The Ratings Are in, and They're Important: Left-Wing The Conners vs. Right-Wing Last Man Standing

Tim Allen isn’t liberal. He’s made that clear in the last few years, and it’s no doubt failed to ingratiate him to many in Hollywood.

Surely that fact played into the inexplicable cancellation of his hit sitcom, Last Man Standing, in May of 2017. The show — which had run for six years — was ABC’s second-most watched program during the 2016-17 season.

Nonetheless, CANNED.

Like tuna.

Sooooo fishy.

But ALAS — Fox picked up the hit, poised to give America a heaping helping of 7th-season glory.

Some speculated that ABC’s initial success with the Roseanne resurrection bolstered Fox’s confidence in the LMS move. Of course, shortly after Roseanne’s return, a certain tweet by the show’s star tanked the ship (see here and especially here — Holy Cow).

So now we have the Right vs. the Left: both shows recently returned — Allen’s conservative Last Man (about a Trump-supporting husband and father), and the middle finger to Republican Roseanne Barr as an iteration resulting from her character’s death.

So both sides, come out fighting!

Ding Ding!

How’d they do?

Last Man Standing RULES. It’s killing the competition on Friday nights, averaging 8 million viewers. Its September 28th premier roped in a 1.8 rating among adults ages 18-49. As pointed out by Variety, that score kicked serious butt, even compared to the successful show’s past numbers:

“By comparison, the Season 6 premiere on ABC drew a 1.1 rating and 6 million viewers, while that season as a whole averaged a 1.2 rating and 6.4 million viewers. In fact, the last time the series drew over 8 million viewers was back in its fourth season, and the last time it drew a 1.8 rating or better was in Season 2. It was also Fox’s most watched comedy on any night in nearly seven years, excluding NFL nights, and was by far the top-rated show of Friday night.”

What of The Conners?

On Tuesday, the Roseanne-less comedy splashed into the airwaves with 10.5 million viewers and a 18-49 rating of 2.3 — 55% lower than the original reboot’s March 27th debut.

Despite the plummet compared to last spring — and regardless of its future scores — expect the Left to champion the program. Esquire published its review on October 16th, gushing, “The Conners Is What the Roseanne Reboot Should Have Been All Along.” Alternately, of course, if the show takes a perpetual dive, networks such as CNN and MSNBC can simply claim pro-Trump Barr tainted the series.

Either way, if you’re looking for something good to watch, check out Last Man Standing (and if you want more Tim, I recommend the movie Galaxy Quest). In this case, the audience — and real diversity (see here) — won. And unashamed conservative Tim Allen fits the show’s title expertly. We need more unashamed conservatives like Tim, and more red victories in the culture; and Last Man Standing is a stand-up triumph indeed.
