This is probably wise on the part of the apparently recently-turned-blues-musician.

WASHINGTON — Senator Harry Reid, the tough tactician who has led Senate Democrats since 2005, will not seek re-election next year, bringing an end to a three-decade congressional career that culminated with his push of President Obama’s ambitious agenda against fierce Republican resistance.

Mr. Reid, 75, who suffered serious eye and facial injuries in a Jan. 1 exercise accident at his Las Vegas home, said he had been contemplating retiring from the Senate for months. He said his decision was not attributable either to the accident or to his demotion to minority leader after Democrats lost the majority in November’s midterm elections.

Seriously. Those sunglasses. You can catch Reid in a Vegas piano bar working for tips after his retirement.

Reid is, for better or worse, the one who will get credited with making Senate Republicans look like fools (though history should reflect [mc_name name=’Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’M000355′ ] should have equal share in that credit). The once-wily senator has, in the last two years, been getting ever more nonsensical in his rhetoric, including, but not limited to, waging a one-sided verbal war on the Koch Brothers.

The really interesting thing here is that Reid is a representative of the Democratic Party politicians as a whole right now: older, white, male, and if they aren’t rich when they get into office, they get rich through questionable means. What happens next determines the party’s success in the next couple of years. Do they seek younger representation, and maybe some more diversity? Or do they stick to the wealthy, white folks who suffer so much white guilt that they are completely fixated on diversity issues instead of good governance?

Who can tell, really? I mean, it doesn’t appear as though they are great at reading what elections mean, considering the party has made few, if any, changes in practice since they released their utterly useless 2014 autopsy anyway.

Farewell, [mc_name name=’Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’R000146′ ]. You’ll be missed*.
