From the diaries.
The people of North Carolina's 8th Congressional District have a tremendous opportunity to replace liberal Larry Kissell with a conservative Republican this year. There are five candidates running in the Republican Primary, but conservatives are rallying behind one individual-- Richard Hudson.
Richard is a life-long grassroots conservative who has served behind the scenes as District Director for Congressman Robin Hayes and as my Chief of Staff. Richard is a true conservative who never planned to run for public office, but has become so fed up with the direction of this country that he is running to change that direction.
Mrs. Jesse Helms is Co-Chair of Richard's campaign and he has the support of conservatives across North Carolina and the 8th District. Richard has also earned the support of RSC Chairman Jim Jordan and twenty of the most conservative members of Congress. We support Richard because we know him and we know that he will help us fight the deals and the bail outs and will work with the conservatives in the House to dramatically cut spending and enact real conservative solutions to the problems facing our country.
Some of Richard's opponents have tried to label Richard as a Washington insider. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Richard is a man of conviction who has spent years fighting within the conservative movement. Anyone who knows Richard will tell you he would much rather be in a deer stand in Cabarrus County than a cocktail party in Washington.
Upon endorsing Richard, Mrs. Jesse Helms said, "I know what a real conservative is. Richard Hudson is a true, dyed-in-the-wool conservative the people of the 8th District can trust." I heartily agree. That is why he has my support, and I hope you will join me in sending a true conservative, Richard Hudson, to Congress from the 8th District.
Virginia Foxx is a strong voice for North Carolina values and is a champion of conservative ideas. She is well-known for fighting to rein in wasteful government spending, reduce the national debt and jump start economic growth. Virginia believes that we need to get government out of the way by slashing burdensome taxes and red-tape. She knows that low taxes and American innovation will put more North Carolinians back to work.
