Yesterday was a glorious one for the movement.
Nikki Haley won in South Carolina – which really wasn’t a surprise. Gresham Barrett embarrassed himself by even staying in the race, but I suppose it was even more entertaining that way.
Utah was a less certain situation. In the absence of any credible polling, no one really had a handle on how either candidate was doing. Mike Lee had a great week going in. Everyone on the ground had anecdotal input… which means exactly nothing when the numbers start coming in.
Mike Lee is a solid, small government candidate. There was a stark contrast between him and Tim Bridgewater, the establishment candidate who proved he’d break on the side of big government when challenged in the form of TARP and Medicare Part D. It was a clear establishment vs. movement moment, and we came out victorious.
What we proved yesterday is that conservative principles win. Small government wins. Less spending wins. We don’t need a Sarah Palin endorsement or millions and millions of dollars. We don’t need to compromise our message and try to play both sides of the aisle. Candidates: Be conservative. Articulate your message. Engage the grassroots.
We can win because we’re right.
Here’s where I saw the most room for improvement in Utah, and I’d be willing to wager that we need more of this nationwide: We need volunteers. Campaigns need people to run their ground game – pounding signs, making phone calls, handing out literature, and helping GOTV efforts. It’s critical, especially the last 72 hours of the campaign. If you’re in a state with a hot race this year (Nevada, Kentucky, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Florida, I’m looking at you) connect with your local Tea Party organization or campaign. That way, the network is in place, and when it comes time to give our guys a push across the finish line, we don’t have to spend precious time digging up contacts.
If you aren’t sure where to go, start with FreedomWorks or any local Tea Party.
We’ve still got a lot of work to do before November, folks. Don’t get lazy – this is when it matters.

Federalism IS a national issue!
Freedoms Truth (Diary) Wednesday, June 23rd at 4:26PM EDT (link)Talk about a strawman…
Since when does ‘national’ race equate to individuals and states not making their own determinations?
The fact is – THE VERY RIGHT OF STATES TO MAKE THEIR OWN DECISIONS IS THE #1 NATIONAL ISSUE IN 2010.
Obama and his adminstration are attacking the 10th amendment, Federalism, and the concept of states and individuals making their own decisions. SO it’s a national issue – does DC decide or do states and individuals?
I am aghast that mere stating the fact that we have national issues turns one into a ‘tyrant’.

Volunteers are hard to find.
earlgrey (Diary) Wednesday, June 23rd at 4:32PM EDT (link)I have made over 400 phone calls to people that have voted republican in primaries the last two years. Admittedly about 1 in 3 of these calls did I actually get some one to talk to.
Of all those calls I found 3 people who were willing to volunteer and another that was already volunteering.
I dont’ want to throw cold water on the sentiments in the post. I agree and it could very well have been the GOTV efforts of Freedomworks and others that pushed Lee over the top. 51/49 is awfully close.
I am just finding it frustrating. I am working with local GOP and I also participate in my local tea party. If anyone has some suggestions on other groups let me know.
No matter what the organization, volunteers are hard to find
zollistar (Diary) Wednesday, June 23rd at 8:30PM EDT (link)That’s the nature of the beast.
A number of years ago there was a really vexing problem on my block affecting dozens and dozens of us. (I live in New York City.) Exactly two of us worked to turn it around, never mind everyone’s bitter complaints.
Me? I acted as the follow-through person: one woman did all the research and heavy lifting; I did everything she needed me to do. I did try to raise money for our effort going door to door. Literally. Everyone complained liberally; few donated at all, none liberally.
It
s the nature of the beast, I tell you.
I accept that reality. I just volunteer. In fact, in one minute I’m going to be dialing in to our local week Tea Party conference call.

From a Volunteer's Viewpoint
candacesalima Wednesday, June 23rd at 5:02PM EDT (link)This is precisely what Mike pushed Mike Lee over the top. He had volunteers, such as myself, across the state, working hard every day to help him win the primary. We made phone calls. We handed out literature. We participated in honk ‘n waves. We wore our shirts and buttons everywhere we went. We answered questions of anyone who stopped us. We blogged, Facebooked and Tweeted. We responded to every blog and news article written about Mike Lee, offering our viewpoints, correct misconceptions and outright lies and more.
Could we have used more volunteers? Absolutely. Could we have used more Utahns caring yesterday and getting off their butts and voting? Absolutely. Nonetheless, we all worked very hard to get Mike Lee a win, and none of us worked harder than Mike Lee himself.
We had a victory yesterday and I am going to take a day or so enjoying the fact that we won. Then backs to work and hitting the ground running. Personally, I hope Mike and Sharon are getting some sleep. They deserve it!

rdelbov Wednesday, June 23rd at 5:16PM EDT (link)We need more volunteers–no doubt about it. You can never have enough.
Was Tuesday a National election. No it was 4/5 local elections with nationalized issues. Millions of people across the nation has come to the conclusion that we are on the wrong course.
51-49 in Utah and the local people who these folks best made the decision.
I think the closeness of the race shows that a lot of conservatives saw a lot of good in both candidates. There were no demon sheep in Utah.
There were people on the Lee-in my opinion-who contorted the Bridgewater record but in the end it came down to who turned out. The Lee forces in the Southern part of Utah-especially Washington county which had a big turnout-won the election. Kudos to them. This race was not Right and RINO. Ultimately it came down to which very conservative man would win. Oh plus both candidates were from Utah county and Lee won by 2400 votes there 19200-16800. The locals who see these folks at church and at the mall voted narrowly for Lee and that made a difference.
So GOTV and friends/neighbors won this race.
Bridgewater lost, quit campaigning for him and disparaging Lee supporters.

