Panic Time: Glenn Youngkin Surges Ahead of Terry McAuliffe Before Tuesday's Vote

Big news tonight involving the Virginia governor’s race. For the first time since the campaign began, Glenn Youngkin has surged ahead of Terry McAuliffe in the RealClearPolitics average of polls. That’s due to a new survey out from Fox News getting added to the mix which shows Youngkin with a commanding lead.

As RedState previously reported, things were already neck and neck, but these latest numbers could show Youngkin breaking through in a big way.

McAuliffe’s campaign has been floundering for a while, but it truly jumped the shark this week when he brought in a slew of non-Virginian politicians, including Barack Obama and Joe Biden. The former spent his time trashing parents concerned for their children as right-wing conspiracy theorists fighting a fake culture war. Meanwhile, the current president just said the word “Trump” over and over. But perhaps the most disgusting attack was comparing Youngkin to those who entered the Capitol Building on January 6th.

Yet, if these numbers hold, it shows that voters are not buying any of it. Those with school-age children are shown to be breaking heavily for Youngkin after McAuliffe has continually insulted them. Meanwhile, bad economic news today, which was just a continuation of months of inflation and sub-par reports, likely isn’t helping the Democrat either.

Now, the caveat here is that polls could always be wrong. But, the last two governor’s races have seen the polling indicate a heavy bias toward the Democrat candidate vs. the actual results, not the Republican. So if the polls are wrong, it would be a new failure, unlike one we’ve seen in the last several cycles and in the opposite direction.

Regardless, I think we’ve reached the point where you’d rather be in Glenn Youngkin’s position right now compared to Terry McAuliffe’s. That’s crazy and would have been unthinkable to utter two months ago, but that’s what the numbers currently show. Turnout will be everything. Republicans have to come out gangbusters on Tuesday, especially in the more rural, red areas of the state. If those areas overperform, it could make a difference and overcome average turnout in NOVA.

This is all setting up to be a very exciting finish. If Youngkin pulls this off, it’s full speed ahead into 2022, and you’ll be able to cut the tension on the left with a knife.
