Too Little Too Late: Kamala Harris Goes to Guatemala to Tell Migrants Not to Travel to the Southern Border

Vice President Kamala Harris traveled all the way to Guatemala to tell people not to come to the southern border. She issued a message to potential migrants considering making the trek in an attempt to gain entry into the United States: You will not succeed. However, as much as some might like to say “better late than never,” the expression rings hollow in this particular case.

During a joint press conference with Guatemala President Alejandro Giammattei on Monday, Harris said: “I want to emphasize that the goal of our work is to help Guatemalans find hope at home.”

The Vice President continued:

“At the same time, I want to be clear to folks in this region who are thinking about making that dangerous trek to the United States-Mexico border: Do not come.”

Harris affirmed that the U.S. “will continue to enforce our laws and secure our border, adding, “And I believe if you come to our border, you will be turned back.”

This is how inept the Biden administration is, folks. The Vice President of the United States of America can’t even say definitively that migrants who attempt to cross the border will be turned back. The best she can muster is that she “believes” these folks will not make it into the country.

Who’s running this place, anyway?

When Harris arrived in Guatemala, she was greeted by a sea of Guatemalans who gave her a sincere invitation to go back to her country because they clearly did not want her there. RedState’s Nick Arama wrote:

When she landed in Guatemala, however, she was also met by protesters who didn’t seem on board with her claimed effort to want to “help” the region so that people wouldn’t be flooding illegally into the United States. The protesters included members of Society in Action, who said they were pro-life and anti-leftist agenda as well as members of the Veterans Association.

Giammattei declared that the country would create “returnee centers” where its citizens would be accepted after being sent home from the United States.

I am very proud that this is my first foreign trip as vice president,” Harris gushed. “It is a reflection of the priority that President Biden placed on this region.”

Harris and Giammattei have had at least one phone call prior to their Monday meeting. On Tuesday, the vice president is set to meet with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and will likely repeat her weak contention that migrants attempting to enter the United States might possibly/kinda/sorta be turned away – probably.

When President Joe Biden tapped Harris as border czar in March, they insisted that her role would be to address the “root causes” of the influx in migrants traveling to the southern border. She is supposedly going to accomplish this by trying to improve the countries from which the majority of these individuals come so that they will not be motivated to come to the U.S. It has been 76 days since her role was announced and she has yet to be seen anywhere close to anything resembling the border despite invitations from officials serving in border states. Moreover, the Biden administration has repeatedly attempted to deflect the blame for the current migrant crisis that the nation is experiencing. They have blamed everything from climate change to the Orange Man what is bad. Still, it is clear that Biden’s rhetoric over the past couple of years and the moves he made shortly after taking office were equivalent to turning on a green light while rolling out a red carpet and playing Gene Wilder’s “Pure Imagination.”

To make matters worse, it is also apparent that this administration has no real plan for securing the border and ensuring that people enter the country legally. At this point, it appears the nation will have to wait until a competent president is in office before we see a respite at the border.
