MEMBER DIARY

This day. This moment.

If you don’t know how RedState started seven years ago, here’s the story. It’s a tale of a few guys with a few dollars and a few basic principles who got together and started something small.

In the fullness of time, that something small became something big. The cast of characters changed, too: the original three co-founders are now off doing many other things. I was the first to depart, and the others, like MacArthur’s old soldiers, faded away. When I met South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley this evening, I told her I was the fellow who had the idea that became RedState. She gave me a quizzical look, and I said, “Don’t worry — the only guy you need to know is Erick. He’s in charge.” That’s true, and I believe that encapsulates many of the reasons for RedState’s success.

Today, this success demonstrates itself in full. If you’re reading this, you likely know why. If you don’t know why — well, just turn on CNN, or Fox News, or C-SPAN at 1pm Eastern and have a seat. Anonymous Hill staffers may not think RedState matters — but about an hour after you start watching that television, all of America will know just how much it does.

If you’ve been here fighting the fight since the beginning, this moment is yours. If you’ve been here fighting the fight since a year past, the moment is yours. If you’ve been here fighting the fight for the first time today — this moment is yours. As St John Chrysostom said in a different context, all are welcome at any time on this, the front line of the political and intellectual battle for America.

Something big goes down today. It happens at RedState because RedState matters. It matters because of you. But also …. it matters because a few guys got together for cheap burgers seven years ago and shared a dream.

Now, then. Get ready.

    Good times.

Just finished the book “American Awakening” by Jim DeMint (included in our RedState Gathering welcome bag) and was able to shake his hand as he left the reception.

From one tea partier to another, God Bless You Sen. DeMint! And thank you for your service to our country!

We got your back…. keep up the fight!

Frankly, I could not put it down. What an amazing statesman, one for the history books. South Carolina is most fortunate to have him as their Senator and I am encouraged that he is seeking to recruit more like him.

I wish I could be at the RS gathering, but work just would not let me. I have learned a great deal from this site and it is a daily read for me. I love the debates and discussions, as well as the informative diaries. Keep up the great work!

For those of you who are at the Redstate Gathering, please listen closely to the speakers as to whether any of them say a word about the need for Redstaters, and conservatives in general, to flock into the Republican Party as voting members of it. If any do, please try to record what they said any way you can and let us know. (Hint: those already “inside” the Party don’t really want you to come inside it — it’s not in their self-interest.)

Also, if you think it’s appropriate, please ask any of the incumbent Republicans whether they urge their fellow conservative Republicans to come into the Party to help fill up the approximately half of the precinct committeeman positions that currently are vacant.

Let’s start “fighting the fight” inside the Republican Party as voting members of it, shall we not?

Consider why incumbent Republicans never seem to mention this when they speak to conservative audiences. Might the reason be that it’s not in their self-interest to do so? Especially in light of the fact that about half of the voting member slots of the Party — the precinct committeeman slots — that elect the Party leadership are vacant? Do the math. And realize that turn-out in the Republican primary elections is, traditionally, something in the vicinity of about 20%.

Do you occupy one of those “card-carrying member” voting slots inside the Republican Party? If not, why not?

    Thank you.

I am willing to support you in making this a sticky, maybe put the explanation of how to become a precinct head etc on the site header. But your tenacity sometimes comes off as insulting, and we don’t need this every single day.

      • http://jeffemanuel.net Jeff Emanuel

        ….it has attracted/recruited.

To the point of the thread, Josh is absolutely right to be proud. Seven years ago he, Mike, and Ben started a juggernaut that has done nothing but grow since. Very proud to be a small part of this machine.

        • MikeG (Icythus)

Or are you just speculating? From the way you wrote the above it’s unclear.

I have a hard time believing that ColdWarrior’s approach on this issue has made existing Precinct Committeemen or those already disposed to become leaders in their local party give up their positions and back away from the fight.

Now, if you simply mean that only a minority of those he reaches follows through on his admonitions, that’s fine, but you can say that of most political activism. You’ve got to knock on a lot of doors or make a lot of phone calls just to get a few people to put a sign in their yard or volunteer for an afternoon. It would require a Herculean effort to help fundamentally change the way a large number of conservatives approach their involvement with the GOP, and that’s the effort I see ColdWarrior put in every day at this website.

