I was assured just a few short months ago that behavior such as this was not only deeply damaging to the country, but that it also reflected so negatively on a candidate that anyone voting for them should be questioned. We can also backtrack to 2016, where the “lock her up” chants were roundly criticized as awful and immoral, a threat to our democracy even.
Those rules apparently don’t apply to Bernie Sanders and Ilhan Omar.

Keep in mind, the “send her back” chants that recently emanated from a Trump rally managed to stay CNN’s top story for about six days. The “lock her up” chants involving Hillary Clinton are still chastised to this day. Pearls were certainly clutched.
Locking Trump up is perfectly cool to chant about though. Not a single major news outlet even saw it fit to report on this latest happening and when it happened a week prior at the world series, you’d be hard pressed to find any liberal condemnation at all. I believe Chris Coons wrote an op-ed admonishing the chants and that was about it.
Here’s a nice reminder of how the hypocrisy being displayed here.

So much for that. I guess Bernie Sanders, who’s leading two of the four early states and second nationally in many polls, isn’t a “serious” candidate. I also suppose Ilhan Omar isn’t a serious Democrat now. Conversely, John Harwood is just an enormous hack, as I’ve laid out in the past.
Here’s my personal opinion on this. If people at an event want to chant something, let them. Who cares? It’s not like our politics aren’t already a dumpster fire. There’s no line of decency being crossed that wasn’t obliterated back when George W. Bush was being burned in effigy. If Trump fans want to chant lock her up, whatever. If Bernie fans want to chant lock him up, whatever. It’s not something I’d do, but it’s hardly the most pressing issue in this country.
That really leaves the main point here being just how unbelievably hypocritical the mainstream media are. When Trump didn’t immediately shut down chants of “send her back,” you got an avalanche of op-eds and cable news spots talking about how awful he and his supporters are. When the shoe is on the other foot, it’s either total silence or desperate attempts to somehow explain how it’s different when Democrats do it.
If you are going to pronounce the death of our democracy over one side doing things, perhaps think about maintaining some level of consistency when the other side does the same thing. Just a thought.
