Rep. Ocasio-Cortez Came up With a Rather Creative Way to Blame Afghanistan on Trump

In the latest display of desperation over President Joe Biden’s botched Afghanistan withdrawal, everyone’s favorite socialist sweetheart Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) joined the chorus of leftists trying to blame the chaos in the region on former President Donald Trump. However, AOC managed to break the mold with a rather creative interpretation of the matter.

During a Thursday appearance with Joy Reid on MSNBC, Ocasio-Cortez waxed eloquent about how Trump’s “extremely xenophobic and racist immigration policies” contributed to the botched evacuation effort. During the conversation, Reid noted the decrease in the number of refugees America was taking in since President George W. Bush was in office. She said:

We used to have an annual ceiling of 231,000 people under Ronald Reagan. No moderate figure there. George W. Bush 70,000. Under President Obama, it was 85,000. Under Trump 15,000. We have had former members of the administration come forward and talk about Stephen Miller, eventual essentially waging rhetorical war against the idea of Afghans coming here. We have seen people on another network call them invaders…So there is another side of this.

Ocasio-Cortez responded by nonsensically blaming Trump for the Biden administration’s failure to evacuate the United States’ Afghan allies from the country. She claimed the Trump administration wasn’t getting them out of the country by issuing Special Immigrant Visas (SIV).

Ocasio-Cortez said, “It is no secret that the Trump administration carried out extremely xenophobic and racist immigration policies” and asked what the “Trump administration [was] doing when they were not pre-evacuating out under the SIV program” when it concerned the nation’s Afghan allies. She concluded:

It is because of Stephen Miller and his rhetoric and the xenophobia of the Trump administration that there were many thousands of Afghans we could have worked on evacuating much earlier than even this year.

The lawmaker was trying to deflect responsibility from Biden’s ineptitude by repeating a lie told by national security advisor Jake Sullivan earlier this week. During a press conference, he said:

When we took office in January, the Trump administration had not processed a single Special Immigrant Visa since March of 2020 — in nearly a year.

However, the Daily Caller revealed Sullivan wasn’t quite being honest when he made his remarks:

While no Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) applicants were interviewed at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul from March 2020 through the end of the Trump administration due to COVID-19, quarterly reports from the State Department show that thousands of Afghan SIV applications were processed and issued in that timeframe.

Even further, between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, 2020, 1,321 SIVs were issued to Afghans according to the State Department. In other words, the SIV process was halted due to the COVID-19 outbreak, but this does not mean the Trump administration had not been issuing visas for our allies. Sullivan’s lie was so egregious even CNN’s fact-checkers corrected it. Perhaps AOC should have read the article before making those comments. Then again, even if she knew she was uttering falsehoods, would that have stopped her?

This is only the latest in a series of attempts on the part of Democrats to deflect attention from the fact that President Biden is presiding over what will be a stain on America’s history. The situation has become so chaotic it has eclipsed what happened in Saigon at the end of Vietnam. No amount of spin or passing blame will deflect from how horribly the president handled the withdrawal effort. But it won’t stop them from trying, right?