        • runner12

irks me….but I think it is a good thing. I NEED to be challenged, to be pushed out of my comfort zone. I am not yet a precinct person, but the more he harps on it the closer I get to taking the plunge.

The problem is that in my state the process is not clearly explained from the info I have found, so I will have to do some more digging. I will probably have to be dragged kicking and screaming, but something tells me I will eventually end up becoming a part of the process. All thanks to a guy named CW who risks being persona non grata because he is passionate about what he believes in.

          • http://www.theprecinctproject.wordpress.com ColdWarrior

you figure out the mystery. Some of the “establishment Republicans” in some areas of the country deliberately shroud the process to keep new people out.

cajoled, into making this substantial time commitment.

Still, his work and success are hugely important, and should be celebrated in this celebratory thread.

          * in a spirtually upliftin, family values friendly way of course

          • rightwingmom52

I much prefer the hard truth in an unvarnished direct approach. CW is right and he’s not asking any more than what he’s done himself. We have neither the time nor elections to waste trying to cajole people to get up off the couch and start doing some of the heavy lifting. How many folks have you and others recruited? Are you a PC?

          • JSobieski

CW is not running for office. If CW is disliked but the message communicated to thousands, I think the venture is a success.

Anyone who goes knocking on doors for political candidates and issues is going to annoy a far higher percentage of people than any blow back CW generates on RS.

Repetition is necessary because not everyone reads RS on a daily basis.

CW is doing a necessary service, and undoubtedly that knowledge trumps the personal blowback that inevitably accompanies such efforts.

          • rightwingmom52

I was really surprised at the number of folks I met here who don’t read redstate. Of course, I think they will now.

As for CW’s persistence, regulars know the message by now. If they don’t like it nobody’s forcing them to read it. Guilty consciences?

        • http://teapartisan.wordpress.com Loren Heal

You know very well that I was a prototypical Redstate poster: blogging, commenting, but not doing anything in the real world.

Thanks largely to the efforts of ColdWarrior, I am very much more active. In fact, GOTV, and not armchair philosophy, has become my focus.

And even more pointedly, I now recruit conservatives to become precinct activists, both inside the party and on a nonpartisan basis, as well.

So I would be surprised indeed if the number of people ColdWarrior has driven away is greater than the number of people that he, and now I, have recruited.

pathetically inaccurate cheap shot. Covered quite correctly above for exactly what it is.

This is ColdWarrior’s passion, and it’s a damn important one too. Given the amount of traffic that comes through RedState, it makes sense for him to post about the Precinct Committeemen Project as much as possible, to generate maximum exposure. Sure, it might seem repetitive to some of us regulars (the same as a killer campaign speech might seem repetitive to the traveling staffers or reporters attached to a candidate’s campaign), but he’s not trying to be insulting, just effective.

        Keep it up, ColdWarrior!

      • jstjoan

I have been motivated by him not insulted by him. His “tenacity” in explaining the process and educating me about it gave me the nerve to join in and I’m certainly not the only one. You should be thanking him instead of trashing him. Btw, if you’re not a precinct officer then STFU.

As for the thread, congratulations RedState on your big day today. I’ll be watching on CSPAN but there with you in spirit.

        • westcoastpatriette

I’m a late-blooming, Tea Party warrior and did not even know there was a difference between being a registered Republican and a member of the Party. Thanks to CW, I will be attending our local Republican Party meeting next week to find out how to become a precinct committeeman. And at our newly formed local Tea Party meeting, I also sparked interest in others to do the same–all because of CW’s non-stop preaching on the issue. So, don’t stop–your strategy is working and will continue to play an important part as other green political activists come on the scene.

Truly, it is a shame that anyone on these pages would find take umbrage at his presence, no matter its frequency.

But, I guess some find it offensive of him to interrupt the celebration with a heartfelt plea to take effectual action to remedy the plight of the Conservative cause. Specifically I refer to the GOTV deficit between the statists and the conservatives.

Always nice to “see” you, Doc, and I remember Josh’s linked article very well. I wasn’t around for the “birth” of RS, but I lived on these pages starting from the ’07 campaign.

