Israel is about to turn up the heat even more on Hamas. In response to Hamas’ brutal assault on Israel on October 7, Israel’s security agency, Shin Bet, has established a new unit specifically to target and eliminate members of Hamas who were involved in the initial attack, which led to the current war in Israel and Gaza.

This unit could be a game-changer when it comes to dismantling Hamas as an organization.

The Mossad and Shin Bet have reportedly formed a special operations center tasked with tracking down and killing members of the Hamas commando unit that led the Gaza-ruling terror group’s deadly onslaught in southern Israel on October 7.

According to the Ynet news site, the unit will be named after the World War I-era Jewish underground organization “Nili,” an acronym for a Hebrew phrase which translates as “the Eternal One of Israel will not lie.”

The report said the command center’s goal will be to take out all the Nukbha gunmen who were involved in the surprise assault two weeks ago, when some 2,500 terrorists burst into Israel by land, sea, and air under a massive rocket barrage, killing around 1,400 people, the vast majority of them civilians. Terrorists also took at least 210 hostages of all ages into Gaza and are holding them captive.

The attacks on October 7 were particularly vicious: More than 20 towns and villages in southern Israel were ambushed with 1,400 people killed and 200 taken hostage. Israel suspects that members of Nukhba, a specialized Hamas commando unit, were responsible for the assault.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have already killed several Nukhba commanders. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has even issued a stark warning to the terrorist group: “Every member of Hamas is a dead man.”

The unit’s formation could be a strong measure aimed at not only bringing justice but also dismantling Hamas once and for all.

By focusing resources on hunting down those involved in the attacks, Israel is sending a strong message to Hamas and other terrorist organizations that might be considering attacking the Jewish nation. It could possibly act as a deterrent, signaling to the world that Israel is willing to go to great lengths to protect its citizens and mete out harsh punishment to those who threaten its security.

Some have cautioned that there could be certain risks associated with the initiative. H.A. Hellyer of the Royal United Services Institute said that taking out top Hamas leaders would “severely weaken but not crush” the terrorist group.

However, one can’t deny that killing key members of Hamas’ leadership would deal devastating damage to the organization, especially when combined with the impending ground assault the IDF plans to launch in the near future.

This initiative is reminiscent of Operation Wrath of God, a covert assassination campaign Israel carried out in response to the kidnapping and murder of 11 Israeli athletes by Palestinian extremists in 1972.

A secret Israeli committee chaired by Prime Minister Golda Meir and Defense Minister Moshe Dayan is said to have authorized the assassination of everyone directly or indirectly involved with Black September, the Fatah-affiliated group that had orchestrated the Munich killings. The Wrath of God hit squad—code-named Bayonet—was made up of members of Mossad, Israel’s foreign intelligence agency, and supported by special operations teams from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The group spent years tracking down and killing those suspected of planning or participating in the Munich massacre.

The establishment of the NILI unit represents the evolution of Israel’s response to the October 7 attacks. The IDF has shown that it is serious about dealing with the threat that Hamas poses to its citizens and national security. One thing is clear: The situation in the Middle East is about to get even more intense.
