news cycle,” says Scoville.

To quote The One himself, let me be clear: Tennessee seems to be handling this disaster quite well. This is not a call for Federal aid to rush in and start to screw things up – it’s the symbolism attached to knowing the President of your country is aware of what your state is going through.

This footage below the fold is from Antioch,  just southeast of Nashville.

Note the “HOPE” banner on the side of the building. And note how it drifts along, holding it together for as long as possible… until it hits a snag and crumbles like a Coke can in about 7 seconds. Pretty solid illustration of the White House disaster response… and the Presidency.

In the latest census, President Obama checked african-american and did not check Caucasian also as the census instructions said he was obliged to do.

So, I guess my President is officially ashamed of my race and of me.

kyle8 and randy streu. Ethnically speaking, Obama in particular and the Democratic party have had no use for the Scotch-Irish in America, that great invisible, long suffering ethic sub-group of white folks in America. Over the past 300 years this group has contributed to America its best hillbillies, moonshiners, crack rifle shots, oh, and..more US Presidents than any other ethnic group including Andrew Jackson (full), US Grant (full), Teddy Roosevelt (half), Ronald Reagan (half), plus about 10 or so others, as well as Davey Crockett (full) and even Rosa Parks (! – half). It has been stated that the difference between Republican and Democrat electoral victories over the past 30 years, was that Lee Atwater discovered the Scotch-Irish in America & campaigned accordingly; the Democrats still don’t know that the Scotch Irish exist in America. Why this ethnic discussion? Particularly large concentrations of Scotch Irish descent are located in North Carolina, Arkansas, Texas, Missouri, Kentucky and…you guessed it, Tennessee. There is at least historical precedent for the libs’ non-recognition of this group. They only need for them to show up when some (Normandy) beach needs to be stormed, I guess.

I was back home in Nashville over the weekend, and it’s absolutely heartbreaking. I’m back in D.C., but I wish I was there with my neighbors to help in the cleanup efforts. You can help be donating to the Nashville Red Cross: http://www.nashvilleredcross.org/index.asp?IDCapitulo=78T3Z2WSK0

Matthew, I hope the Nashville Red Cross is better than its parent

klondike Tuesday, May 4th at 7:44AM EDT (link)

I experienced a flood as bad as this, and the Red Cross in my city spent millions of dollars on advertising how much they were helping the local community. Meanwhile, as soon as the flood waters receded, the Salvation Army was driving through neighborhoods giving out food, water, and Clorox. The Red Cross raised over $40 million for our flood, and not one person ever saw them except when soliciting money. I called several Red Cross offices asking for an accounting – none would respond.

Steph, you have my sympathies. I never want to experience another flood. I wish my house had just burned down (as several did after restoring electrical power) so I could just walk away. Three weeks of virtually no sleep trying to rip out carpet and sheetrock to stop the spread of mold, then trying to find an ethical contractor, then six months of restoring my home, then several years to replace furniture. You and others in that area are in my thoughts.

All the best,

klondike

The value of the Salvation Army is inestimable. Large or small issue, they are there when needed. They don’t get a lot of credit, nor do they particularly seek it. Which is why I give my donation to the Army and not the Red Cross.

More for your money with Salvation Army

klondike Tuesday, May 4th at 7:39PM EDT (link)

I could tell Red Cross vs. Salvation Army stories going back 30 years.

I will tell one that is somewhat recent. I donated money to the Salvation Army to help Katrina victims. Several months after my donation, I received a letter from the Salvation Army saying that they received more than enough donations to support their Katrina relief, so they were sending my donation to my local area.

How cool is that?

The Red Cross campaigns for funds. As you said, the Salvation Army is first responder and gets the job done.

edintexas, I completely agree

klondike Tuesday, May 4th at 7:34PM EDT (link)

The Salvation Army never seeks publicity or accolades. They just get the job done. Quietly, efficiently, and with dignity.

This is not a votable event

tngal (Diary) Monday, May 3rd at 6:25PM EDT (link)

I’m sure we’ll see Obama — if the good Lord’s willing and the creek’s don’t rise.

It does not effect any of his bills, such as cap and tax,and he doesn’t expect to garner any votes so why waste teleprompter batteries.
The flooding is immense. Not just metro Nashville which the media centers on but throughout the middle Tn from Ky down to the AL border. I’ve gone through four (rural) counties today and turned back on several of the backroads even ones with very little water them. The chirt is too slimey and some good gravel roads are washed away.

