'This Is Spinal Tap' Is Getting a Sequel

They're back! And as awesomely clueless as ever.

Everyone's favorite, fake has-been metal band Spinal Tap, along with director Rob Reiner, created the mockumentary genre with 1984's "This Is Spinal Tap." Now, they are set to give us an update on their perpetually doomed quest for relevance in a sequel, according to a new report from the entertainment industry site, Deadline.

In an interview with the RHLSTP with Richard Herring podcast, Reiner spilled the juicy details on when filming is expected to start, and the real-life rock stars/musicians (Paul McCartney, Elton John, Garth Brooks, and "a few other surprises") who will be making cameos in the comedy.

Reiner confirmed they will join original cast members Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, and Christopher Guest, who reprise their roles as the band's lead singer and guitarist David St. Hubbins, bass player Derek Smalls, and guitarist Nigel Tufnel. Filming is scheduled to begin in late February 2024.

Reiner told Deadline in a May 2022 interview that he, McKean, Shearer, and Guest are hatching the sequel to coincide with a special date:

The plan is to do a sequel that comes out on the 40th anniversary of the original film and I can tell you hardly a day goes by without someone saying, why don’t you do another one? For so many years, we said, ‘nah.’ It wasn’t until we came up with the right idea how to do this. You don’t want to just do it, to do it. You want to honor the first one and push it a little further with the story,

Sounds promising. One of the cool aspects about the original film wasn't so much the star power in the supporting cast, but the then-known actors and actresses who later became bigger stars. The two who immediately spring to mind are record company publicist Bobbi Flekman (played by Fran Drescher), and a frustrated mime/waiter (played by Billy Crystal). I wonder if either of them will be one of those "surprises" the director teased about in the interview.
