The Democratic Party is suffering from a major identity crisis. This isn’t new information, of course, but it seems to keep getting worse.

Just yesterday, former Rep. Joe Sestak announced he was entering the Democratic primary, bringing the count to 24. That’s right, folks, two dozen Democrats are now vying for the chance to run against Donald Trump in 2020.

Now, I would be lying if I told you all 24 had a chance. In fact, only a small handful are really getting any media coverage at all. I don’t expect the race to be that complex when it comes down to it, but that’s not because there is someone who just stands out and is likely to win it.

Even if it’s a small handful – say six or seven of those candidates – who actually stand a chance, each of them are in a desperate race to out-progressive the next. In doing so, they are going to put themselves into a fairly dangerous position.

I have argued, and will continue to argue, that if the American public were looking for an alternative to Trump, it would be in the form of a centrist candidate. Those who exist in the Democratic Party are not trying to run for President. They are mostly the Nancy Pelosi’s and the other, older Democrats who don’t want to go off the deep end in response to Trump.

But the ones who are running are going crazy in trying to out-crazy the next candidate, and the result is a far-left primary that very few Americans who would need to be persuaded to join up would be willing to do so.

That’s what makes this primary so hilarious. The successful candidates in the primary are the ones going full-socialist in an effort to show themselves as totally opposite Trump in policy. In all actuality, the path to beating Trump is way easier if you were to target him from the center, not the left. However, the Sestaks of the Democratic Party aren’t going to do that.

They’ll continue to push further and further left, and Trump can just laugh and work his way toward a victory in 2020.