The governor has already declared us a disaster area so we don’t need a lot more from the O.

Obama will wait until the water recedes and the local gov't has everything under control.

randy streu (Diary) Monday, May 3rd at 6:34PM EDT (link)

Then he’ll come in and subtly put himself in the spotlight and take credit for the handling of the disaster.

Much like he’s doing with the BP spill: Mostly, he’s shutting up, until BP makes a statement, then just to prove he’s in charge, he says, “Yeah! Do that!” and makes references to jackbooting their throats until they do.

Not sure what you call that — I just know it ain’t leadership.

tngal (Diary) Monday, May 3rd at 6:40PM EDT (link)

Don’t mean for this to sound bitter, but given that there were shelters set up in the Nashville area and contiguous counties, as well as shelters in numeorus outlying counties I did not catch any reports of raping or shooting going on. Now, I realize the shelters were smaller than the dome in NO but still…!

If I missed a report please correct me, but so far I’m seeing nada as far as felony opportunistic endevours are concerned.

BTW, our own LP field for the Titans is flooded so we couldn’t ship anybody there anyway.

Shhh...

randy streu (Diary) Monday, May 3rd at 6:43PM EDT (link)

Keep it down, or Obama will take credit for THAT too, and contrast it to how Bush’s mishandling of Katrina caused the looting, rapes, and rooftop idiots shooting at rescue craft.

randy, here's where he will take credit

tngal (Diary) Monday, May 3rd at 7:00PM EDT (link)

The next phase is people will have to buy cars. Hundreds upon hundreds of them. Mostly new, since cash for clunkers ate up the really good used ones. Home depots will do big as hundreds upon hundreds homes have to be replaced or at the very least major repairs. The infrastructure is shot …schools need new buses, counties need new schools, roads are buckled, pipes gones, Iin other words the buying and the building will be immense so the economy will get a boost

On the plus side, maybe many of our unemployed will now be able to get construction work. ( waaaiiitt, I’m hearing a stampede of feet coming from arizona. what could that be? )

Heh.

randy streu (Diary) Monday, May 3rd at 7:09PM EDT (link)

Don’t get me wrong. I’m sure he’ll take credit there, too.

One correction...

Steph C (Diary) Monday, May 3rd at 8:24PM EDT (link)

The official amount of rainfall came in at a little over 13 inches. IIRC, it was 13.38 but I stopped caring at some point what the official total was because I had work to do.

The building in the clip happened between my exit off I24 and the next exit down. All those trucks and cars were stopped there because Bell Road was already underwater. No one expected it to become a trap but that is what happened. The concrete median in the middle is all that saved the westbound lanes for a time until the water started spilling over. On any given day, Mill Creek is nothing to look at but when you get something like that happening, it becomes a monster.

As tngal pointed out the greater swath of Middle TN was hit bad. It’s going to take time to get back to normal TN life for all those areas but we will. We were literally pounded by wave after wave after wave of heavy rains that fell in sheets for two days nonstop. The weather people kept telling us it was going to end but it never seemed to do that.

Obama doesn’t care about anything or anybody except his “pals.” He was the same with the Kentucky ice storm, the oil spill, that hurricane during the elections that was to hit N.O. and parts of TX, and so forth and so on. It’s not going to matter what he takes credit for.

The smoke has cleared and the mirror has cracked into a hundred pieces, with a hundred tiny faces smiling back at him and he’s the only one who is unaware that all those faces are him.

I’m figuring TN will be treated pretty much like MS was during Katrina. All eyes were on N.O. and MS took what they could get from FEMA and trucked right along and they recovered better and faster for it, so I’m thankful nobody is caterwauling about how much Obama cares. We are a resilient bunch and we’ll get through this.

There were a bunch of idiots standing on a bridge yesterday on Antioch Pike at Haywood Lane with the water still raging. I saw them when I zipped down to the Dollar General in hopes that it was open (placed on higher ground) and I could pick up some cheap utility knives so I could start cutting out a ruined carpet and drying out my home office.

Even where the water has receded there is devastation in its wake.

With you in spirit. I would be with you in person but its hard to get into Nashvegas right now. Lotta roads they turn you back if you don’t live there or own a business in some areas. Everything kinda stops when I get around up to franklin so I hang down south and annoy the police down here. Stay safe.

