The FCC voted to Restore Internet Freedom from the unprecedented Obama decision to apply 1930s regulation online. Democrats want to reverse that vote, and they got a weak Republican on board.
What Ajit Pai and the FCC voted to do was very simple. He tore away ridiculous regulations that didn’t actually help anyone, but were simply present to implement complete government control of the Internet. When then-Chairman Tom Wheeler passed his power grab, even he admitted it was a power grab, but promised “forbearance” of the complete package of regulation.
Do you think it’s safe to have government looming over the Internet at all times, with just their non-binding promise not to make things worse? Neither do I, and neither did Ajit Pai, which is why the Restoring Internet Freedom vote was so important. Democrats, however, want to restore uncertainty and regulation to the Internet.
So in the Senate, Democrats are forcing a vote to end Internet freedom by using the Congressional Review Act. It has virtually no chance of passing the House, but Democrats have their first Republican patsy to join them: Susan Collins.
If Susan Collins is going to start actively joining Democrat efforts, are Republicans going to tolerate her?
