Watch: James Corden Literally Stops Traffic in Fun, Musical Skit

If you grew up in a family like mine that loved musicals, then this story might float your boat. Even if you didn’t, it’s likely most readers are familiar with “Cinderella” — the classic Disney animated fairy tale from 1950 we all grew up with, whatever our generation.

Now, there’s a new musical reimagining of the story, and the people behind it just found a creative way to get the word out — by literally stopping L.A. traffic and putting on a musical skit with some of the movie’s stars on Friday.

The new, live-action version stars singer Camila Cabello in the title role, actor/singer Billy Porter, “Frozen’s” Idina Menzel, and… late night host James Corden?

Yes, as viewers of CBS’ “The Late, Late Show” might know, the British guy who replaced the Scottish guy (what’s up with that?) as the show’s host in 2015 is an award-winning Broadway singer and actor, too. Even people who don’t regularly tune in might be familiar with the viral “Carpool Karaoke” segment. But for my money, this marathon skit of “22 Musicals In 12 Minutes,” with Lin-Manuel Miranda and Emily Blunt (whom Corden co-starred with in the movie musical “Into The Woods”), is the best.

And as you might have figured out, one of the other, musical segments is called “Crosswalk the Musical.” I’ve seen at least three or four of these on his show. This one, for “Frozen 2,” which of course featured Menzel as her animated character “Elsa,” is particularly charming:

Menzel and Corden’s “Cinderella” co-star Billy Porter is no slouch in the singing department, either. But, if you heard his vocals on last year’s Shapeshifters dance hit, you already know that. The song, “Finally Ready,” was one of my faves to “discover” earlier this year via a Twitch deejay‘s house music stream. (I wrote about music on Twitch here, in case you missed it.)

Porter also belted out a tune from the musical “Gypsy” on Corden’s show back in 2019 — during a commercial break, as it turned out, in an impromptu “Broadway Karaoke” segment.

So, when can viewers expect to see this new skit? According to celeb website Just Jared, Idina Menzel is scheduled to appear on Corden’s show Monday. So, the writer made an educated guess that the skit will air during her appearance.

Makes sense. The movie is set to be released on Amazon Prime next week (September 3), according to IMDb.

Sure looks like fun — though as my colleague Susie Moore said, the congestion-weary drivers who got stopped in already snail-paced L.A. traffic might not share in my appreciation.