Thank you,

Steph C (Diary) Monday, May 3rd at 9:13PM EDT (link)

I’m really fine, up on much higher ground. I can normally see I24 from my bedroom window but I couldn’t see anything those two days through the rain. But the sirens were incessant that first day, so I knew it was bad.

If you’re close enough they might allow you through if you want to volunteer at hon.org. Don’t know though. Haven’t checked it out myself, yet. Figure they’ll still need volunteers after I get my own little mess cleaned up.

Thanks for doing this article about Nashville, Tabitha.

janis (Diary) Tuesday, May 4th at 8:45AM EDT (link)

Steph is right, the rain totals were much higher than have been reported in many places. My folks poured out more than 12 inches from their backyard rain gauge, but many areas got 18-20 inches in those two days. My son’s fiance in Murfreesboro had to stand by and watch her sister’s house flood the entire first floor of her house. The water was knee-deep in the first floor and waist high in the yard outside.

As I write this this morning, the death toll from the flooding stands at 18 in TN. The number of homes and businesses affected by this is not yet known. Hundreds of thousands, at the least, would be my guess. The Cumberland River, which runs right through the heart of Nashville, has crested higher than any time in “modern times” as the news guy put it this morning. From the air, the view is of one of unbelievable devastation. And Nashville is a hilly city.

Obama is a disgrace. But Tennessee and the mid-state area in particular do not need whatever platitudes he might offer– one of the most notable aspects of disasters in this state is that people immediately fall to in order to help each other and NOWHERE has there been any reports of looting. I don’t recall even hearing a public official addressing the issue in case someone might have the notion to do something like that.

Then again, Tennessee is a red state.

The people of Tennessee will get little media attention because they are people who pick themselves up by their bootstraps and have the intelligence to know that the government will not rebuild their communities – they will. Your state is not dissimilar to Mississippi and Alabama after Katrina. Be proud. If I lived nearby, I would be helping you and/or your families tear out sheetrock. Since I am not able to do so, all of you are in my thoughts and prayers.

to assist the bitter clingers. However, it might be noteworthy to mention that some of the worst flooding in the region didn’t affect the Southern rube, gun slingin, Bible totin, homophobic racists, but areas heavily populated with people of color and poverty. This was an equal opportunity flood, but I guess as long as those evil racists are part of the mix, O will abstain from placing his hands on and healing the area.

I don’t understand… So, Obama didn’t mention the folks in Tennessee and their problems and seems uninterested…. I seem to remember a story from late last week, perhaps over the weekend, that some areas of Connecticut, affected by the winter storms this past season, applied for some sort of Federal help, and Obama basically picked and chose who got the funding. (Namely his Union buddies, and other people, while businesses and apartment building owners got the shaft) Can someone find the story, if it is true, then that would go a long way to proving that this President cares little for anyone who isn’t on his side of the aisle….

I live in the southernest part of middle Tn. We did not have as much flooding and destruction as our brethern to our north. We don’t need Obama- we are self reliant, eager to lend a hand to our neighbors and fellow man. So we’ll cling to our mops, buckets, and sump pumps as well as our guns and God. We don’t expect help from Obama- we expect to do what needs to be done. Country folk can survive-

in TN, KY, AL, my heart & prayers go out to you. Having lived through the 4 hurricanes in FL back in ’04, I can only hope your local officials don’t rely on FEMA or other Fed agencies for a quick response. You’ll have to do it on your own for the first bit. Better anyway, as the feds usually muck things up anyhow. Lord knows the Anointed One won’t be of any service. After all, it’s only flyover country to him.

PS: One good thing about ol’ Jeb Bush, back in ’04 & 05, is that he did get the state’s resources marshaled for first response. I’ll give him props for his performance then.

and I have faith in the people who live there. It’s not called the Volunteer state for nothin’. I’m thankful that my family members who live about 70 miles southeast were not hit as hard, but my heart goes out to those who are suffering. I am praying for those in TN as well as those affected by the oil spill in my adopted state of Alabama and our neighbors. One bright spot is that I heard the Ryman Auditorium was spared flooding because it sits on a hill, but I’m sure there are many historic spots that weren’t.

One other thought is that since Nashville has such a wonderful medical community, there are lots of people living outside the area that go to Nashville for their medical needs, including my own family. Hopefully, doctors, clinics and hospitals will be at full capacity soon and roads will be open so that those with medical needs can make it to their appointments.
