Ilhan Omar Bashes Israel but Remains Silent on Hamas

In a flurry of posts on social media, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MI) slammed Israel for retaliating against Hamas after the terrorist organization launched a surprise attack, killing hundreds of Israeli civilians. So far, the violence has left 1,000 Israelis dead along with at least 14 Americans. About 2,700 have been wounded during the fighting.

But Omar didn’t appear to care about those trifling details. She took to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, to criticize Israel after it announced it was laying siege to the Gaza Strip, the territory controlled by Hamas.

The lawmaker noted that Gaza’s population is made up of “mostly children” who “live in poverty.”

Omar continued, arguing that “as the world is condemning Hamas’s attacks, we must also oppose an Israeli military response that has already taken the lives of hundreds of Palestinians, including nearly two dozen children.”

Nobody can deny that innocent people on both sides are meeting tragic ends because of this conflict. No decent person can dismiss the killing of innocent children, whether they are Israeli or Palestinian – unless, of course, you happen to be Ilhan Omar, who had little criticism for Hamas, the entity that started this conflict in the first place. Indeed, she had nothing to say about the fact that the terrorist group is not only victimizing Israelis but also Palestinians by perpetuating the violence in the region.

“Palestinians have few recourses for justice and accountability,” Omar noted after referring to Israel’s occupation of the West Bank as policies that “meet the definition of apartheid.”

Omar also falsely claimed that the Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant referred to all Palestinians as “human animals” when discussing the siege. This was a lie. Gallant was clearly referring to members of Hamas, who executed vicious attacks against Israeli civilians. Indeed, IDF forces reportedly found the bodies of babies who had been beheaded.

Omar’s comments raise an important question.

If her passion for the Palestinian cause is as deep as she would have us think, then why is there no fire and fury for Hamas, which systematically oppresses those living under its rule in the Gaza Strip? By continuing to engage in violent activities that provoke retaliation from Israel, they are causing these people to suffer far more than is necessary. Her relative silence seems to imply that Hamas’ killing of Israeli men, women, and children is not as big of a deal. If Omar and her ilk actually cared about the Palestinians, they would have as much furor for groups like Hamas as they do for Israel’s government.

Omar is not the only one who has exhibited this brand of hypocrisy. Rep. Cori Bush (D-MI) suggested cutting funding to Israel – but not the Palestinians ruled by Hamas. The United Nations has condemned Israel’s siege of Gaza for violating international law but had little to say about Hamas’ apparent war crimes.

There is an agenda here, and it has absolutely nothing to do with helping the Palestinian refugees. Unfortunately, those are the people who will suffer the most over the long term.
