Last night’s State of the Union address was filled with many emotional moments with one, in particular, being President Donald Trump’s mentioning of a man slain by an illegal immigrant.
Rocky Jones was shot eight times by an illegal immigrant in Tulare County at a gas station in 2018 at the age of 51. The killer, Gustavo Garcia, had a long rap sheet but was living in California thanks to the sanctuary city laws passed by Democrats. Garcia killed others as well just days after being arrested for being under the influence and set free.
Trump invited Rocky’s brother, Jody Jones, to the State of the Union speech and honored he and his brother, promising to punish states that impliment laws that allow this kind of thing to happen. It was an emotional moment for Jones who sat teary eyed in the gallery.
“Jody, our hearts weep for your loss,” said the president. “And, we will not rest until you have justice.”
Then, after Trump was done giving his speech, Pelosi took it and ripped it up. For Jones and everyone who was honored that night, Pelosi just ripped up more than a speech she didn’t like, she ripped them up.
“It felt like she ripped our hearts out,” Jones told Fox News during an interview after the fact.
“Everybody there. All of the guests. We couldn’t believe it,” he added.
Jones said he hoped that Pelosi would look beyond her dislike of one man and think about everyone else in the future.
“I don’t care how you feel about somebody,” he continued. “That was probably the most disrespectful thing I have ever seen in my life. Because, when she did that, it just tore us up. We couldn’t believe it.”
Vice President Mike Pence also weighed in on the ripping up of Trump’s speech, calling it a “new low.”
“It’s clear the contrast here is a president who spent an hour and a half making a speech about America, and Nancy Pelosi, in the final moments, tried to make it about her,” said Pence.
