Apparently, having a police-free “autonomous” zone that led to a six-block area of Seattle having the highest murder rate in the world didn’t teach Seattle’s leadership anything. The city council has now voted to cut 50% of the funding from the Seattle Police Department.

This will assuredly not have any negative consequences.

Cutting a police department’s budget by over 50% is essentially dooming it to lax enforcement. In almost all these major cities, shortages of officers is a problem. There isn’t money to spare here. In fact, they need more money and manpower if the goal is to actually lower crime rates. Seattle is basically throwing a middle finger up at its most vulnerable populations and letting them know that woke performance art is more important than their safety.

Note the ridiculous idea of removing Seattle’s dispatchers from police control. That’s obviously a hat tip to the idea that dispatchers are sending police after minorities to target them. I guess they want a dispatch center that judges calls based on inter-sectional race theory. I’m sure when someone innocent gets killed because a dispatcher judged their call might put a criminal aggressor’s life in danger from the police, that’ll go over really well.

Actually, sarcasm aside, it might actually go over well. The people behind these pushes at the governmental level are mostly white, liberal elites who figure they’ll never have to deal with the consequences of their virtue signaling. They live in the better neighborhoods and fully expect the police will still protect them. I see little evidence they are moved by any objective data regarding the protection of citizens, and while many say these moves will drive people from these cities or that they will vote differently, I’m not so sure. Andrew Cuomo, even as crime skyrockets in his state and his handling of the coronavirus has objectively been shown to be the worst in the country, is enjoying his highest approval ratings ever. Those who vote for these politicians appear to be gluttons for punishment with no punch to the face they aren’t willing to tolerate.

I’m a cynic on the idea of a great awakening happening at this point. Hopefully, I’m proven wrong.
