Liz Warren’s Tribe Leadership in Hot Federal Water

Sen. Elizabeth Warren is the “it” Democratic presidential candidate of the moment. She’s climbing in the polls, drawing huge crowds and wowing them in New Hampshire.

Warren needs to be careful. As President Donald Trump has boasted, “I did the Pocahontas thing. I hit her really hard and it looked like she was down and out, but that was too long ago. I should have waited. But don’t worry. We will revive it. And it can be revived. And it can be done very quickly.”

One way the “Pocahontas thing” is going to keep coming back is the ongoing saga of Liz Warren’s Indian casino scheme in Massachusetts, which we have covered extensively.

Essentially, one way Warren has attempted to inoculate herself from the “Pocahontas thing” is to help the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe obtain federal approval of a casino in Taunton, Mass. The effort has put her in league with embattled tribe leadership, lobbyists with trouble pasts, and Genting, a Malaysian consortium under investigation in its home country.

Things, somehow, have gotten worse. According to the Cape Cod Times:

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe’s chief financial officer and his predecessor have been subpoenaed in recent weeks, according to sources familiar with the matter and documentation provided to the Times.

Treasurer Gordon Harris and former Treasurer Robert Hendricks were issued subpoenas, prompting Tribal Council, the tribe’s executive decision-making body, to hire legal counsel for them, according to meeting minutes provided by council member Aaron Tobey Jr.

The minutes mention subpoenas without elaboration, and Tobey declined to discuss the nature of the court orders.

It’s not immediately apparent why the officials are under subpoena but, “a robocall that circulated within the tribal community in June alleged that $250 million of the money handled by the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Gaming Authority is unaccounted for,” the Cape Cod Times reports.

If true, that $250 million of unaccounted for cash could only have come from Genting, from whom the tribe has borrowed half-a-billion dollars.

This is a ticking time bomb for Warren, who has stuck her neck out pretty far for the tribe. And she’s not alone among Massachusetts Democrats. Watch the video RedState obtained of Rep. Joseph Kennedy III championing the leadership of the Wampanoag at a Nov. 14, 2018 rally:

The bill Kennedy is referencing in the video is the same bill that Warren is pushing – to give the tribe, financed by Genting, a tax free casino. Kennedy has announced his intention to reclaim the family’s seat in the U.S. Senate. Will the blossoming Wampanoag leadership scandal damage his efforts, as well as Warren’s.
