In this episode of “What Marjorie Taylor Greene Said,” as reported by Newsweek and other news outlets. the Georgia Republican congresswoman in a videotaped podcast suggested that the Fourth of July shootings — most notably the mass shooting in Highland Park, Illinois — were “designed” to get Republicans to support more stringent gun-control laws.
Lest we start breaking the furniture right off the bat, here’s MTG in her own words:
Now, here’s what I have to say. I mean. Two shootings on July fourth: One in a rich white neighborhood and the other at a fireworks display. It almost sounds like it’s designed to persuade Republicans to go along with more gun control. I mean, after all, we didn’t see that happen at all the pride parades in the month of June.
But as soon as we hit the MAGA month — as soon as we hit the month that we’re all celebrating, loving our country, we have shootings on July fourth. I mean, that’s … oh, you know, that would sound like a conspiracy theory, right?
Um, yes. That’s exactly what it sounds like.
Unless of course, MTG has even a shred of evidence to back her baseless “sounds like it’s designed” suggestion. Mirroring the conspiracy theory loons of the left is not an effective Republican strategy.

Given my disdain for conspiracy theories completely devoid of facts, I find MTG’s history of conspiracy theories to be unnecessary. Besides, integrity matters.
Not to pile on, but Greene in a 2018 video falsely suggested that the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon was a hoax, John F. Kennedy Jr.’s death in a 1999 plane crash was “just another one of those Clinton murders,” and Barack Obama was secretly a Muslim. Here’s the thing: you can believe any or all of MTG’s conspiracy theories, including that the mass school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 dead was “staged,” but where’s the beef? Where is the proof? To be fair, Greene did subsequently walk many of these comments back, but her seeming penchant for entertaining these sorts of theories is not helpful.
The bottom line:
We — conservatives — should be better than this. We are better. Most of us, anyway. And it is precisely the Democrat Party with a long history of trading in emotion, false promises, blatant lies, and exploitation — not the Republicans.
That said, Republicans employing baseless Adam Schiff-like tactics is not only harmful to the conservative cause; failing to call out such people also destroys the credibility of those who refuse to do so.
