If you haven’t already seen by now, today is #GivingTuesday, “a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.”
Being a curmudgeonly type, I don’t like being told when to donate to charitable organizations – and since, contrary to popular belief, conservative media isn’t fueled by huge amounts of dark money, most of my contributions to non-profits are in the form of labor, I haven’t paid #Giving Tuesday much attention.
This year, though, I learned that Facebook and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are matching donations made through Facebook on #GivingTuesday, and thought, “Hmm, this could be a way to get some of Zuckerberg’s dough to groups he might not otherwise like very much.”
I’m sharing a couple of those here, and I asked other RedState writers to share their #GivingTuesday picks as well. (Note: Not all of the orgs are able to accept donations through Facebook, but don’t let that stop you from donating!)
Firearms Policy Foundation and The Calguns Foundation fight for 2A rights in California and on a national basis. Both of them have badass legal teams working on challenging California’s “Gunpocalypse” laws through the federal courts, and CGF has one of the only pro-2A WINS in the 9th Circuit (at a bench trial, even). They also do work on First Amendment and due process issues, especially as these affect gun owners.
Soroptimist International Simi Valley is a group that’s near and dear to my heart, as I am a charter member and the Director of Marketing. Our goal is to improve the lives of women and children through education. In just two years we’ve provided over $15,000 in educational grants to single moms who have overcome huge obstacles (domestic violence, substance abuse, PTSD, to name a few). We run programs in middle and high schools, helping girls with self-confidence, body issues, relationship issues, and career goals. We also partner with other local groups in efforts to combat human trafficking in Southern California and around the globe.
“The only non-local charity I give to is Priests for Life. They are tireless advocates for the unborn and work to train local advocates so their reach is incredible.”
Shepherd’s Ministries helps families with Down Syndrome children and runs a home for DS adults who have no one to care for them and provides them with a community, events, and even job opportunities. I spent several days volunteering for them while in high school, and it changed me for the better.
Phantom Rescue Former Special Ops members who go after children abducted into the sex slave markets.
Restoring Hope Center, Inc. I’ve done a lot of work with these guys. They supply food and clothing for families in countries far outside of this one.
Thrive STL: A pro-life organization that empowers people to make life-affirming and healthy decisions about sex, pregnancy, and relationships and runs a women’s health clinic.
Backstoppers – Support families of fallen first responders.
Kellie Jane’s Pick:
Gallant Few “Vets tell me that these folks actually do what they say they’re going to do with the money, which is to help those who’ve served transition to civilian life.”
4 Kids of South Florida “My pastor started this years ago – they take in kids who would otherwise go into state custody/who are taken out of abusive homes or situations where parents can’t care for them, and Christian families take them in and care for them until they ultimately adopt them or they can go back to their biological parents. They’ve done incredible work alleviating the foster care problem in FL and they’re tripling donations for #GivingTuesday.”