Thank you to everyone taking the plunge. It is crucial that as many as possible do so.

        • Doc Holliday

CW has helped people become precinct committeemen, that is a great contribution.

It is good to remember than many people here have contributed to the party in their own ways, quite a few have been more than precinct chairs.

btw, I think his sig is very effective.

        • Doc Holliday

nice to see you too. I didn’t see the linked article the first time, I thought RS started when I got here, lol. Like most people think history began the day they were born.

      • littlehouse18

the Republican Party by grabbing these PC seats? We’d better get moving; thanks, CW.

    • cwilson

the Secretary reported that 60% of the precincts in our county have NO committeemen. How in the heck are we going to do precinct-level GOTV next year without a single committeeman in over half of our precincts? Organizing for America, Obama’s all-about-me version of the Democrat Party organization, doesn’t have this problem — and that’s what we’re up against.

I applaud CW’s tenacity — it’s what convinced me to sign up.

  • Christine (Trelaina)

It’s had ups and downs like anything else, but I’ve been here more than 5 years and it’s been so wonderful to see it grow in size and influence while still maintaining core values.

My only regret is that I can’t be there today. I will be watching though, and I hope those of you who are there know that for every person sitting in a chair cheering, there are several others wishing they could be with you!!

  • lizfstone

Redstate is here. It’s my first read every morning. Thanks for all who contribute.

Wish I could be in Charleston but will definitely be tuning in at 1:00 for the big announcement!

Hope you saw this article yesterday: http://www.statesman.com/news/texas-politics/perrys-announcement-highlights-redstates-growing-influence-1729797.html

  • rabidcaveman

I have only heard token reviews of ANYTHING posted on this site, and all acrimony is directed towards Erick.

ColdWarrior is correct. This site is my hidden .38 snub-nose, when I have to break out some knowledge on someone. It seems that we(as Redstaters ALL) have been ignored by the Republican? mainstream.

Though I hate the limelight, and such conditions could make us all make jerks out of ourselves, I appreciate the silent majority that IS Redstate.

  • westcoastpatriette

I love the integrity, the welcome inclusion of God-fearers’ ideas about how their faith plays a role in their political viewpoints and especially, I love all the expertise the various members contribute in the lively discussions that take place throughout the day.

Thank you all and I hope I can be a positive contributor as we move forward to reclaim America’s greatness through conservative principles.

And periodically your name would come up for the standard abuse, the essence being the failure to see the rays of light and life emanating from government. I put it politely.
Times have changed, and a good thing it is.
    Good luck and thanks.

This is a great place to exchange ideas, sharpen your online debating skills, improve your ability to state your ideas clearly and persuasively, and thicken your skin!

The skills I’ve learned here have made me a more effective advocate in local politics.

MBecker908, ColdWarrior, aesthete, azaeroprof and all the other Grand Canyon State Redstaters—-looking forward to working with you in the elections to come.

Redstaters in Charleston—-if you have some time, drive down to Savannah and eat lunch as Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House. Unlike Paula Deen’s, Mrs. Wilkes is REAL Savannah…without the long wait for a table.

I’m a teacher and school started back this week and I let the whole thing get by me.

RedState (and ColdWarrior) are the reasons I am a Precinct Captain in my county.

It was at the Redstate Gathering in Buckhead where I first met Karen Handel and ended up her County Chair in my county.

At the Redstate Gathering in Austin, I met Gov Perry and had my picture taken with him.

I am banging my head on the wall that I’m not in Charleston today. I won’t miss next year’s Gathering.

The site has been a wonderful home of sorts and the work spent developing is greatly appreciate.

Its been an awesome ride which I does not end any time soon.

I also appreciate the opportunity to blog at NEBV when it was running.

Wishing I was there in SC, but the door being closed is part of life. Missing you guys.

  • MikeG (Icythus)

This site has been instrumental in my political development ever since I first signed up back in 2004 as a fresh-faced high school freshman eager to cut my teeth in politics. Six years later and RedState is still my home-away-from-home on the Internet.

Keep up the fantastic work guys! Hopefully next year I’ll make it to the Gathering! :-)
