'We're Out of Room': NYC Mayor Adams Says Illegal Immigrants Will Soon Have to Sleep Rough

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has declared that New York City is finally "out of room."

In an interview with Fox News, Adams admitted that the city had reached the end of the line in accommodating illegal immigrants as thousands of people continue to arrive each month after crossing the border illegally.

Adams explained:

Our hearts are endless, but our resources are not. It's not like New York is not saying we are not a city of immigrants. We are. We have a rich history of immigrants, but we can't take the global problem and it become our problem. That is unfair to New Yorkers, and is unfair to migrants.

...

We're not just saying we're out of room as a soundbite. We're out of room, literally. People are going to be eventually sleeping on the streets.

However, the Democratic mayor admitted that he finds himself in a difficult situation given that New York is both a sanctuary state and also requires the government to provide shelter.

When asked whether he supported simply shutting the door, he responded:

The law states that we cannot notify I.C.E. I cannot break the law and enforce the law. I can't deport. I can't stop people from coming in, repeated criminal behavior, I can't report to I.C.E. for deportation. So there's certain things I can't do.

He added that challenges to the right-to-shelter rule remain in progress as the legislation was not devised for such an unusual situation.

The large majority of those arriving in New York have illegally crossed the southern border into Texas. However, Texas Governor Greg Abbott argued that given that Texans do not support the open border policy of the Democratic Party, they should not be required to handle the burden of thousands of daily arrivals.

As a result, he has implemented a policy of sending illegals on buses to a variety of sanctuary states and cities, most notably New York, Chicago, and Denver.

Abbott has also repeatedly stated that this policy will continue until the Biden administration fully secures the border and prevents the ongoing flow of millions of illegals entering the country every year.

"Texas has transported over 102,000 migrants to sanctuary cities," he wrote on the X platform last month. "Overwhelmed Texas border towns should not bear the brunt of Biden’s open border policies. Our transportation mission will continue until Biden secures the border."

Adams, meanwhile, has previously warned that the issue of illegal immigration could destroy the city as people know it and that he does not have a solution.

"[Mass immigration] will destroy New York City... The city we knew, we are about to lose," Adams said at a town hall meeting last year.  "Never in my life have I had a problem that I did not see an ending to. I don't see an ending to this."
