Social Victory Center and the GOP’s Tech Advantage

More than in any past election, online digital technology will be essential to a winning 2012 campaign. For the Republican National Committee, it is not enough simply to imitate the standard practices of the day. We want to raise the bar—identifying and developing new technology to compete in the digital sphere.

That entrepreneurial spirit led us to create the GOP Social Victory Center, a first of its kind online application that revolutionizes the way volunteers and activists take part in elections. The SVC, which launched yesterday, puts all the important tools in one place, breaks down geographic barriers, and instantly connects users with our grassroots network across the country. And it’s all right on Facebook.

No other campaign or committee—neither the Obama campaign nor the DNC—has done what we have: leveraged the popularity of Facebook to empower Americans to be directly involved in the political process.

Welcome to the new frontier of digital activism.

Whether we admit it or not, Americans are glued to what is happening on Facebook. 161 million Americans are active users of the site. Fifty percent visit daily. Every day, posts are “liked” or commented on 2.7 billion times. The average user spends six to seven hours on Facebook a month. It only makes sense to offer a one-stop shop for political activism here, rather than asking users to hassle with visiting other sites and creating multiple accounts.

After logging into the Social Victory Center—in the same way one uses any Facebook application—users find political news and videos that are customized to their interests and location. They can engage and organize with voters across the country through discussions and event planning features, and they can find ways to volunteer—in their communities or from home.

Without leaving the Facebook application, a volunteer can make voter-identification or Get Out the Vote phone calls to pivotal battleground states right from home. We’ve streamlined and simplified a process that was often clunky and frustrating—but one that is critical to voter turnout on Election Day.

As volunteers read and watch, discuss and volunteer, their friends are alerted to their actions. Sharing is automatic, allowing us to immediately expand our reach. Time and money will not have to be spent asking people to view our multimedia. Thanks to their friends’ use of the SVC, previously unengaged users will see it all right on their Facebook Newsfeeds.

The SVC is not the first time the RNC has developed and deployed cutting-edge technology. In 2011, we launched a video mobile message system, our “mobile army,” with which we can send videos and other exclusive content directly to subscribers’ smart phones anytime, anywhere.

With the relationships and following we have built on social media in the last year, we will immediately connect thousands of energized activists with the Social Victory Center. And in no time, countless others will have heard of it—and decided to sign up.

The SVC will allow us to do an even better job of listening to our supporters and to conservative grassroots activists across the country. We have worked hard to encourage and support the important conversation and bottom-up activism that the Internet allows. With the SVC, we hope to facilitate more of those conversations and create more connections and relationships.

The RNC will, of course, continue with our successful online advertising, our web videos, and our news-driving Twitter campaigns. We unrelentingly hold President Obama accountable to his record and his words, and when news breaks we make sure it breaks through the noise to reach the average voter.

Social media has dramatically changed politics in recent years, giving more power to the individual voter and disseminating information at record speed. Now, with the GOP Social Victory Center, Republicans will use this resource to its fullest potential. And that’s certainly something to “like.”

      With the statistics given above, it seems that almost everyone in America is constantly online in Facebook. This certainly may be true for a large group of people, which are socializing with friends and family members, but I strongly believe that this is the real value and place of Facebook. Unfortunately it is becoming more and more universal, but this brings such big data flow to the individual user, that in several years it wont be possible for anyone to scrap any kind of useful info from it. On the other hand the app will work well for the next elections …

    Republicans continue to follow a Top-down, centrally-controlled model, where Activists are only used as ATMs, or drone door-knockers.

    Democrats have a Unified Database so all door-knock & phone bank results work to the benefit of all Democrat present and future candidates. Republicans have 10,000 databases none of which talk to each other. Each door-knock has value for 1 and only 1 candidate.

    When we get a Unified Database [see rVotes.com], we will be serious.

      I work in the tech field and I’m amazed at the tech network of the Dems. In seconds, they can suspend a Twitter account or show up in-mass anywhere in the US for an instant crowd. Dems know that most of their supporters don’t have two nickles to rub together so they use the power of “push” to get their way whether my crying about having their feelings hurt publicly or demonstrating on some CEO’s front lawn. They spam, FB, and Tweet anyone and everyone who signs up and viola’ – supporters for any and all cause.

      The GOP however, no matter on a national or local level, has a donation slip in EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF MEDIA they send out whether by mail or email. And worse, they mask the begging with useless surveys all worded to obviously cater to conservatives. I imagine some staffer opening the envelope, tossing the survey in the recycle, and putting the check in the stack.

      The GOP needs to get with the program. I have a friend who runs a local newspaper and she gets all the Dem spam and is completely amazed. She sent me an email just the other day wishing the GOP would do the same.

      “And, yes, the Dems are WAY ahead of the Republicans but it’s not only social networking. I probably get a dozen — or more — e-mails from all kinds of DNC goons EVERY DAY, a couple of which are in Spanish.

      I get an occasional e-mail from Richard Viguerie — infrequently from Reince Priebus, often just asking for contributions.

      Just now, I have SIX from dnc.org. (I just emptied my e-mail a couple of hours ago). And, EVERY time a Republican opens his mouth I get a half dozen or so messages from rapidresponse@dnc.org spewing their propaganda to contradict what the Republican just said. Another one I hear from is Brad Woodhouse at the DNC. He sends out under his name, and the Indiana Democratis Party, Brad Luna” brad@lunamediagroup.com, Jeremy Funk <funk@AMERICANSUNITEDFORCHANGE.ORG, and
      "Melanie Roussell" <RoussellM@dnc.org, just to name a few.

      Then there are numerous front groups such as marketing@ourfriendsoffreedom.com and… probably Soros mouthpieces. I don't know because I don't have time to be checking them out. I just get them, hit delete and get furious that most of what I do get from Republican/conservatives are asking for contributions.

      We are WAY behind … I mentioned some of this to (name withheld) and (name withheld) some time ago and they reemed me out. I didn't mean to criticize the local organization. … it's from the top. It's like I told a telemarketer yesterday — after agreeing w/ everything they said about the Dems. … would I contribute to the RNC? No. Not as long as I don't see some leadership among CONSERVATIVES coming from the RNC. :(

        There is a reason for the “top-down” management of GOP efforts: they do not want Tea-Party Conservative types to gain any traction or influence.

        The chaos of social media is something they cannot control and therefore they avoid it and do not promote it. Our RINO Elitists are stuck in some 1950′s country club.

        You are quite right about the constant money-grubbing! It makes the Republicans look like…money grubbers! :) Not unlike reading NewsMax.com and finding ads for contributions popping up in the middle of the article.

        However, by ignoring the Internet “social media” Republicans are making things harder for themselves.
