At long last, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) feels the heat from Americans who are disgusted with her anti-Semitic rhetoric. According to the Los Angeles Daily News, hundreds of protesters lined the sidewalks outside of a Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) fundraising event where Omar was scheduled to speak on Saturday, to capture the Congresswoman’s attention. This event was the fourth annual Valley Banquet, titled “Advancing Justice: Empowering Valley Muslims” and took place at The Woodland Hills Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

Protestors shouted “Burn the Quran!,” “Ilhan Omar, go to hell!” and “Shame on you, terrorists!” and many waved Israeli flags. They carried signs that said, “Radical Islam is the New Nazi,” “Remove Omar Now. Anti-American. Anti-Semite,” and “Reject Omar’s Bigotry.”

One protestor told NBC News, “I’m here because Ilhan Omar represents the worst of our country that we can possibly (inaudible). The lack of assimilation is un-American and the anti-Semitism coming from her mouth is despicable.”

Curiously, Los Angeles Daily News reporter Ariella Plachta filmed the crowd applauding a bridal party which left the hotel before Omar arrived, as well as a sparse group of her supporters, but failed to capture the crowd’s condemnation of the defiant, unapologetic lawmaker.

An Omar supporter told NBC that it was “enormously disappointing to see this vitriol in the streets. They clearly have ideas about America that I don’t agree with. America is the great melting pot and we all belong here.”

An NBC News reporter said the Los Angeles Police were doing a good job of keeping the crowd under control. She said there had been one “altercation” between a protestor and a supporter, but that no arrests had been made.

Plachta reported that “far right (and conspiracy theorist) star Laura Loomer showed up. She tweeted, “Just spoke w Loomer and her minions, who called me fake news for not saying that CAIR supports Hamas. Loomer said she purchased a room at the Hilton to “observe the event and participate in the protest,” but that she got kicked out.”

We can be sure the protestors will be labeled as racists and Islamophobes. But I, for one, am glad to see the disrespectful and ungrateful Congresswoman from Minnesota receive some pushback.
