A gunman opened fire at a birthday party in Colorado, slaying six adults before killing himself Sunday, police said.

The shooting happened just after midnight in a mobile home park on the east side of Colorado Springs, police said.

Officers arrived at a trailer to find six dead adults and a man with serious injuries who died later at a hospital, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported.

The New York Times also shared details of the horrific event:

Police officers responded shortly after midnight to a shooting at the Canterbury Mobile Home Park, where they found six adults dead and one man with “serious injuries,” the Colorado Springs police said. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The police said that a birthday party was being held for one of the victims in a home in the park and that “friends, family and children were gathered inside” when the shooting occurred.

The gunman, who was not publicly identified, was “a boyfriend of one of the female victims,” the police said. He drove to the home, walked inside “and began shooting people at the party before taking his own life,” the police said.

Mercifully, the children present at the party were left unharmed, police told reporters, and they are now safe with relatives, according to NYT, adding:

The names of the victims and the gunman will be released by the El Paso County coroner, the authorities said.

Colorado Spring Police Chief Vince Niski made these poignant remarks at the press conference, the Daily Mail reported:

“Words fall short to describe the tragedy that took place this morning,” said Colorado Springs Police Chief Vince Niski.

“This is something you hope never happens in your own community, in the place that you call home,” he said.

“When these types of unspeakable acts happen, there is nothing that can be done to fully rebuild what was lost or replace those who are no longer with us.”

Colorado Governor Jared Polis made a statement, as well, referencing that today is Mother’s Day:

Gov. Jared Polis of Colorado said the shooting, on Mother’s Day, was “devastating, especially as many of us are spending the day celebrating the women in our lives who have made us the people we are today.”

“Multiple lives were taken today by this terrible act of violence,” he said. “Families torn apart, and at a birthday party no less.”

At this hour, authorities say the man’s motive for the shooting is unknown.
