Bill Maher Slams Democrats for Not Sufficiently Attacking Amy Coney Barrett's Faith: 'Being Nuts Is Relevant'

Bill Maher has definite thoughts on religion, and few if any are positive.

The same seems to go for his thoughts on Republicans, which makes it no surprise the comedian/political commentator is speaking out against Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett and her religious roots.

During Friday’s episode of HBO’s Real Time, Maher slammed Senate Democrats for not going harder on ACB over her Christianity while calling the wife and mother of seven “nuts.”

He dug in during a “New Rule” segment:

“New rule: Democrats have to stop talking about packing the Supreme Court, because it’s already packed — with Catholics.”

Justices Clarence Thomas, Brett Kavanaugh, Sonia Sotomayor, and Neil Gorsuch — he pointed out — all have Catholic backgrounds.

As noted by The Daily Wire, Gorsuch later became an Episcopalian — or, as Bill described it, “a Catholic who flunked Latin.”

Apparently, Bill himself comes from a Catholic core.

From the Wire:

Maher lamented that if Barrett is confirmed, seven of the nine justices will be Roman Catholics, which he said he has “nothing against…except my entire upbringing.”

The entertainer tried to turn it around on believers of Jesus:

“If seven out of nine justices were Jews or Muslims or Buddhists, would that be okay? And if faith is this super-important element of life, as Barrett and her Republican supporters say it is, shouldn’t we have a healthier balance on our highest court?”

Of course, it isn’t just Republicans who are professed adherents of the Holy Church. That goes for congresspeople as well.

As I covered in September, civil rights attorney (and former Democrat) Leo Terrell observed just such a thing.

Here’s what he had to say on Fox News, in response to a clip in which Maher predicted, “We’ll all be saying [Amy Coney Barrett’s] name a lot, I’m sure, ’cause she’s a f—in’ nut”:

“This is the part that I don’t understand. It is confusing — JFK: Catholic. Joe Biden: Catholic. Speaker (Nancy) Pelosi: Catholic.”

On Friday, Bill repeated the “N” word:

“Chuck Schumer said Democrats won’t make Barrett’s faith an issue, but they should because being nuts is relevant.”

Better judges, in Maher’s view: atheists.

“Atheists actually make better judges because we don’t have to work to separate church and state. We’re not torn between rational decision-making and what it says in the old book of Jewish fairy tales.”

He colored Amy, essentially, thoughtless:

“She’s been groomed since birth to overturn Roe v. Wade. She’s like the Terminator: a robot programmed to fulfill one task. Except she wasn’t sent from the future, she was sent from the past.”

Of course, Christianity is the largest religion in the world. Not just in the past, but in the present.

Regardless, as for Bill’s ridicule of Judge Barrett’s faith, while America endures more contentious hearings, I’d say there’s much, much more where that came from.

The HBO man asked a pointed question:

“[We (atheists and agonistics) are] 26% of the country. … Where’s our voice on the Supreme Court?”

If I had to guess, Bill, I’d say your time is rapidly approaching..
