Hunter Biden Contempt of Congress Resolution Passes Committee, Setting Up a New Showdown

After much theatrics, including Hunter Biden storming out of a hearing, the House Judiciary Committee finally held the president's son in contempt of Congress on Wednesday. That came after he ignored a congressional subpoena that required he appear for a deposition conducted by the House Oversight Committee, which is investigating the corruption of the Biden family.

Despite another Capitol Hill stunt from Hunter Biden, the House Judiciary Committee approved a resolution calling for the president's son to be held in contempt of Congress for brazenly defying a congressional subpoena requiring him to sit for a deposition with House lawmakers.

In the 23-14 party-line vote, members of the Judiciary Committee cleared another hurdle in the House GOP's pursuit to hold President Joe Biden accountable for a laundry list of alleged crimes, in this instance by seeking answers from one of the central players in the Biden family business.

As RedState reported, Rep. James Comer released the resolution to hold Hunter Biden in contempt on Monday. Now that it has passed out of committee, it will have to stand up to a full vote on the House floor, though it is expected to pass without much hassle. It is undeniable that Hunter Biden did commit contempt of Congress by ignoring the subpoena, and it is likely several Democrats will cross the aisle to vote for the resolution.

Private citizens have no right to ignore a subpoena because they don't like the terms. In this case, Hunter Biden said he would only testify in public, which is not his choice. Normal operation in the House is for the subject of an investigation to have a closed-door disposition before allowing them to participate in a public hearing.

With all of that said, the move to hold Hunter Biden in contempt will set up a new showdown. Will AG Merrick Garland actually ignore something as blatantly lawless as ignoring a congressional subpoena after his DOJ prosecuted Steve Bannon and others for the same thing? One would hope not, especially given the DOJ is already pursuing other charges against Hunter Biden.

Still, nothing would surprise me at this point. If the president's son is allowed to escape the legal ramifications of being held in contempt of Congress, it would represent yet another scandal for Joe Biden. Given his current standing in the presidential race, that would be ill-advised, but no one has ever accused the current president of being smart.
