Judge Roy Moore’s continued candidacy for the U.S. Senate, amidst sexual harassment/assault allegations, has exposed many things. We’ve been made well aware of his own extreme selfishness. On top of that, we’ve seen just how sick the GOP is with tribalism.

This is nothing new. The infection carried over from 2016 when the GOP faithful coalesced behind then-candidate Trump. Yes, there were plenty who supported him at the polls because of his political positions, however superficial. Still, others yearned to vote for him simply because he wasn’t Hillary Clinton.

I was not one of those people.

In the past few weeks, we’ve seen leaders, writers, and pundits on the Right announce that they support Roy Moore even if every one of the highly corroborated allegations is true. Leaders in the faith community have chimed in, too, ready to throw their all behind Moore because of those evil Democrats and that filthy Washington establishment.

Because to some, politics is all that matters. Principles need not apply.

A new Quinnipiac University poll released on Tuesday is another example of how rotten the GOP has become. The answers to this question are especially revealing:

If a political candidate has been accused of sexual harassment by multiple women, would you still consider voting for them if you agreed with them on the issues, or would you definitely not vote for them?

For Republicans, 43% would consider voting for said candidate while 41% would definitely not vote for them. In addition, 16% of respondents identifying as Republicans did not know/had no answer.

Conversely, respondents identifying as Democrats were more lopsided. Among them, 12% would consider voting for said candidate while 81% would definitely not vote for them. In addition, 6% did not know/had no answer.

Are you surprised at how we arrived at President Trump? Don’t be.

Other poll results were similarly disappointing, but none so much as this one. It is more than obvious that the majority of Republicans would gladly choose their own candidate, despite the stink of possible sexual predation, because that’s all that matters! Their mindset is set on binary. It’s US or THEM. Period.

And that is nothing but tribalism.

The 2016 election set the bar low for the GOP in terms of what they were willing to look past in order to win. I don’t see this new reality changing anytime soon.
