Michael Bloomberg didn’t have a terrible debate last night, and it was certainly better than the dumpster fire performance he gave in his first appearance. Yet, it looks like the bloom is off the Bloomberg rose and I’m not sure there’s any saving it.

Once again, most of his competition decided to attack him instead of the actual frontrunner and it’s left Bloomberg unable to overcome the false perceptions his ads have otherwise been building. Bloomberg is not charismatic, he’s not relatable, and he’s pretty much like what he portrays himself to be.

That is adding up to a campaign that looks to be burning down.

Silver also listed out the latest polling in the Super Tuesday states and none of it portends a coming Bloomberg surge. In fact, it shows Bernie in pretty good shape, with no blowout developing, but certainly enough of a win for him to head into the convention with a plurality.

What this all means is that Bloomberg could actually help Bernie by staying in the race after Joe Biden likely wins South Carolina on Saturday. He’s going to stomp all over any opportunity for Biden to gain momentum and knock Sanders down a peg. In short, Bloomberg’s ego may cost the Democrats any chance of stopping of him.

There’s some serious irony in that, as Bloomberg has portrayed himself as the last, best chance to save the Democratic ticket from being saddled with a communist. That’s clearly not true anymore though. Even nationally, Bloomberg is cratering, down in the low teens and well behind several other candidates.

In the end, Bloomberg is going to have burned through at least half a billion dollars to not even come close to winning the nomination. And by doing so, he’s going to have wasted a ton of money he could have otherwise used to help a Democrat in the general.

The biggest winner in all this turns out to be Donald Trump. I have a feeling that wasn’t Bloomberg’s plan.
