What Happens If Michelle Obama Does Decide to Run for President?

If the rumors are true, the 2024 election might be experiencing yet another shakeup. As it becomes more apparent that former President Donald Trump will be the Republican Party’s presidential nominee, the chattering class is abuzz with speculation that former First Lady Michelle Obama might throw her hat into the ring as President Joe Biden struggles to mount a viable campaign for reelection.

Several commentators and politicos have suggested that Democrats have a plan to replace Biden with Obama in their bid to retain control of the White House. While the former first lady has not indicated a willingness to run for president, some believe it is only a matter of time before she announces her campaign.

Journalist and podcaster Megyn Kelly is one of several media figures who have speculated about a potential Obama candidacy. She discussed the matter during an interview with New York Post columnist Cindy Adams.

Here's what Adams says:

Reportedly, and I’m being told, “Obama has polled donors.”

His plan? Around May, Biden announces he’s not running (even mentally). The so-called plot is that come the August convention, Michelle gets nominated.

More:

Mrs. Obama’s team has already sent a survey to heavy-duty donors asking how they’d feel about her as the candidate.

The process has begun.

Kelly also mentioned Michelle Obama's comments about being terrified for 2024, because leaders were so important and the government does "everything" for us.

What’s going to happen in this next election? I am terrified about what could possibly happen. Because our leaders matter, who we select, who speaks for us, who holds that bully pulpit, it affects us in ways that sometimes I think people take for granted. You know, the fact that people think that government, ‘Ahhh, you know, does it really even do anything?’ And I’m like, ‘Oh my God. Does government do everything for us, and we cannot take this democracy for granted.’ And sometimes I worry that we do.”

As farfetched as it might seem, it is not impossible that Michelle Obama might decide to run for president. In today’s American politics, almost anything could happen. If this scenario were to materialize, it would have a remarkable impact on the political landscape. She could actually be one of the most formidable candidates Democrats could choose to run against Trump.

For starters, Michelle Obama has become more than a former First Lady; she is a cultural icon, for better or for worse. Her post-White House life has produced best-selling books and sold-out events across the country.

A poll conducted last summer revealed that she would be leading Biden by double digits if she had decided to run. Obama’s charisma and likeability would make her a powerful standard-bearer for the Democrats. Her candidacy would likely get Democratic voters far more excited about 2024 than Biden ever could.

Secondly, with internal divisions rocking the Democratic Party, Michelle Obama could become a unifying figure, one that can appeal to far-left progressives and moderates alike. The tremendous influence that she and her husband still wield over the left is considerable and would grant her significant levels of political capital that she could use to galvanize the Democratic base.

Combined with the fawning adoration of the activist media, Obama could use her position to make the case for why she should be president. The press would viciously attack any of her critics, just as they did when her husband was running. Of course, with Michelle, they would be even more aggressive, smearing anyone with a negative word to say about her as both racist and sexist.

As a foil to Trump, Obama could position herself as someone who can unite the country and constantly harp on the former president’s manner, which can be divisive. Moreover, she might just have what it takes to go toe-to-toe with Trump in the war of words that would surely follow after she announced.

Of course, this is just speculation at this point. Obama has repeatedly indicated that she is not planning to run for the White House. But as I stated earlier, anything could happen in this era of American politics.
