Twitter owner and Tesla CEO Elon Musk dropped a bombshell early Sunday morning, announcing at 12:04 AM EST that the platform will replace its current bird logo with an “X” logo. He was seemingly on fire, posting all sorts of stuff, but this one drew the most attention:

It would appear that he wants to completely rebrand the site, which he acquired to great fanfare for $44 billion in October 2022:

Twitter owner Elon Musk announced early Sunday morning that the platform will replace its current bird logo with an “X” logo.

This comes after Musk changed the name of Twitter Inc. to X Corp. earlier this year.

In a tweet posted shortly after midnight, Musk said the social media giant will soon move on from the Twitter brand, including “all the birds.”

“And soon we shall bid adieu to the twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds,” he wrote.

Musk then tweeted a possible new logo, though he didn’t explicitly say so:

Elon has been aggressive in making changes to the social media platform since he took over, and although not everyone has been happy with the results, it appears he’s far from done.

Since Musk took over Twitter in October, the platform has faced criticism over its controversial changes, including verification for paying Twitter Blue subscribers instead of the previous requirement of users having to show they are notable in news, entertainment or elsewhere. Twitter recently began paying social media influencers who meet engagement criteria.

Users had questions:

Or maybe the new title of the site will be Deus X; who knows?

I am a late Twitter convert and have only in the last year and a half learned to enjoy the exchange of ideas and back-and-forth that occurs regularly on the platform. But even though I was late to the party, I have been a big fan of Musk’s efforts to stop the rampant censorship that occurred under the previous regime— often at the behest of the Biden administration.

But I’m not clear here whether the billionaire mogul is just on a Saturday-night/Sunday-morning tweetstorm that is actually designed to troll us or if he’s truly announcing the new direction of Twitter.

Elon has proved he’s an expert troll before, and it’s possible he’s just punking us. But he says the change could happen as soon as Sunday:

Musk has proven to be anything but predictable, so we shall see where this story goes. He promised to bring change to the influential social media platform, and he’s certainly done that (and often caused liberal heads to explode).

Whatever one thinks of the quirky billionaire, one thing you can’t call him is boring.