NightTwister (Diary) Wednesday, June 23rd at 11:27PM EDT (link)First of all, the guy didn’t say anything negative about Mike Lee.
Secondly, even if Lee is a shoe-in for the General, there are other elections involved. If Bridgewater supporters get sick of the whole thing and stay home, it could affect a lot of other down-ticket races.

rdelbov can’t help but throw in a jab at either Mike Lee or his supporters each time he posts. Specifically, in the post above:
That is disparaging Lee supporters, just as I said in my comment. Which, I noticed, you conveniently changed to Lee himself in your reading rather than Lee supporters as I actually said in my comment.
It’s a bit off putting to watch you carry the flag of the 11th commandment while overlooking the attacks this rdelbov has been throwing around for the last few days.
Heck, he even tried to disparage Chuck DeVore by implying he hadn’t endorsed Fiorina after the primary.
So beat your dead horse and I will beat mine, but at least I will be consistent.

You were the one that mentioned bringing people together. Your response was no better than rdelbov’s comment.
As for rdelbov’s previous comments, it’s not much different than the other primary knife fights I’ve seen going around. I read his comment as reaching out….perhaps not perfectly, but reaching out nonetheless. You just came out and slapped that outreached hand. That was what my comment was about.
Also, I see nothing in his comment about Chuck DeVore. I haven’t much followed the Senate race in CA. I have enough of my own worries in CO.

Aaron Gardner (Diary) Thursday, June 24th at 9:54AM EDT (link)And that is fine, that’s your focus. Also, you’ll notice that the Utah primary is over and rdelbov continues to campaign for Bridgewater while disparaging Lee supporters. If this were before the election I wouldn’t have commented, but since the primary is over he should really just quit pushing the candidate who lost.
As to the 11 Commandment, sure, you don’t use that phrase, but that doesn’t change the fact that that is what you have been beating on for about 3 months now.
And again, that’s fine, just do so consistently instead of giving a pass to people who are going after Erick and Lee supporters.

And no, I’m sorry, but I haven’t been beating on any 11th Commandment. Not in CO, and not anywhere else. As for Erick, he’s a big boy and can take it as far as I can see.
What I’ve been saying is, as far as predicted votes in the Senate go, there’s no real difference between Buck and Norton. Both candidates are conservative, so I don’t see a reason to go to the same lengths as were gone in Florida and Utah. Voters in CO are a fickle bunch. I’ve pointed to recent history where candidates were sabotaged by Republicans and we ended up with the much-worse Democrat. I don’t want to see that happen again.

Aaron Gardner (Diary) Thursday, June 24th at 10:27AM EDT (link)I’m not the guy still campaigning for the guy who lost 3 days ago. Just look at his comment since the primary has been over. Each one has either been an attack against Lee supporters or an attack against Erick.
If you don’t see that then the only conclusion I can come to, because I actually think you are smart, is that you aren’t paying attention or you are willfully ignorant. I assume it is the first.

He stayed in and fought for what he believed in win or lose. Funny the same thing that you said was said about Chuck in CA. Was Chuck right for staying in the race all the way to the end when winning was not possible or does the same standard apply and he embarrassed himself by remaining in the fight? I think not and it does not apply to Barrett either. Nikki won, good for her, hope she is able to do great things for the state and country, but you are dead wrong that someone should give up when it looks bad just for your pleasure or approval. If everyone did that we would have very few good choices left to vote for and Angle is one example of a hang in who has turned it around!

conservativecrusade (Diary) Wednesday, June 23rd at 10:51PM EDT (link)and I was not a Barrett supporter, he did not claim she was not a Christian, only announced he was. What an “ally” says is not the campaigns stance nor is it “him” saying it. If every campaign was judged by what supporters did or said, there would not be a single good one. And claiming christian status is very common in this state since most repub voters claim to be christian. It is simply a move to get votes, it was not denouncing her claim to christianity. That is a stretch streiff and you know it.
And Neil, being a runoff does not negate the fact that the two compare. Both types of primaries are a way for a candidate to try to get the job he or she wants, Barrett was entitled to be in the runoff even if it was a longshot, and Chuck was entitled to fight to the end in his primary/ He had that right even with so many, including on here, calling for him to resign since he was loosing so bad so that Campbell did not pull out a win. Splitting hairs to try to invalidate and argument never works, except in the mind of the person splitting hairs. Comparisons do not have to be exact, only similar.

I agree completely
SirGladiator (Diary) Wednesday, June 23rd at 7:34PM EDT (link)Barrett totally embarassed himself, both by calling for a runoff when he was starting out at 22 vs his opponent’s 49, something that made no sense based on the numbers alone, and then by campaigning against his opponent by basicly saying vote for me Im the real Christian. Im a Christian myself, and I didn’t like that at all, I dare say most folks didn’t, because Nikki IS a Christian. If he had done the right thing, and the logical thing, by not calling for a runoff, he would’ve had the good will of Republicans everywhere, I certainly would’ve been very much inclined to support him in his next quest for higher office. Instead he alienated much of the party, and its highly unlikely he will ever be able to win a statewide race now, certainly I wouldn’t vote for him for dog catcher after this.
I also agree compeltely with an earlier comment about the Delaware Senate race, Christine O’Donnell is going to be our next Nikki Haley, she’s running against a liberal democrat with an R next to his name, if that guy wins the primary its going to be liberal vs liberal in November and we’ll lose either way. Hopefully Christine will defeat the liberal in the GOP Primary, then the other liberal, the one with the D next to his name, in November!
