The Secretary of State of Alabama, John Merrill, spoke with CNN’s Jake Tapper following the initial announcement of Democrat Doug Jones as the winner on Tuesday’s special election for current Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ U.S. Senate seat.

In Republican Roy Moore’s non-concession speech, he and his spokesperson both said they would be seeking a recount and would be speaking with the Secretary of State of Alabama immediately.

Notably, Merrill told a CNN reporter, “I’m not very comfortable speaking to Judge Moore or anyone from the campaign tonight.”

Merrill also said he didn’t expect the outcome to change should there be a runoff.
