So Donald Trump called Ted Cruz a “maniac” this weekend, which is like the platonic ideal of the pot calling the kettle black. Or Bill Clinton calling someone a sex offender.

The remarks came on Fox News Sunday and were part of The Donald’s argument that he gets along with people better than Cruz. He said that Cruz isn’t “qualified” to be President because he doesn’t “have the right temperament.”

“You look at the way that he’s dealt with the Senate, where he goes in there, frankly like a little bit of a maniac. You’re never going to get things done that way. […] You can’t walk into the Senate and scream and call people liars and not be able to cajole and get along with people. He’ll never get anything done. And that’s the problem with Ted.”

Not taking the criticism too seriously, Cruz responded on Twitter.

The Right Scoop called the response hilarious, but there is a more serious side to this argument.

As Erick pointed out this morning, the stands that Ted Cruz has taken on the Senate floor have been important ones, and given voice to the rebellion of conservatives against not just the Democrat establishment but the Republican one. He’s taken those stands at risk of his political career and personal standing.

Not only has Trump never taken a conservative stand on anything unless it was during a speech to benefit himself, certainly not at any personal risk, but is actively attacking someone taking conservative stands as being a “maniac.”

Just to make it perfectly clear: Donald Trump is accusing Ted Cruz of being a “maniac” because he didn’t play nice with the establishment and the Democrats.

And I’ll repeat that for the Trump fans. Donald Trump is accusing Ted Cruz of being a “maniac” because he didn’t play nice with the establishment and the Democrats.

In any case, I can only find two faults with Ted’s response.

  • One) Go stronger next time. It’s time to land a hit. Past time.
  • Two) Personally, I prefer this version of “Maniac”:

What’s that? What do I mean by danger zone? Don’t tell me you guys don’t know the lyrics!
