Donald Trump broke 12 hours of post-Iowa silence on Twitter by claiming that “Because I was told I could not do well in Iowa, I spent very little there – a fraction of Cruz & Rubio. Came in a strong second. Great honor”.
Is this claim true, that he spent very little there? Let’s check.

It turns out no, it’s not true. His campaign spent $3.2MM in ads alone in Iowa, which doesn’t count any other spending on organization, videos, and events in the state. This ad money alone amounts to a full third of the $10MM Trump loaned his campaign, and an amount equal to half of his campaign’s spending in Q4 2015.
By no reasonable metric is this a “very little” amount of money. I rate Trump’s tweet Pants on Fire.
