Former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio was found guilty of criminal contempt of court on Monday. The charges were in regards to Arpaio’s defying a judge’s order to cease immigrant profiling patrols in 2011.

Arpaio admitted he violated the judge’s order but argued it was not intentional. U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton disagreed and determined the former sheriff had continued the targeted patrols in hopes it would help with his 2012 re-election bid.

Arpaio could face up to six months in jail. Sentencing will not take place until this fall, on Oct. 5.
