Club-goers are saying that the driver had been thrown out of the club earlier:

Witnesses said the assailant had been thrown out of the nightclub for being too intoxicated moments before, leading him to get into his car and mount the curb in a horror episode.

One witness said that the driver got into his car and made a U-turn—then purposefully accelerated across the sidewalk and into other clubgoers.

Warning: The video is graphic and tough to watch. Toward the end, you can see people apparently beating the suspect even after cops had handcuffed him:

Original report:

As we reported earlier, a car plowed into a crowd outside an East Hollywood nightclub in the early hours of Saturday morning in a horrific scene that left 30 people injured, with seven of those listed as critical. One person was shot.

Now, more information is coming out, and authorities announced that the act appeared to have been intentional and that it was the driver himself who was shot and beaten by an angry crowd.

A man was dragged from his car by enraged bystanders and shot after police said he intentionally plowed a vehicle into a crowd in Los Angeles, leaving seven people critically injured and at least 23 others hurt outside a nightclub early Saturday morning.

Cameras in the area are still being canvassed, but the incident appears to have been intentional, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The LAPD said they were unable to determine at this time whether the suspect was under the influence:

"When officers arrived, they found the driver being assaulted by bystanders and determined he had sustained a gunshot wound," the LAPD said in an update.

LAPD Sgt. Travis Ward said the driver was shot after the collision, transported to the hospital and taken into surgery. For this reason, he said, the LAPD was unable to determine whether the driver was intoxicated.

Meanwhile, the shooter is still on the loose:

The LAPD described the person who shot the driver as "a Hispanic male, approximately 5 feet, 9 inches tall, 180 pounds, bald, wearing a blue jersey, and possibly armed with a silver revolver." The man fled the scene on foot and was last seen going westbound from Vermont Avenue, the LAPD said.

Los Angeles  Mayor Karen Bass issued a statement thanking law enforcement for their efforts during the tragedy:

The hearts of all Angelenos are with East Hollywood this morning and those impacted — a full investigation will be conducted into what happened.

Although the LAPD  did not officially confirm the name of the nightclub, a venue called The Vermont Hollywood issued a statement on Instagram indicating that it occurred outside their doors.
