Irony on Steroids: State Department Says 2023 Cambodian National Elections 'Neither Free Nor Fair'

Talk about a complete lack of awareness — self or otherwise.

It appears that Cambodia’s July 2023 national elections didn’t exactly live up to the high standards of Biden lackey Antony Blinken‘s State Department. Not even close, according to spokesman Matthew Miller, “The United States is troubled that the July 23 Cambodian national elections were neither free nor fair.”

Yeah, I know — way too easy, but I’m going to wait a bit before I put this thing on full blast.

First, a bit of background:

Cambodia’s ruling party said on Monday it had won the majority of parliamentary seats in a weekend election … The Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), which ran virtually unopposed, said it won 120 out of 125 seats, cementing Prime Minister Hun Sen’s grip on the country’s political landscape ahead of a possible transition of power to his son Hun Manet.

“We didn’t just win the election but we won it in a landslide,” said CPP spokesperson Sok Eysan. “We have no option but to continue to serve the people with happiness.”

The National Election Committee website on Monday showed it was still in the process of counting ballots, but did not comment on the results.

Hun Sen, 70, has ruled Cambodia for nearly four decades, with an increasingly heavy hand in recent years that has all but wiped out the opposition.

So clearly, the Cambodian elections were a sham, making the State Department‘s aforementioned comment correct. But that’s not the point of my article. The Federalist Editor-in-Chief Mollie Hemingway summed up the exact point of my article perfectly:

US says Cambodia’s elections were neither “free nor fair” because the political opposition was threatened and harassed prior to the election. Interesting in light of the 2020 BLM riots and the political prosecution of Republicans ahead of 2024.

Bingo. The State Department’s comments on the Cambodian sham elections were the best combination of over-the-top irony and clueless mind-blowing hypocrisy I’ve seen in a minute.

That State Department statement reads, in part (emphasis, mine):

The United States is troubled that the July 23 Cambodian national elections were neither free nor fair.

Ahead of the elections, Cambodian authorities engaged in a pattern of threats and harassment against the political opposition, media, and civil society that undermined the spirit of the country’s constitution and Cambodia’s international obligations. These actions denied the Cambodian people a voice and a choice in determining the future of their country.

In response, the United States has taken steps to impose visa restrictions on individuals who undermined democracy and implemented a pause of certain foreign assistance programs.

The United States looks forward to a continued partnership with the Cambodian people to support their aspirations for a more prosperous, democratic, and independent country where all voices are heard.

Um…

While I’m not among those who believe the 2020 presidential election was “rigged” and “stolen,” to believe Democrats don’t cheat in elections and that everything in 2020 was on the up-and-up would be a fool’s game, at best.

Always remember that the Democrat Party doesn’t want to make it easier to vote; Democrats want to make it easier to cheat. For that reason, and others, the Democrats now run a general election season while the Republicans still rely in large part on the traditional Election Day model.

The Bottom Line

If we (conservatives) are going beat the Democrats, we’re going to have to first beat them at their own game. Then, if the GOP wants to change the rules — which I believe should be changed — it will have the congressional power and power of the presidency to do so.

Let’s be honest. Howling at the moon about 2020 didn’t accomplish a thing, and neither will continuing to use the “rigged” and “stolen” argument in future elections. That’s just facts. Call it “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me,” if it helps, but let’s get after it like a boss in 2024 and get the job done.

After all, we can ill afford to screw it up.

Meanwhile, I don’t give a damn about Cambodian elections nearly as much as I very much give a damn about U.S. elections — and neither should Joe Biden’s State Department under the “leadership” of Joe Biden and mealy-mouthed Antony Blinken.
