Twitter Wrongly Banned an AOC Parody Account. But is it Any Different Than the Real One?

On Monday, Twitter banned an Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez parody account, according to Fox, “apparently because it sounded too much like” the actual congresswoman in its mockery.

The account labeled itself a parody in both its name and biography. However, Twitter explained that @AOCPress was shut down because of its “misleading account information in order to engage in spamming, abusive, or disruptive behavior including attempts to manipulate the conversations on Twitter,” as per its regulations.

In other words, the account didn’t do what Twitter claimed it did.

The account’s creator, Michael Morrison, also got canned.

An email from the platform pointed out this, too:

“You also may not ‘post duplicative or substantially similar content, replies, or mentions over multiple accounts or multiple duplicate updates on one account, or create duplicate or substantially similar accounts.’ This account will not be reinstated.”

Yappin’ to HumanEvents.com, Michael said he thinks he got the turd treatment because his creation’d become such a hit:

“In the past month and a half alone, the account grew by roughly 50,000 followers. We’ve had tweets with over 30,000 likes on them, so I think Twitter decided it was time for [the account] to go.”

It’s easy to imagine it growing, and it’s even easier to believe it could get confused with the real person — in an election for “Purveyor of the Dumbest Things Ever Said in Politics,” in a matter of mere months, the FartFighter’s elevated herself to the level of Fierce Contender (here, here, here, here, and here).

So a parody account farted back. No surprise.

But then Twitter pulled the plug…or, plugged the…you know.

And some people are protesting. Like ol’ DJTJ:

Some believe AOC is a parody of AOC, so the blur was somethin’ Twitter didn’t like:

@AOCPress isn’t the only conservative(?) tweeter getting its beak shut as of late: As I covered on April 30th, Oscar nominee James Woods got thrown into the social media slammer (here).

But have no fear: the Big Cheese is watchin’ like a hawk. And you know they ain’t gonna muzzle that squawker:

I haven’t seen @AOCPress’s material, but it is hard to imagine how one might take the absurdity of her statements and the ferocity of her misunderstanding to greater heights. She thinks everything can be free for everyone without most everyone having to pay for everything to be free for them; she asserts that we end air travel as she flies; and she gives interviews like this:

If they’re gonna ban @AOCPress for being a parody, they’d might as well close up shop for @CNN.

P.S. Speaking of parody, why isn’t SNL milking the goldmine of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for all its worth? Maybe because of this.
