Bernie and AOC Demand We Honor Justice Ginsburg's 'Wish' -- but Schumer's Words Don't Help Them

For the past 24 hours, many on the Left have been crying out in anguish after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and President Donald Trump signaled they aren’t about to slow-walk a nominee to fill the Supreme Court seat left vacant by the death of Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Friday. One of the oft-repeated talking points/narratives has been the notion that it was Ginsburg’s “dying wish” that her seat not be filled until a new president takes office in January.

Former President Barack Obama even included the narrative in an entire Medium tribute he wrote to RBG, as RedState’s Jennifer Van Laar reported late last night.

That doubtless emboldened radical leftists within the Democrat Party. Because look who’s now joining in the outcry: two-time, Democrat presidential nomination loser, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and America’s Bartender™, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

The Hill reported that Bernie released a statement Friday, which read in part:

“Unfortunately, Sen. McConnell has decided to go against Justice Ginsburg’s dying wishes and is cementing a shameful legacy of brazen hypocrisy.

The right thing to do here is clear, and Senate Republicans know it. We should let voters decide. Period.”

The Hill explained why Bernie and others on the Left are so peeved:

The criticism against McConnell came after the Republican leader said in a statement released hours after Ginsburg’s death was announced that “President Trump’s nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate.”

Not to be outdone, AOC released a video echoing the “dying wish” line.

She said, in part: (emphasis added):

“Mitch McConnell sent out a statement tonight, and….the very last, dying wish of RBG was that her vacancy not be filled until the new president takes office in January. That was her dying wish.

Tonight, Mitch McConnell, publicly, the night that she…the night of her passing — he couldn’t wait 24 hours — issued a statement saying that he was going to give Trump a vote, in violation of her dying wish.

People can say, “How appalling.” People can say, “This is horrible,” etcetera. But we know who this man is. We know who this man is. This is a man who does not care about a dying woman’s final wish, clearly.”

Putting aside the dubious legality of a “dying woman’s final wish,” outside the plot of a daytime soap opera, my colleague Scott Hounsell shared something rather inconvenient in his piece, “Chuck Schumer Tweets About Replacing Ginsburg Before Offering Condolences.” Schumer brought this on himself, by his own actions.

So, I think we can properly say this: “Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) publicly, the night of her passing — he couldn’t wait 24 hours — wrote a tweet saying we need to wait until after the presidential election to fill the seat. He didn’t even bother to mention the late Justice or send condolences to her loved ones.

People said, “How appalling.” People also said, “This is horrible.” But we know who Chuck Schumer is.

And we know who Barack Obama, Bernie Sanders, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are, too. They’re not fooling anyone with this.
